Manager was very accommodating & helpful but staff did not seem as aware of procedure. I was getting a plain potato to go - box had unknown grease / oil on it (probably a diff food handler along the way). They made me a 2nd one and all is well.
They aren't really knowledgeable about what is gluten free. there is cross contamination going on in the kitchen area. I ordered a sandwich on GF bread with GF ingredients and still got sick. if you have celiac disease then this isn't the place for you.
Great gluten free options- soup, salads and spuds! Friendly staff!!!
I've always loved their sandwiches but now that they have gluten free bread I'm loving them even more!
Though some McAlisters do have a gluten free menu they do not. I ordered a baked potato to be on he safe side. It was good but I wouldn't eat much here because you can't be certain.
There is one close to work so this is where I tend to go out if I have to go out for lunch and I did not pack. As long as you stick with the salads it is OK. I had no problems for 6 months and I went about once each month and then last week I got sick after adding the vegetarian chili to my salad... It is supposed to be GF based on their online GF menu. So either it was cooked in a pot that was not cleaned of all gluten or some other type of cross-contamination happened as I stuck to the salad I usually get. Next time I go I will stick to the salads as staff is not well trained on what is on their GF or not.
THEY NOW SERVE GLUTEN FREE BREAD!!!!!
love love love McAlister's gf menu. I try to get a different sandwich every time I go. my favs are the grilled sandwhiches. We eat there once a week. I will say while on vacation we stopped at a McAl out of state no gf menu no gf bread. disappointed. thankfully we live 1 mile away from one that has gf knowledge. Sorry to hear that anyone has had a bad experience there.
My first outing for gf bread request. Happy.
who are you people writing positive reviews for this place? i went into mcallisters 2 weeks back looking for a gluten free lunch and the cashier is unsure whether or not the salads are GF. when she asks her manager, he tells me yes, as they can pick the crutons off in the back. NOPE! NOT GLUTEN-FREE!
One of our favorite places for a simple meal. We particularly like the baked potatoes. The salads are huge and easily made gluten-free. No gluten-free sandwich options, but my non Celiac family has difficulty deciding because there are so many good choices.
They do have a gluten free menu...sort of. It is a printed list of foods that are gluten free. They need to update their list, but at least they have one.
I love the angus baked potato! Yummy. I have eaten it at this location twice with no problems. Recommend.
I've eaten at other McAllister's and they had gluten-free options. I ordered gluten-free sandwich at this one, and they brought me a sandwich, but it looked like a regular sandwich, so I asked if it was gluten-free and they said yes. I didn't trust it so I asked again and they said it was not after checking with the kitchen. They said this McAllister's does not offer gluten-free.
I love this place. They have gluten free bread that is also dairy free, so I am able to get a good sandwich still. Their staff is also bet friendly and helpful when it comes to checking the ingredients and letting you know what's safe.
No one at this restaurant had a clue about being gf or a menu in fact I was told that there was not a gf menu. The manager had the cashier tell me that there wasn't a menu but that the salads and dressing were gf. I was apprehensive but we were very hungry so I ordered a salad with a vinaigrette type dressing. What a mistake! About an hour later I got sick!! This restaurant should make claims they can't keep!! They should be taken off the site.
No GF bread at this location but they have GF soups and salads. All their salad dressings are gluten free too. I highly recommend the chicken chili!
Is there less than one star :-((((awful experience
The listing is misleading. I requested a gluten free menu and was handed a folder with a list of allergens. There are no procedures to avoid cross-contamination. Very few items do not contain gluten. I had a stuffed potato, some of which appear to be gluten-free. It tasted good and I had no reaction to it so I'm giving 3 stars.
I came here because it was on all the lists as having gluten free options. The manager handed me a xeroxed gf menu and then said we really don't have anything you can eat here unless you want to try a potato. We left since she wasn't really interested in our gf business.
Well.. When I asked for their gluten free menu they gave me the lunch menu.. the regular lunch menu. I asked the manager who said they didn't have one but thought the potatoes where gluten free. I asked if I could see the ingredients for their salad dressings and he said he couldn't get that for me. So, unless you're in the mood for a baked potato, I wouldn't bother.
They don't really have a GF menu, but a notebook with information and what menu items can be modified to be gluten free. They do carry a gluten free bread, Udis, and you can ask for it on any of their sandwiches. We talked to them about avoiding cross-contamination, but despite all that, my husband, who has celiac, was hurting and sick all night and into the next day, so we know that his food was contaminated. We will not be going back, that's for sure!
Great selection of Gluten Free Food!
The management bought a loaf of gluten free bread for me after we talked about gluten sensitivities. The sandwich they made was great! I was so impressed with their willingness to serve my family gluten free. Edited to add that I had a very bad cross contamination exposure the last time I went in. Management seems very interested in helping gluten free customers but the staff really need to be trained to handle food correctly.
McAlister's offers a huge menu and not only are so many options gluten-free (giant spuds, salads, all of the dressings), they carry Rudis gluten-free bread. Any of the sandwiches are available on it. I asked about cross contamination and was told that they change gloves and have a special cutting board to use for these orders. The bread is not sent through the toaster, rather grilled on the panini press to avoid the crumbs in the toaster.
We had lunch here and had the loaded potatoes. Excellent!! They were attentive to being allergic to gluten, were professional and courteous. Would highly recommend!
I went because of reviews on here from others-- thanks! The girl behind the counter was familiar with the term gluten-free. She brought out their 'allergy book'. They had prepared notes on which menu item was gluten-free. I took a chance and got the 'Savannah salad'. It was delicious. The restaurant is pleasant.
They DO NOT offer gluten-free breads at the Kingsport, TN location, AND the rice crispy treats on their gluten-free menu have barley in them. I had a allergic reaction to the Sherry shallot dressing on their Savannah Chopped salad which also appears on their gGF menu. Beware... Update, ordered the Spud Ole, and it was served to me w/ a ROTTEN potato. Just stay away. I tried again on 8/18...croutons despite a warning of gluten allergy & request for no croutons. 3 strikes & you're out. They clearly don't care.
AMAZING. And kids meals were all only $3.99 and not charged extra for gluten free! Then they gave us free desserts for being first time customers!
They don't have a Gluten-free menu.
I was told by the employee at the register they had no gluten free bread but are advertising they do. We ate a salad asked if dressing was gluten free he said he didn't know. All three of us ended up sick. For people with celiac disease this is not the place to go.
Big fat zero rating, but it made me give one star. I emailed corporate and asked if my St. Charles, MO location had GF bread. Guy said no but was sure I'd like any of their other choices. Um, no, I'd like a sandwich with bread I can eat. Why does it have to be so difficult all the time?! I don't think I'll go.
Ate at a MO location. Staff were helpful and attentive. GF menu posted prominently at counter. They have gluten free meats (including bacon!), sides and condiments. Delicious - ate there 3 times in a week and enjoyed 3 different meals - BLT, Horseradish-Cheddar Roast Beef With caramelized onions, stuffed baked potato and coleslaw. I'm making myself hungry. Go there today!
They do not actually have a gluten free menu. What they have is an allergy listing, which lists all their menu items and which common allergens are in each. There was one salad that was gluten free, baked potatoes, and one or two other sides. Very limited options. No GF bread for sandwiches. I ended up going somewhere else to eat.
We ate at McAlister's for lunch. My 2 yr old daughter has celiac disease. We shared the loaded nachos. They were delicious and a large portion. The boy who rang us up was very nice. I had read up on what was gf on their menu but he double-checked to make sure. I also requested a glove change and he put it in the computer and then went back to the kitchen area to make sure my meal would be prepared properly. We will definitely choose McAlister's again. There art a lot of gf options with salads, loaded potatoes, and nachos.
We stopped here on our way to Luray Caverns and I was very pleased with the options that I had. The girls at the counter were willing to let me see their allergy information (specifically gluten free) and I saw that I had a good number of options. I ended up getting the Chicken Caesar wrap but made as a sandwich and the gluten free bread was delicious. It was reasonably priced as well. Would definitely recommend if you're taking a road trip! Not sure about cross contamination in the kitchen, but I had no symptoms afterwards!
We stopped here on our way home from Virginia Beach. The staff is not very knowledgeable about gluten free eating (other than that they, in fact, have a GF menu). They were very accommodating with my requests. The manager oversaw our order and caught a mistake and had them toss it and prepare it again. The main options are baked potato, salad, and lunch meat (no bread). My thoughts - It's OK to eat here, just be very verbal about your requests and ask lots of questions.
Staff members were very attentive and offered to change their gloves before I even asked. They have plenty of Gf options at reasonable prices.
this location was has incompetent employees! paid $6 for a potatoe that never made it to my bag...the italian chopped salad was old. the meat was stinky and the tomotoes looked like they have been there for a awhile! the front of the house was too busy playing with the back of the house to even pay attention to customers.
I work in Monroe so my GF options are limited when I don't bring lunch but Mcalisters has always been a safe bet for me. I don't get anything that might have cc but I just get a taco salad with veggie chili and never have had a reaction
As with all McAlister's locations, I feel like I have to tell them the spiel - clean gloves, keep my plate separate from family's, etc. they do a great job with it - just wish that once I told them I have a severe gluten issue, they would know exactly what to do.
Can't go wrong with their spuds. I do feel, though, at their various locations that once I mention my celiac disease I have to remind them to use clean gloves, serve my food separately, etc. They have always done as I've asked - Just be sure to tell them what you need.
We asked for a gluten free menu and the lady behind the counter said she didn't think they had one and she said she didn't think they had anything gluten free except for the potato salad, maybe. We got a Taco Salad already knowing it was gluten free.
Delicious. I am very sensitive to gluten contamination and have never gotten sick here. I always order the Savannah Chopped Salad and the Spud Ole.
I love this place because you can get any sandwich gluten free, with a side and they have amazing sweet tea! Very accommodating about gluten free. Always answers my questions and if they don't know they find out always willing to change gloves. I have never gotten sick while eating here
The people at this location are VERY understanding AND knowledgable on gluten intolerance. Great selection and willing to go the extra step to make sure you don't get sick from their food. They even have a gluten-free menu typed up and on display even though this is not required by the chain. I love this location!
I was able to get a Horseradish Roastbeef Cheddar sandwich because they now offer Udi's bread. It is only .69 more and so worth it. It was so nice to order what I really wanted! The gluten free options are prominently displayed as you walk in the door as well. I am not a good judge on cross-contamination as so far I am not that sensitive, but it was a very good experience for me.
I was shocked and pleasantly surprised to find out that they can serve all of their sandwiches on gluten free bread. The bread was delicious and the server was great about making sure that everything on the sandwich I wanted was gluten free.
They have excellent sandwiches, much better than Earl of Sandwich and the best sweet tea I have ever had. They also have an extensive gf menu. I was surprised by the choices of sandwiches I could actually eat. And the bread was delicious, it didn't taste like typical gf bread. And I didn't get sick at all!
very good. my son did not want the gf bread so they only charged me for the meat instead of a sandwich. very friendly.
The food here is good. My only gripe might be more with this app and where they get their info. There is no "Gluten Free" menu. The menu doesn't even tell you if an item has gluten. When I asked if they had a GF menu they handed me a laminated copy of the allergies. The only menu items on here were sandwiches which all clearly have gluten.
Salad and soup options but no gluten free bread (no gf sandwiches). I had the Italian salad which was fresh a d good
we went to this restaurant because it came up on the list with a gluten free menu, but they didn't know about a menu or what gluten free was. The girl was very nice, but not aware of the gluten allergy. I've eaten at another McAlister's, and it was great. Jason's deli is down the street and they were knowledgeable and had gluten free bread.
This restaurant does NOT have a gluten free menu. It does NOT have gluten free items.
We eat here several times a month and have never had any problems. Food is great and staff is SUPER friendly!
Wonderful tasty potatoes. Great tasting food all the way around. gluten free food excellent will definitely return.
Don't believe any claims that this place caters to GF needs. When I asked for the gluten-free menu they had to dig it out from beneath the cash register and there was all kind of stains and junk on it because it'd been buried there for so long. Then when I ordered something from the menu I discovered that they did not have gluten-free bread so if I got any of the deli sandwiches, which is what they specialize in, I had to get them meat - only. If they are hoping to compete with Jason's deli they have miles to go to be close to the level of service and gluten-free selection that Jason's provides. I will not be returning to this restaurant again.
The app and deli advertise a gluten-free menu but that is not what they have. It's just an allergen list. Almost all their foods have wheat listed as an ingredient. The staff is not educated at all on food allergies either. The only items i noticed on their were chilli, salad dressing, and potatoes. while all good snacks they don't make a decent meal. Their chilli is not very good either.
Excellent food. This location now has gluten free bread same as Jason's deli! Lots of soup sandwich an salad choices!
High risk of cross contamination for any allergy
You would think that a large chain deli would carry gluten free bread. They provided me an allergen menu, not a gluten free. Items were ordered bread free which were enjoyable. However the location was exceptionally clean with a friendly staff.
Gluten free bread now available! The staff seemed concerned that I had the right bread on my sandwich and I haven't gotten sick!
I eat at Mcalisters at least twice a week for lunch. I have never been disappointed. Love the tea.
Good food and great service!
I've found I can eat Savannah salad and spud max and not get sick. The food is good, but the staff are not aware of gluten free diets. Just trial & error....
Our all time favorite! We eat here several times a week
Their idea of a gluten free menu is a nasty water stained piece of paper on a clipboard behind the counter.
I asked for a gluten free menu and the girl handed me a binder with ingredients for each food item. No gluten free menu inside at all. The content was last updated in April of 2009. There was a long line behind me and I had to stand there and look through the binder and still didn't find any specific listing. Very frustrating.
This place in NOT gluten free. They only provide a list of the allergies in their food. I ended up watching my friends eat
Ewww. Very disappointed. Been twice, will never go back. Salad was dry and baked potatoe was BORING and BLAH!
Not all staff know about the allergy-free menu, so ask for a manager. The chicken salad was very good and so was the potato salad. This northern lady loves the southern sweet tea!
Fresh and tasty choices. Friendly staff.
Loaded spud is awesome! Thank you McAlister's
Fresh and tasty gf options! Knowledgable and friendly staff.
I had much better luck at this location than I've had at others. The staff was friendly and helpful - the cashier even printed a copy of their gluten free menu for me to take home!
Staff was very friendly with me looking up gluten free stuff on my phone. Had a chili nacho, Italian salad, Angus beef spud (no au jus) with potato salad, and wife had cranberry Orange club with Cole slaw. chili nacho was good but it was just a can of chili would of liked a home cooked chili, salad was wonderful def would just get this any day of the week, wife said club was really good but the sauce is potent so ask for a dab instead of a smear, spud was ok the meat was great spud could of been cooked a lil longer, Cole slaw and potato salad was like eating a spoon full of mayo with chunks. Will be keeping this place as a gluten free stop but not often. As of now (15 mins after) not feeling ill. will come back to try more.
They do offer gluten free options, but when I asked to see the gluten-free menu the cashier had no idea what I was talking about. When I explained that I had a food allergy, he got the manager on duty who silently handed me a crumpled-up piece of paper with soup or something all over it. I ordered a baked potato with chili on it and got sick later that night. I would try McAlister's again, but not this location.
No stars because the girl that took my order apperently 'understood' gluten free even asked the cook to change his gloves but when she brought my food it was a sandwich and when I said that is not what I ordered or even gluten free, I ordered a salad and she looked at me dumb-founded and said oh I thought you said sandwich, So that was #1. And now two days later I am so sick, #2. Awful experience.
Always helpful and the Spud Max is delicious!
Now has their gluten-free menu posted in the store. Good food!
No gluten-free options at all! take off list! does not deserve even the one rating
I love going to McAlisters. several things to choose from. Disappointed that the chicken harvest salad which seems to have all gluten free ingredients isn't on the GF menu.
Awesome just remind them to go back and personally talk to chefs to make sure they change their gloves or wash there hands, etc. Sometimes the younger staff don't know what GF is, but the manager always does.
The menu has changed, very little to eat. My wife got sick after eating there.
knowledge of gluten free items was poor. Don't claim to be gf if your staff isnt educated.
The baked potatoes are awesome.
My Wife and I love this place. Great variety and very tasty.
The chicken salad(no bread) of course was excellent!!! The management and staff was great! We will be back'
