It was yummy but I got sick here. It is not celiac friendly. I got sick from cross contamination. They use the same surfaces to cook food.

Fast, cheap, healthy. They will clean off a section of grill while you watch before cooking your food. I just give them a heads up that I have an "allergy bowl" before I start loading up, and they usually have the grill cleaned off before I get there. They'll designate one cook to handle your food, building a wall for you food using clean spatulas and using different utensils. I've been going for years, and *one* time they accidentally used the wrong spatula on my food while I wasn't looking. (They were *very* busy.) They immediately scraped off the grill and asked me to bring a new bowl up and skip the line. I've also been told that if I was uncomfortable with cross-contamination from menu items coming from a buffet, I can ask to have fresh ingredients brought from the back. They do a good job of arranging GF options on the other end from common allergens.
I went into HuHot today and the service was 5 star! I told our server that I had a gluten allergy, that I could not eat anything with wheat. He handed me a list of all the items they have at the food bar showing all the allergens and what was gluten free. Apparently all there sauces are gluten free which is great! He also went to the back to get me some special bowls that are separate from all the other bowls. He informed the kitchen staff and they cleaned the entire grill top for me and used cleaned spatulas for just my food. It was like I had my own personal cook/kitchen. They were very accommodating and very friendly! I was recently diagnosed with celiac. This place is on my restaurant food list! Good place if you're a celiac!
The good, the staff was knowledgeable about allergies and cross contamination. Brought menu with allergens. They have gluten free soy sauce, and can bring rice. They clean the area pretty thoroughly before cooking food. Use different clean utensils. Food was decent. The bad, the rice noodles are right next to the wheat noodles. I saw some wheat noodles end up in the rice noodles. The sauces are all right next to each other, so there is a high chance of contamination. Even though they clean the grill , they are cooking next to other foods that are splattering.
I am shocked that anyone finds this place safe to eat when they are gluten free! We went in so hopeful and our hopes were raised even further when they mentioned the care they go to in making sure it was gf. The special bowls, the dividers, scrubbing down the grill etc. But then the server mentioned no cross contamination of shell fish. That was the first red flag. Shell fish are not a worry for people who are gluten free. Perhaps he just mentioned it because of shell fish allergies not meaning to imply that it had anything to do with gf. They were careful to bring us a soy sauce that was gf, but then told us it was safe to eat their sauces; most contain regular soy sauce. What the server and manager told us are different than what it says on their allergy guide that can be found on line. They said their potstickers were gf; they clearly have wheat! Their allergy guide claims that all wheat on their menu has been processed to meet FDA guidelines. WHAT?! Anyone, who knows anything about gluten and gluten free knows that is IMPOSSIBLE! Their menu is laden with gluten and is NOT safe for people with celiac and gluten intolerance. When we talked to the server and manager about this they just shrugged and said that's how they were trained and no one has ever gotten sick there. There are no FDA guidelines for restaurants; only processed foods marked gf. We chose not to eat here; we want our daughter to have a good first week at college and not be dealing with being glutened. I'm only giving one star because it has to have at least one!
the restaurant does its darnedest to accommodate celiac patients. you do have to tell your server that you have celiac! also the fish is next to the nongluten free noodles... you can ask the line attendant for safe fish or any product. all the sauces are safe. you can also watch the cook scrub the cook surface to bare metal, set up barriers and use new spatulas just for you. I caught 1 cook messing up, and he apologized and we started over. I eat they at least 3 times a month!
I am a very sensitive celiac and have not had a problem here anybof the 5+ times we have eaten here. Once you make waitress aware of gluten . you will receive a yellow bowl to alert staff of allergy. Note: they have one tepan grill surface, but they do clean it and partiton it off when they cook gf food.
HuHot has quite a few gluten free options. My waiter offered to make my lunch in the back and pull all of the toppings from the original container to ensure there was no cross-contamination. All meats except for crab are gluten free and all sauces are gluten free. HuHot is an all you can eat Mongolian buffet. I have Celiac Disease and loved HuHot.
When I notified the cooks that I'm gluten free, they cleaned the grill with a pumice, kept my food separate and had dedicated utensils just for my order. I really appreciated the steps they took to avoid cross-contamination. They don't have Tamari sauce, just regular soy sauce, so next time I'll bring my own.
Great place! I watched them clean the cooking surface for me and they kept separate tongs to use as well. It was nice to see my food being cooked.
If you let them know you have an allergy they take extra care to clean the grill and keep separate from others. All the sauces are GF here. I have to say the staff were the most polite of any HuHot I've been to! Not that others have been bad, just everyone here was polite and attentive! 😊
I agree with the other review. It's phenomenal! Stay away from the crab and meatballs and noodles. Manager will bring out the rice noodles that are gluten free. Otherwise, all is gluten free including sauces. They clean the grill extra and use specific spatulas while cooking and serving. I really appreciate this place and their attentiveness!
Nice Hu Hot location, friendly staff, good food and I did not get sick (I'm a celiac). A couple bins of veggies were placed right by the wheat noodles, but the attendant kindly got me some from the back. Thank you Hu Hot for your GF options and friendly practices!
Love HuHot! This is one of the few places I feel confident eating at. All of the sauces are GF and they happily grab fresh rice noodles from the kitchen when asked. They make sure the grill is clean and use spatulas to protect your food from splatter. The more sauce you add the better it is. I always grab two bowls the first time and usually only go through once, but the cooks are always great about making sure the grill is safe for people with allergies.
Food is great, and the experience is neat too. The men on the grill clean, wipe down, and use clean utensils for allergies. So they are really trying! HOWEVER, the setup of the bar, where you choose the uncooked food and sauces, has the GF foods and the non-GF foods right next to each other... meaning easy cross-contamination. They are trying, so maybe a simple letter to them asking to rearrange the foods would help:)
They were very good when I went a couple of days ago. They clean the grill on request of allergy. I'm very sensitive so I need absolutely no cross contamination and they were very accommodating. They grab food directly from the fresh containers to ensure no cc. I didn't get sick!! :) Definitely going back since I'm getting limited on where I can go and am happy they are doing such a great job!
I called ahead to ask about cross contamination issues. They did everything they said they would...cleaned the grill thoroughly, barricaded my food, retrieved fresh rice noodles from the back rather than the buffet line. Food was good and I felt fine after. I have celiac.
They've recently redone all their sauces to be gluten free so the only things you need to watch for on the buffet line are the noodles and some of the meats. They did a great job scouring the grill when we told them we had a gluten allergy, marked the spots, scrubbed with extra care, even divided off our section with giant metal bars to prevent any splashing. Ordering from the menu would be trickier but the bar itself was great. You can skip the noodles entirely and just use the rice they bring to the table to avoid any noodle contamination. Great job and really appreciated all the effort they put in!
my understanding is the owners wife has celiac s, and this is a gluten aware place. ask the staff. they will provide you nutritional guide and it's easy to not choose the few and obvious gluten containing ingredients. tell the cook you are gluten free, they will clean the grill and give your food space. they have a gluten free sit sauce you can use. they are helpful. cannot guarantee 100% no cross contamination, like all places.
Menu and separate allergen list. Confusing to cross reference. Then. you have to carry the big allergen list with you as you select your ingredients. Those should be labeled.Then you tell the cooks you need your order Gluten Free. They scrape and scrub a section of the grill, and then partition it off and cook your ingredients. Not good enough for celiacs, they should have a separate grill or a section they can put on top that is dedicated to gluten free only.Wait staff friendly and curteous, and appear to be trained by corporate, but their procedures are not adequate for celiacs or the very sensitive. I will know in less than an hour, but until they improve their procedures, they are not quite there yet.
After going here several times, I feel that I have it down. The first time I went there, I got sick- very sick. The rice noodles are right next to the regular noodles and cross contamination is VERY high. After speaking to a manager, he was kind enough to tell me that they have no problem getting noodles from the back at request. Now, I ask my server to get my noodles from the back and have not had issues. Another poster here said that all the sauces are GF which is not true. They only have several that are gluten free, so be sure to get the allergen paper from your waiter so you know ahead of time what you can eat. Now that I have sorted that all out, I do not get sick. The chance for contamination is high, but cutting those major things out has helped me avoid the stomach ache.
