WARNING TO THOSE WITH CELIAC DISEASE: If you have celiac disease or are allergic to wheat be VERY careful if you eat here or better yet, just go elsewhere. At least some of the employees have no idea what gluten free means, and I just got a Feta and Watermelon salad that I ordered to be gluten free that had wheat and barley grain (ancient grains) on it. Great, now I get to suffer for weeks with celiac rash... I guess I'm lucky that I don't get DEATHLY ILL like some people do, I just get a terrible rash that makes me want to jump off of a bridge..... all because someone who is working in a restaurant who SHOULD know what gluten free means, doesn't have a clue. Everyone who works in food service should know about food allergies, it could be a matter of life or death to a customer.

They do have gluten conscious cookies which are really good but every time I get one I get glutened. Their salads are delicious and they always offer to make them away from where they make the sandwiches to avoid contamination.

The website offers advice on how to eat gluten-friendly at their restaurant but it is inaccurate. Luckily, a server checked the ingredients for their turkey chili (which they claimed was gluten free) and found out that it has wheat in it! Staff did not seem well trained on the allergy or what substitutions to make. Really unfortunate.

While it seems odd to look for gluten-free choices at a chain with "bread" in its name, there are a few choices here, and the kitchen makes every effort to avoid cross-contamination. The tomato soup (sans croutons) and several of the salads allow those with gluten allergies to join their friends for lunch or dinner. They do not have gluten-free bread or rolls for the sandwiches. I wouldn't make it a regular stop, but if your friends really like Panera, at least you can join them.

Panera has a GF menu but considering the high volume of bread etc they do, they also clearly note that cross contamination is an obvious issue for those with Celiac disease, gluten sensitivity and/or wheat allergy. They do have items like salads and turkey chili listed as GF as well as other items and breakfast choices.

I have had a few salads that were on the GFree menu but have had issues often and avoid them now.

The spring 2015 menu changes really changed the GF options. Instead of 'proton bowls' with eggs and avocado and turkey or steak now the only breakfast choice is steel cut oatmeal, kind of disappointing. They also got rid of the 'steak lettuce wraps' 👎 This location is always nice, and helpful. But they don't have any of the 'hot breakfast' items listed on the gluten conscious menu. 😔

I loved the manager's honesty when I asked about gluten-free food. He said, "Are you kidding? This place is a bakery. Our air probably isn't even gluten-free." Panera Bread seems pretty clueless about where their market is going and what to do about it. I love their apple salad, but do get sick on them. Amazed that after going wheat-free, I can drink coffee all day without being tempted by the pastries.
