My husband and I ate here last night. Great atmosphere. Food was delicious. We had the tacos and the winter salad. Best dining experience we've had in a long time. Very conscious of celiac needs. We felt normal!
over priced. but safe.
This was a little gem on a side street away from the more tourist trap restaurants. As a gluten free (celiac) customer, I was thrilled to see many GF items on the menu. The food looks prepared from scratch. I got the pimiento appetizer and BBQ brisket tacos which were both delicious. I wish more restaurants would follow suit and realize if they prepare more of their own food, a lot of items are already gluten free. A little creativity can add a lot to the menu that can be GF, rather than ordering a salad without the croutons. It can add cost to the menu, but most GF diners are used to it and willing to pay for it.
Loved this place, many wonderful Gluten Free choices that were quite tasty. Stopped in for lunch & decided we'd go back for dinner. Definitely will make this a destination on my next trip to St Augustine.
I had the Shrimp N Grits. The shrimp was cooked but not seasoned with anything so it tasted very bland. On the side, were two grit cakes, not your typical grits. They were good, but again maybe there could have been a delicious sauce or something to tie the shrimp with the grit cakes together to add some flavor.
Great food in a 'safe' environment with many choices. We had the tacos (brisket) and shrimp 'n grits. The grits were very good, the tacos were great! We also had the arepas as a starter, excellent as well. I would highly recommend the Floridian.
many gf options listed on menu, knowledgeable server, love the new location!
They moved to 72 Spanish St. Had same issue finding the place as woman stated below. FOOD WAS EXCEPTIONAL!! We got fried chicken and garlic mashed, short ribs, winter vegetable medley, fried cheese for app, and haven't eaten the GF brownie yet! Everything is SO GOOD. Great service, server was really sweet. Also, the atmosphere is kindof cool. All around a great experience! I would say that 75% of their menu is gluten free. Owner and the head chef are gluten sensitive so they use a lot of gluten free products. :)
Food is Fantastic!! They were out of the tacos😞 so went for the spicy mahi melt. Also had pimiento cheese fritters and hummus dips. Everything was presented beautifully and the atmosphere is very cute. Did have a hard time finding it since they moved though; new address is 72 Spanish St. Just a short walk from old location.
We have three Celiacs in the family. The staff and food were amazing! Our waiter communicated with the culinary team and we ended up with an EXCELLENT meal. Thank you! We felt so normal.
Hands Down, the best tacos I've ever had! (BBQ brisket). I'd give more than 5 stars if I could. Gluten free items clearly marked on the menu. They have gf bread. Tacos are a must try though. They can be made with Tempeh is you are vegetarian. They have gf deserts too but I didn't try them.
I had the BBQ tacos and chocolate brownie with salted caramel for dessert! excellent! the tacos had fresh cut apple and was an ingenious combination!
Excellent mahimahi melt on GF bread. Service was great
******Do not go here if you have Celiacs****** I was fooled by the previous reviews and went for lunch. Besides salad they had maybe 5 things on their menu that were GF. However half of those items had gluten on them. There is no dedicated fryer. The bread is UDIs. I had to ask the waitress, who was very frustrated with my gluten allergy, if they could pan fry my Fried Green Tomato sandwich. She said she had to check and did not come back for 30 minutes with the food.I got glutened...not really surprising though after the way we were treated. Don't believe the good reviews below if you have a severe allergy, it's not worth getting sick there.
Nice selection of menu items with lots of options. Soup of the day is advertised to be gluten free and sounded good - carrot, tomato, lemongrass bisque. I was not that hungry so passed on it. My child had a gf grilled cheese with apples (could have had carrots). I had a chipwich sandwich with mahi mahi, arugula, basil, special mayo, potato chips, and tomatoes. Yum. Hubby had a really unique salad with a fried green tomato and fish. Service was a little slow and the wait was 40 min but hey - it was New Year's Day. We sat on the patio - great atmosphere and during our wait we walked around the neighborhood where there were great shops and lots of people watching.
It's a $1.00 more for gluten free bread! The desert (salted Carmel brownie) amazing!
What a find! Cute little place featuring Southern delights using local ingredients. I had an amazing GF fried green tomato sandwich with cilantro mayo and a delicious tangy slaw. Server was super helpful and confirmed everything with kitchen before placing my order - only mods needed were pan frying the tomatoes to avoid shared fryer, and GF bread of course. Will be returning every time we visit St. Augustine!
Absolutely amazing for GF. They care! They are very aware of Celiac and gluten intolerance! Get the GF Fried Green Tomatoes! Wow! Our new favorite place when coming to St. Augustine! Not to mention they saved the day that Yard Bird Cafe almost ruined!
Food was good. Atmosphere was pleasant. Staff understood my GF issues.
Great food here that is some of the best tasting gf food in the city. Friendly and helpful staff. Amazing desserts.
Best veggie burger and amazing pecan bars!
Definitely won't ever eat here again. Paid $27 and waited 45 minutes for a chicken sandwich on gf free bread that came out with hard inedible bread, and chicken piled on top of said bread. Not a "sandwich" at all. Not only that but the chicken was awful... spongy and rubbery? I don't even know how to describe it. The non-gf sandwich my partner ordered came out just as bad, loaded with mayo. We honestly couldn't even eat it. $30 in the trash. You don't wanna waste your time.
This was surprisingly delicious. I had the Shrimp and grits. But, it was unlike any I've had before. The shrimp was dressed in a creamy remolaude sauce over Polenta cakes with grilled onions, fresh corn, red pepper and feta cheese drizzled over it. I wanted to lick my plate clean!
Gluten Free Quiche. Gluten Free Muffins, Gluten free biscuits
Love, love, love! This is our new local favorite... fresh delicious food, clearly labeled GF items and fun little outdoor seating.
FANTASTIC!! Very delicious! Our waitress is gluten free which is great! The Elkin salad was amazing! It even had a GF fried green tomato with it. Yum! Oh and the GF chocolate coconut pecan bar with home whipped cream was heavenly! The place is small but very cute. Super busy when we were there at 5:30. No one seemed to mind waiting the 45-60 min wait & we know why, so worth the wait!
i love everything about Floridian was my previous review but has now changed as of May 26,2013!!! Please read the following: I'm hesitant about having to write this new review... but ate here last evening and was very disappointed with my entire experience! I found out that after my many dining experiences I've been mislead 3 -4 times on the ingredients of the black bean sweet potato veggie burger. As i was ordering it again i was told it has soy in it? I have Celiac disease and a severe G&D allergy. I was then told to try the Floridian Sunshine Salad. Really bad choice, although the 5 shrimp were flavorful, there were only 5? One sliced strawberry and a few pieces of walnuts in a HUGE entire bunch of leaf lettuce!? I've never seen anything like it..... for $14 ? Really? For lettuce because that was the main ridiculous part of the salad. Oh, forgot to mention that my co-worker came with me and ordered 1/2 oysters which took them 15 + min. to let us know they were out of. We ended up waiting for silverware 5+ min. after the fact our meals had finally been served. Getting our bill was more than an effort (we didn't complain about the meal, thinking i would be asked why i didn't eat my gigantic bowl of lettuce, nothing mentioned by waitress? Wow!). I have also sent many clients here.... I'm now worried their experience was not the best and they're just afraid to tell me. The staff can never seem to remember who I am even though I've been there 6-7 times. Odd, I think... just a simple hi Elle good to see you again, how have you been.... nothing more would at least show they have taken the time to recognize that I'm a regular patdon and are aware of my continued business? I think, don't you? Well, I'm sorry to say, I'ts more than VERY doubtful I'll ever be back. I won't be sending my clients.... and wonder if this review will even matter to them or at least enough to make a difference or have the desire to change!!! With mixed emotions and severe disappointment. Elle. (May 26, 2013)
Amazing place! The head chef is gluten-sensitive, so she and all the staff are very educated about safety issues for celiacs. We were very impressed with this place!!! The food was absolutely delicious too!!! They even have awesome GF bread, waffles, and desserts! The owners and staff were so friendly and it's just a great environment!
Just a fantastic gluten free dining experience! We visited the area last week and we had amazing oysters mignonette, a shrimp and clam dish that included zu-noodles, and GF bread, pork chops with an awesome mix of black beans and rice w/brussel sprouts, black-eyed peas, and jalapenos and THEN, we had the nerve to order a strawberry cupcake and a chocolate coconut pecan bar, too!! Totally delicious---- and the people here know how to create safe, yummy GF meals. The service was top-notch, too.
AH-MAZING!! I had the green fried tomatoes for an appetizer, 'N waffles with pork for dinner and the pecan coconut thing for desert. The best meal out I have ever had!!!
Organic, fresh made, local produce, and many gluten free options including fried green tomatoes!! Creative menu and everything I've tried is delicious!
