We closed our doors forever on February 27, 2016.
My daughter has celiac and without hesitation I say this is best Celiac friendly sandwich shop I've ever been to. She had the same range of wraps, crepes, and sandwiches that we did. We also loved that she could be treated to one of their GF muffins. Make sure you stop by- it's not the most convenient location but more than worth the trip!
This place is fantastic! We went for breakfast. I ate a GF Knuckle Sandwich Crèpe, which was one of the best crèpes I've ever had!

Had a specialty coffee and breakfast crepe and it was delicious. They cooked mine GF and it took slightly longer but that doesn't bother me, I'm just glad they can SAFELY accommodate me. Will definitely go back. They are super nice, too.
We were SO looking forward to eating here on our last trip to PSU based upon all the reviews here. We got there at 1:15 for lunch on a Friday. They didn't have any GF bread because their vendor stopped providing small businesses with their product. They are in the process of finding another source of GF bread. They offered to make the sandwich on a GF crepe. They opened a new bag of potato chips to prevent cross contamination. My issue was, they were out of pepperoni for the sandwiches we ordered. They offered to substitute bacon, which was fine. I waited a good 10 minutes AFTER the other 3 sandwiches came out for my regular BLT on toasted Italian bread. It was so toasted that it was like eating a sandwich on two croutons.
When we ordered crepes for dessert, my daughter wanted to try the Nutella and bacon crepe - they were out of bacon!! I guess we cleaned them out for the sandwiches. As for the desert crepes, the strawberry and Nutella crepe was a crepe with chopped strawberries on the inside and the smallest amount of Nutella drizzled across the top of the folded crepe. They would be SO much better with the Nutella INSIDE the crepe as well as artistically drizzled on top! BUT I've had crepes in France.
I would probably visit again to give it another shot.

Excellent menu! Excellent food! I found this gem while traveling from out of state and we could not have been happier with our lunch. They have a dedicated cooking surface for all of their GF cooking and almost the entire menu can be made GF. Wonderful crepes and friendly staff. The owner was especially sweet and helpful!

We were in town for a volleyball tournament looking for a place for my girls (who both have Celiac) to eat. Found this gem! The owner & staff were very friendly, accommodating and knowledgable! My oldest is very sensitive and had no issues. We all enjoyed a yummy meal! Would definitely recommend.
Yes
nice, small place that has a dedicated cooking space for gluten free crepes. They also sell some gluten free muffins, scones, etc.

It is wonderful to find a place that allows me to enjoy a safe breakfast! Dedicated crepe maker and surface area. Whenever we return to "Happy Valley" we will return for breakfast and lunch!!

Yummy! Dedicated gluten free surface for crepes. My son had a gf Nutella crepe and asked when we can come back.

This place is awesome! The GF crepe I had was so delicious. Very nice to have something yummy to eat! They offer GF bread for sandwiches that I will try next time. The staff was knowledgeable and friendly.

Fantastic, tiny place off the beaten path in State College. Parking was easy, the food was terrific. There were a surprising number of GF options, and the staff was well versed and helpful.
To the woman below who complains about the smell of coffee: their sign is a coffee cup. To be surprised, even offended, that you can smell coffee reflects much more negatively on the writer than on the coffee shop. And the coffee was quite good!

Callao is absolutely supportive of gluten free needs. I can count on the staff's cheerful & helpful consideration of my dietary needs, which include a variety of concerns in addition to gluten-free. Their GF baked goods are outstanding I'm not a coffee drinker, but the lovely smell of Callao coffee makes me wish I could drink it. If this site had a 6th star , I'd give it to Calkao😃😃

Was looking for a place to eat when in State College this weekend. Was wanting to try eview Callao Cafe but as soon as I stepped inside I knew I could not stay. It smelled so strong of coffee I started to get a headache!e Some coffee I am ok with but this I knew wasn't going to work. I grabbed a menu sand left without being able to explain why we were walking out. Sorry I wasnt able to stay so my review is based on my reaction to the strong smell.

Great find for anyone GF! We found it just by searching online and reading the reviews. My daughter has celiac and was able to order almost anything off the menu and the staff was friendly, knowledgeable and careful in preparing her order separately from the rest of ours. Well worth stopping by!

Tremendous! Gluten-free crepe on a gluten-free surface. Very GF-aware for such a small place. Nice staff. Glad I stopped by. Great mocha, too! Will come back next time I'm passing through.

Great food and attention to detail! Had a BLT on Udi's and chicken soup and a lovely chat with the owner. Only open until 4PM, good lunch spot.
Crepes are gf but they do not have a dedicated cook surface- so crepes are not safe- but well marked on GF menu.

This is the IDEAL cafe for someone who loves that coffee shop friendly feel, and who is GF... Their menus is HUGE for how small of a joint it is. They really care about their GF customers and the staff are all super friendly. I love going here in the afternoons for a sandwich or snack and a coffee. Highly recommended by me! They have a separate menu now, AND GF crepes!!!!!!!!!!!
For a small place, I was surprised at how gluten-free friendly they are. Apparently I came in on a day when they had just gotten GF wraps to add to their GF line, so that was nice.
All of their soups are gluten-free (the chicken rotini stops being gluten-free when they add the noodles, but they add those when they serve it, so I had "chicken soup.")
Many baked goods to choose from, and the owner said he was working on a dedicated GF crepe batter recipe that should be ready "soon."
Not a lot of seating, though. Small place, so there were some cross-contamination questions, but they readily used clean cutting boards and knives.
Only open for breakfast and lunch.

A clean, friendly, small café that specializes in coffee and crepes. The good news is that they have a lot of GF options like the other reviewer says. They don't have a menu that says "This is our gluten free stuff," but just about everything they have can be made gluten free. I like the Udi's. It makes a nice sandwich. Their soups are GF; they have chicken noodle, but they don't put the noodles in it until they serve it, so they have GF chicken soup and another vegetable one. The owner said as they add more soups this fall, he'll be trying to keep them as gluten free as possible. The bad news is that they don't have gluten-free crepes, but all of the crepes can be made on the Udi's. The dessert selection was nice.
Yes
GF soup every day. Udi's bread available for their sandwiches and by the loaf (big bread, not those postage-stamp sized loaves, so I can have a grown up sandwich) ; all the meats and cheeses are GF. Lots of locally-baked GF desserts. All the sandwiches can be salads. And great coffee. Love this place.
