Disappointing, the ribs where GF but didn't taste that much. The steaks though where really tasty. The service wasn't that good.
The manager came how to ask if I had Celiac, so they could then guide me through everything. She even had a fresh batch of veg made because their regular veg uses a margarine blend that has a binder!! They have a robust GF menu. Definitely recommend. Service was a bit slow, but I'm so happy they cared I was safe. :)
Gluten free menu was pretty easy to navigate. Food was wonderful. Server was knowledgeable. The most important part... I didn't get sick. It was a success and I would definitely go back.
Can I do a negative star rating? What a disappointment. I took my daughter in law and her friends - all military - here based on the great comments and regret it. The service was poor ( water 25 minutes for my drink which was bottled water, and when I received it it was sparkling not flat. When I was finally able to flag down my waiter and advised him, I wanted another 15 minutes...them was told I needed to wait for him to do other things first. My GF steak salad had no dressing. Server, kitchen and management totally clueless about GF meals. My daughter never received half her meal. He lost our credit card and insulted one of my party. Boo. Management was apologetic but took 15 minutes to come. And the server tried to argue with her! There are many lovely restaurants on the riverwalk. Don't go here.
waiter immediately brought out manager, they checked on what I could eat. no, fries here are not gf, but tasty sweet potato was. excellent service
The wait staff and managers answered all my questions regarding their gluten free menu. Regretfully, not all items shown on the menu (French fries) are not gluten free (not a dedicated fryer, shared with all fried items). However, the manager assured me and my daughter (both with Celiac) that the steak kabobs and garlic mash potatoes were GF (the manager had the chef clean the grill prior to preparing the steaks). Our food was very good and the other members of our family raved about their food. This was our first trip to Saltgrass, and San Antonio plus our first trip since being diagnosed with Celiac. We will be visiting again in the future because of our experience.
Great staff. Very knowledgeable. Pretty big menu to choose from and when I said I had celiac the manager came out and talked to me. They cleaned the grill for me before cooking my food. Awesome dinner!
I was excited about their having a gluten-free menu but not everything on that menu is actually safe to eat. The server and manager took seriously my needs based on my having Celiac disease and they returned after taking my order to inform me that the potato soup and green beans (really?) were not safe for me to eat. Salmon was dry and they had a hard to getting my friend's steak cooked properly. They took a LONG time to bring out the food! Only ice cream for dessert.
nice staff. no way I'd eat here. no dedicated equipment. they just rasp the grill. eeeek!
Went to dinner with family while on a trip. Manger came out and explained not only what I could eat but also how they would prepare the food to ensure I did not get glutened. Was great to know that he was going to prepare it on a separate grill. Said they plan to have a GF menu in near future. Only one down-side...no GF dessert...but not a deal breaker. Would go again in a minute.
My husband and I both ordered Maudeen's Center Cut Filet and it was divine. Best steak I've had in ages! The chef came to the table to let me know what I could safely order and he told me that they're working on a gluten-free menu, but it's not ready yet. (As of December 1, 2012) I was treated very well there by the staff and chef, even though it was a busy Saturday night. They were very considerate and accommodating of my needs. The chef seemed to understand about cross-contamination and let me know that he would fix my food on a separate grill. Next time I'm in San Antonio visiting the Riverwalk, I'd love to go back and have dinner here again! www.saltgrass.com
Our server was very knowledgable. They have a separate GF menu. As do most restaurants, it does have a warning about cross contamination, but they do take special precautions. The GF bread at the beginning of the meal was a treat! We had great food without any problems.
A gluten free menu with false information on it is worse for a celiac than no information at all and just asking the manager. You think you can order safely but it's all a lie. The gluten free menu has shrimp enbrochete, with bacon wrap and bbq sauce. While on the GF menu it is not GF. I spoke with managers at 2 stores (cypress and katy) and the shrimp are deep fried in oil that is not gluten free. If you are gluten free as a choice, maybe saltgrass is OK, but if you have celiac or gluten is going to make your sick, this is terrible that they claim something is GF when in fact it is NOT gluten free. And as a side note don't ever order the fries. They claim they are GF and cooked in a dedicated fryer but after getting my fries with onion ring batter in it over and over I gave up. They always had an excuse as to how that could of happened but the fact of the matter is they cannot safely get me GF french fries. Even if you don't SEE batter, their dedicated fryer has oil in it that has had the major particulate filtered out only. They don't filter out gluten and then they put this grease in the "gluten free" fryer. Be forewarned.
Food is great, i have gave this place several try's they have got my food wrong five times now. I have an allergy to gluten and once i did eat some before i realized it wasn't gluten free. Every time we get food now i have to double check and most times i have to send it back. This is not ok, and the manager thinks its just some game!
I have Celiac Disease and Saltgrass is one of my favorite places to eat! The staff here is so knowledgeable and kind, and the food is amazing. They have one of the most extensive gluten free menus of a chain in town. Definitely try it out!
The staff was unnecessarily rude. We decided not to eat here. Walked to Palio's down the road.
Wonderful service. Great food. The do have fries on the gluten free menu, but I was informed with being handed the gluten free menu that the fries were made in a shared batter. I will definitely go back.
This is definitely the best gluten friendly steakhouse in the area. They have a fairly large gluten free menu and of course they have a lot of steaks to choose from. I don't have immediate symptoms when I eat gluten like most celiacs do but so far I haven't seen any adverse affects.
I thought it was exceptional! Our waitress was very knowledgeable & friendly. She offered gluten free bread to my son. I tried it with honey butter & it was really good. I ordered shrimp 2 ways with sweet potato & salad. It was all delicious & the portions were very big. My son ordered the steak kabob with fries (dedicated fryer!) & green beans. He was very satisfied!

If you have celiac, or have a medical need to avoid gluten DO NOT EAT HERE!!! After explaining to my waiter that I have celiac disease and need my food to be gluten free he made a comment essentially saying how he didn't believe that someone could require a gluten free diet. I reiterated that it was medically necessary and he acted as if he was just joking about the previous comment. Long story short both myself and my younger brother (who is also celiac ) got incredibly sick eating here. The staff does not take gluten free seriously.
Good food, and one of the most complete GF/sensitive menus I've seen (most just kinda list the food items, and you need to cross-reference a real menu to make sense of it). Lots of options.
I personally love the gluten free menu. They made sure it was gluten free when I asked. I love that they had also served it fast and well-made. They payed attention to my order very well, and made sure no mistakes were made with cross contamination. I have the actual Celiac disease, and I feel safe eating there. Food is also very good. I love it there.
BEWARE!!! The food was good, however when we went to pay with our $50 gift card, they AUTOMATICALLY kept 20% off the top "without even asking." Then we had to use our debit card to finish paying. Thus pulling cash out of our pocket to tip. We SHOULD have been able to just use the card, and walk out. VERY DISAPPOINTED!!
We ate here tonight (January 3, 2015). They have a gluten free menu and brought it out immediately upon request. Their menu does state that cross contamination is possible. The menu I used in the restaurant is the same one I found online before coming in. Everything was served as requested and our waitress seemed very knowledgable and accommodating.
They have a separate gluten-free menu, and it's got enough options. It's not for celiacs though - there is cross-contamination in the kitchen. Food was great - ordered the filet with baked sweet potato. Beware it was LOADED with butter. They seemed knowledgable about gluten in their food though.
Great menu however waitress was not knowledgable. Asked if fries were cooked in a dedicated fryer and not with foods like chicken fingers. Waitress responded, " yeah, I'm pretty sure of it" I pressed for more information and asked can you check for sure ? She returned and said "no" it is not dedicated and fries are cooked with everything. I dodged a bullet and if I didn't press for more info I'd be hurting now.
They have a gluten free menu but ask to make sure what you want is gluten free as some of the items are questionable in my opinion -- like the add-ons for a steak may not be-even though they have them listed on the gluten free menu. Staff was very aware of contamination issue. The manager stopped by to explain why I shouldn't get the horseradish butter on my steak (had worchester sauce in it and they didn't know if that was gluten-free which was a good catch on their part). All in all - good food and they have a sincere desire to make sure what you order and what they deliver is gluten free. And I didn't have any problems after eating there.
I always get nervous about chain restaurants that consider themselves gluten-free...but I've eaten here twice and haven't gotten sick. Make sure you discuss everything you order with your server, and even call the manager over...my second time going my server was unaware the fryer was not gluten-free. Delicious hamburgers!
