Clueless, but kind Not even close to gf. Ok for fad dieters only Cross contamination heavy, no understanding of sourcing, shared equipment, or gluten species vinegars Sitting here watching everyone else eat because it is so out of the way. Smells great. Torture!

amazing. sources from Bob's. bakery is super talented. brioche is delicious. if you can't have grains or xanthan, they have grain free and gum free items. <3

staff is amazing. juices, salads, raw lasagne. tasty and totally safe! some items have certified oats, so watch out for that if you don't tolerate them. hope to see you there! (update: white vinegar in olives. no longer dedicated gluten free. talking to owner) (update 2: Owner is so awesome! He is putting staff on alert and getting a new source for olives. WHat a wonderful place!)

working with owner re: issues like vinegar and sourcing from the always risky Trader Joes. they use guar gum, not xanthan. That means milder gummy tummy problems! I won't be eating here for now, but the staff is great.

the bread has too much xanthan for my gummy tummy. calamari and tamales with ranchero sauce were superb!!!! felt safe and appreciated. UPDATE 9/9 PM: so tired that I could barely drive back to San Antonio at 4pm. About to this up. Absolutely got glutened here. update: no one ever called me back about their sourcing and vinegar. boo! UPDATE 9/9: I see Heinz ketchup.. . eeeeep! no white vinegar, even if it meets upcoming fda guidelines for gluten free. no no no. going to talk to the owner about this and other sourcing issues.

looks like they use icky xanthan gum (laxative!) and cheap flours. not sure if flours are made on shared equipment or in shared facilities, but they are not recognized brands or from regulated countries (CA, AUS, UK, EU). very disappointed. not interested. :(

UPDATE 8/14, 2013: kitchen staff awareness and cross-contamination practices have gone down hill. I got so sick that I ended up in urgent care, and the chef wanted to argue with me about where I got glutened. Not returning. UPDATE 9/8: lost 7 lbs from this, and now I'm back to not being on the BMI chart. :( 2012: very cool staff. exec chef's wife is celiac. ask for dedicated equipment. delightful people and superb food.

update may 2013: everything including gluten containing baked goods are now made on site. this kitchen is now f'ed, and I feel like I just lost an 8 year friendship. this was my only safe spot in the east bay for years. I'm so sad. March 2013: once upon a time, cafe gratitude in Berkeley segregated the one gluten item in the kitchen to a dedicated cutting board. this was the one place in the east bay besides pf changs where I felt safe. now that the cafes operate more independently, contaminated tortillas and lax kitchen practices are making people sick. and, the staff is nothing like it used to be. I trust Matt's location in Santa Cruz, and I'm not coming back to the Berkeley location.

drove all the way from Oakland. non gluten free staff lacked knowledge of store screening, labeling regulation, or empathy for why I might need to know if the store had changed policies (e.g. looked like there were some shared facility items now rather than only dedicated). so disappointing and off putting. heading to Safeway.

sf soup company's safety standards are terrible. no way I'm eating here. clueless but will swear up and down their owners are gluten free. no idea how to prep safely or what are high risk ingredients (bacon, vinegar, blue cheese, etc.) very sad when I see places like this are legal here and illegal in the UK -- as they should be.

I was a little hungry and on edge coming in. fingers crossed, but there is A LOT going on in the kitchen. sounds like they understand cross contamination, but still... some of the ingredients are very high risk for GF and CF guests (capers, cow milk, blue cheese, vinegar, chorizo, smoked ham, olives, etc.)
