The waitress was so considerate and careful not to cross contaminate my meal. This restaurant has so many gluten free options including gluten free pasta that was cooked to perfection as well as bread sticks, which was cleverly an Udi's pizza crust cut up and baked. I was very impressed and look forward to a return trip in the future!
Very friendly server but she wasn't very knowledgable about cross contamination. My husband has celiacs and he had a reaction.
This has been our best dining out gf experiences since being diagnosed. The restaurant has a dedicated menu, knowledgeable staff and many tasty options. We asked for the gf menu and waiter brought us GF bread sticks along with regular bread for rest of the table. It was nice to treated like a normal guest, even though she is limited.
They have a separate menu. The waiter even brought me gluten free bread and oil/garlic mix. I had shrimp scampi. It was delicious and I would eat there again.

The potato soup alone would be five stars. However, the service was horrible (slow, inconsistent and scattered) and the rest of the food was mediocre at best. I had the lemon rosemary chicken-- way, way too lemony, not enough rosemary, horrible flavor. My wife had spaghetti, which she normally loves, but barely touched. To be fair, the manager did kindly take my food off of the bill-- but While I do greatly appreciate that, I don't think we'll return.

While I usually base my reviews primarily on the food, this one gets one star for service. Some of our food came out 50 minutes after we ordered it. then 10 min later then 10 min later. Some food was cold, our drinks were never refilled and they blamed everything on the kitchen.
I went yesterday and asked about their gluten-free menu. The server told me they no longer have one, as they are making modifications. She also told me they no longer have gluten-free pizza crust. The only thing she knew was that they offer gluten-free penne.
I'm giving Carinos three stars because they are trying. but if you are celiac, beware. the gluten free pasta is not cooked and drained in dedicated gluten free pans. cross contamination is a deal killer. they do have a gluten free menu, so there are other choices. ordered Italian chili. it was good, filling, and came with free refills.
1st time visiting. I ordered GF soup and salad; child ordered GF penne with white sauce and chicken. Soup is clearly not made from scratch OR/AND from a can mixed with frozen veggies but manager says it is. Pasta was not a good dish at all. We ordered to house salads to go and left extremely unfulfilled and disappointed. Not sure if GF precautions taken in kitchen. I git a headache as soon as I ate some of the pasta.
My husband is highly sensitive to gluten. We told the server we needed our meals gluten free (I got mine gf as well so we could share). Both our meals were delicious and no problems for my husband. would definitely easy her again
Staff was AWESOME!!! Very knowledgeable. The manager took special care with my husband's meal as he as both a dairy and gluten allergy. He had the build your own pasta with chicken and gf penne with spicy marinara sauce. No reactions what so ever! We came from Nebraska and were a little nervous about traveling and allergies. Our first meal here in Waco and couldn't be more pleased.
I've been to Carino's many times at home so I didn't think I'd have an issue with this one while traveling through town. I asked the hostess for the gluten free menu and she said that they don't do gluten free at this location. We went someplace else.
Enjoyed my meal-lemon Rosemary chicken with gf pasta (i could have replaced gf pasta with roasted potatoes). Manager brought me gf pita chips with gf dipping oil since i couldn't have bread at table - a real treat! i was also able to have gf minestrone because they didn't add the pasta to it. No reaction! Manager was understanding of dietary restriction and cross contamination concerns I expressed. When asked, I was told they are a chain restaurant. I will return!
Went in ordered the create your own pasta with meatballs off the gf menu. Five minutes later waitress informed me meatballs are not gf. I ask why are they on the gf menu. They say it must be a mistake. After a long while my food shows up and there is normal pasta mixed with my gf pasta. I show the waitress she was shocked asked for my check. Manager came over and apologized and didn't charge me but i will never go back that is not safe stay away!!!
The online menu does not match the actual menu at the restaurant, so the limited GF options are even more limited once you get there. I had to repeat 3 times the word "gluten" to the hostess when asking for a GF menu (should have ran away right there).The waitress we had seemed very annoyed about our dietary restrictions and brought us a huge loaf of glutinous bread even though I explained that all of our party had gluten allergies. When I asked if the bread was GF, she had no idea what to say. Does she not know about gluten containing foods? Did she not care? Regardless- I wouldn't go to this place if I was you. Restaurants that advertise "GF" friendliness and don't bother to train their staff are worse, IMHO, than those who don't even bother to try to deal with the Celiac world. Just hoping that we don't get sick.
I was extremely impressed at the lengthy separate gluten free menu at Johnny Carino's. However, their food is just mediocre Italian; a step down from Olive Garden (in my opinion). While we received excellent customer service, every dish at our table was served lukewarm and the flavor was lacking. I'll definitely go back for their CHEAP bar menu ($5 options!), but know I'll know what to expect.
You'd never know you're eating GF at this place! They have some decent options for pasta, but their Alfredo isn't GF. Their house salad (minus croutons) is crave-worthy. They even had GF chocolate lava cake with vanilla ice cream last time I went. I never feel limited when I come here. Plenty of vegan & GF options, too!

I think you can get them several places around campus, but OU FCU is where I can usually get some.
My teenage daughter has celiac. We occasionally eat at Carino's and she thoroughly enjoys their pasta (they have GF corn pasta). I don't recall if the menu now indicates GF or if we had to ask. There are limited options, but what they offer is delicious and she has never gotten sick.
Waited several minutes to be seated. Bathrooms were dirty. The potato soup was delicious, and the minestrone was pretty good. Thank goodness for unlimited servings of soup because it took nearly 45 minutes for our food to be delivered. No issues with gluten (thank goodness!) but the food was just poor quality. Overcooked steak, cold and undercooked veggies. The spicy shrimp and chicken WAS spicy, but somehow managed to have zero flavor. The chicken Alfredo lacked creaminess and again was flavorless. The waitress was prompt but seemed unconcerned about the wait time or quality of the meal. I'm disappointed that so many reviews on this sure were positive, it's why we went in the first place. Lesson learned, we will not be back.
I would not recommend this place to anyone. The restaurant was dirty, the bathrooms were disgusting. There was quite a few options on the gluten free menu, which was nice. But the food was actually quite bad. No taste, steak was way over cooked, pasta was ok but the sauce was like water. We ate there yesterday and today my guts are on fire 🔥. This is obviously an old olive garden...some of the old decorations are still up. Stay away....Celiac or not....go someplace else.
I was happy to see they now have a gluten free menu with gluten free pasta and pizza dishes. I opted for the pizza because I was told they don't always change out the water when they do gluten free pasta so there could be some cross contamination with the regular pasta, not sure how this is ok. When the MANAGER brought out the food he just called it pizza so I asked if it was gluten free just to be safe. He said "uh, yeah." Unfortunately, I ate it and it was definitely not gluten free! It made me so sick! I won't be back since even the manager doesn't care enough to double check food safety.
The manager was amazing there. Through Facebook, I was able to ask what I should order and the Executive Chef helped me find items (usually customized) to get pas my gluten and soy allergies. They are also very good about it in the Lake Jackson location as well.
The service was pretty good and the chopped salad I ordered (which was a bit like an Italian cobb salad) was really delicious, my experience eating at Johnny Carino's as a person with gluten intolerance was disappointing. While most major Italian restaurants have an option for gluten-free pasta, this one does not. Unless you want a salad, you'll be out of luck as a gluten-free diner. Until they bring some more options in, I recommend opting for another restaurant.
Great experience! I hadn't been in a while and we decided to go back tonight. Noticed their GF menu was different (this is how long it's been since I've been). Anyways I ordered my meal and a side salad to go with since my husband would be enjoying the yummy bread they give right in front of me. To my surprise, the waiter brought out some GF bread for me to enjoy as well!! It wasn't all that great tasting but I was very excited that I was thought of and waiter didn't want me to be sitting there empty handed. We will be going back! My meal was really good by the way!! It was some kind of skillet spaghetti meal, started with a T but super yummy!
I was hopefull that this location would be knowledgeable about the gluten-free menu. Not only was the server annoyed by my questions, he literally stopped coming by the table. I had to ask repeatedly for management and the hostess for refills. This location is on Sunland Park drive, El Paso. Be very afraid to eat here. Cross contaminating food preparation and lack of knowledge, could affect your life!!
Do not eat here if you have celiacs. we sat right by the kitchen and I watched the chef the whole time. He never changed his gloves or tongues and he used his hands to grab pasta. when I addressed with staff manager he apologized and barely reprimanded the chef who laughed it off. there menu says the are gig trained but after what I saw that must be a lie. I am usually a easy going person but this was horrible. wait staff was nice.
