I have been a customer at John’s Tex Mex for 5+ years and have been working there since April 2023. We do not have a dedicated GF menu or have menu items marked GF, but we have a dedicated gluten free fryer and everything on the menu is (or can be made) gluten free besides items that require a 12 inch tortilla (meaning everything except a burrito, chimichanga, quesadilla, and the taco salad.) All items requiring the 6 inch tortillas either already come on corn tortillas or can easily be switched from a flour tortilla to a corn one. Inclusivity is important to John so our beans are vegan and our vegan protein options (tofu and unbeef) are also gluten free!
I usually order the mex plate (our version of loaded nachos), a burrito bowl or tostadas.

The server I spoke to said that everything they have is GF aside from the flour tortillas, and they have a dedicated fryer for their chips. He seemed very knowledgeable and helpful! Their food does seem to lack flavor though, not my favorite spot to be honest.

Delicious! They take cross-contamination very seriously here! This is quite possibly the safest I've ever felt eating at a place that wasn't completely GF. I was also able to get a vegan meal here which was great! The menu isn't marked but the waiter knew all about celiac and told me which ingredients would be safe (almost all of them), and about their practices to prevent cross-contamination

Really enjoy all my visits here. In the summer sitting outside, fun environment inside for winter. Chips are safe which is nice! Love the nachos, tacos, taco salad and tostadas. Gf ciders. They are always very knowledgeable. About what is safe gluten-free. Never had symptoms, and I am sensitive. Thank you!

This was a cute restaurant in a more artsy area of town. Outside seating was passable. Metal chairs/metal table- not the most comfortable but we were just stopping by for lunch so it was fine. Chips were tasty, salsa and Guac were ok. They readily accommodated my sons request for GF corn tortillas but struggled when he asked for only certain fillings (steak, cheese, guac only) Vs ordering one the standard options from the menu. The service was fine but overall prob not compelling enough to warrant a return visit.

Delicious quesadillas. Server assured me they are called on dedicated GF space. Also had chips and salsa. Salsa was homemade and excellent. I will go back when I visit Rochester

The waitress told us the chips were fried in a dedicated fryer. The menu has a blurb stating that many offerings can be made GF. However, I had a reaction by the end of my meal. I am not sure what it was, but I’m nervous to return. The rest of my family loved the food.
Great every time! Small shop with a very attentive staff and great prices!

I'm a reactive celiac. I have eaten here many times and have never had a problem. The people are super nice and friendly and they are very attentive to the fact it needs to be gluten free. Highly recommend them.

I'm surprised by the poor reviews. As a celiac I think they do a good job. I avoid the chips but I always get their burrito bowls. They are super fast and convenient for lunch during the week. I don't think they're the best Tex mex around but it's a great option to have.

Nice people but I didn't really feel safe to eat.

The one star is only because of information gained in phone call--food is great if you don't have to worry about cross contamination. Just called to order dinner for our family. Our 8 year old son gets very sick about 30 minutes after eating gluten, so we are very careful. Was told by the lady taking out order that the chips are prepared in a shared fryer, so in my opinion, this is NOT celiac friendly. Too bad, because it is good food.

Cheap good gluten-free food :) Go here for a unique experience in a chill environment.
Wide choice of GF items, very tasty, and inexpensive- that's a good combination. I shared the Mexican plate with someone because of the large portion- very good. My other companion has the burrito bowl with soft corn tortillas on the side to assemble her own. All really good.
Updated: this was so good we came back for lunch the next day and it was just as good. We all got the burrito bowl with corn tortillas. The house hot sauces that are served as condiments are really good.

I've asked about a hundred times (just to be sure), and they always say that basically everything that seems like it would be gluten free IS gluten free.
Just ask for corn tortillas instead of the standard wheat tortillas. The tacos are great. Both the tofu and un-beef are GF. The chips and salsa/guacamole are fantastic.
The staff is very knowledgeable. I love it.

John's Tex-Mex is awesome! Not only is their food cheap and delicious, but they also have dairy free and tofu options. (And if you can't have cheese and sour cream on your food then they'll put guacamole free of charge). Sunday's they also have brunch with specials that change every month.
