About Me

I have been living with Celiac Sprue since 2007 and cross contamination is a major problem for me.

I have to agree with the earlier review. I cannot purchase fresh fish or meat at this location. See the pictures that I posted, prepared food containing wheat and gluten products in both the sea food and meat cases that is always either touching or evidence of actual contamination on the fresh meat next to it. I brought this gluten contamination issue to the store's manager and she told me they "cannot guarantee gluten free on any of their fresh fish and meat departments"! And that I should ask them to get my selection from the back. That's all well and good, but the scales and prep areas are still contaminated. This wasn't gluten related I don't believe, but minutes after eating "fresh" red snapper I because extremely ill, not being able to hold down dinner. I made a call to the store and I was then contacted by a third party, apparently I was the only one who got sick eating their red snapper that night. If you have celiac, be extremely cautious when buying fresh meat and fish from this location.

I really don't understand why there are not more businesses like this throughout our Nation. But I digress. Simply put, Healthy Habits Cafe is amazing! I had to drive a round trip to Tampa from the Miami area and I was so grateful to find this gem that was along the way! Lots of options, from sandwiches to wraps and even meals with 2 sides and corn bread! Also a nice selection of desserts, but the best was having frozen yogurt with any topping I wanted! I haven't have ice cream out of the since 2007! Whenever I'm in Lakeland again this place will be on my stop! Thank you from someone who appreciates dedicated gluten free restaurants.

  • Fresh First North

100% gluten free restaurant! Need I say more? But I will, same exact menu as their original location and same level of friendliness. Quality Gluten Free food for all to enjoy, even for those that don't have to eat it, in in fact you probably won't know it's Gluten Free! As always we will be back!!

  • Funky Chicken

    1 starsMarch 28, 2015

I do not think this restaurant truly understands gluten free. I became violently ill after eating their meal this evening. After reading the review that talked about their French Fries not being gluten free due to possible cross contamination it made me pay attention. While filling my glass at the soda fountain I watched a staff member put ribs into a deep fry basket and then pull out a French Fry that was left over and I can only now assume it was also cooked in the same oil. I also witnessed them carry biscuits with tongs over our food on the counter. When the meal was brought out I asked the server, who happened to be that same person who pulled the French Fry from the basket about their fries not being gluten free and what oil they are being cooked in. She assured me they were not cooked in the same oil. 1:30 in the morning and I am sick as a dog, so what I witnessed and what I was told was two different things. Celiac Disease is VERY REAL, and until restaurant owners, managers and their stuff FULLY UNDERSTAND this and stop treating it like like 'diets of choice' that will have no negative effects people will continue to get sick and in turn not dine there. If you have Celiac Disease I would use EXTREME CAUTION dinning at this restaurant, because what they say and do are apparently two different things.

  • Jenni's Noodle House

    2 starsMarch 28, 2015

2027 Post Oak Blvd, Houston, TX 77056

After eating at Jenni's Noodle House for over a year now I have to say that I don't believe they take the proper precautions to ensure the kitchen staff understands that a meal has to be handled safely for a Gluten Free meal. I have been told "the dish is naturally gluten free", with no mention of gluten allergy on the order. So the kitchen staff does not take extra precautions for fresh water for their noodles or cooking surfaces. Use caution dinning here!

  • Cozy Thai Bistro

    5 starsMarch 06, 2015

232 South Allen Street, State College, PA 16801

As mentioned earlier, wonderful Pad Thai! The menu is not marked, nor do they have a gluten free menu, but the supervisor came to our table to explain all the dishes that can be made gluten free, which was a lot. The servers both times made sure the kitchen understood my needs and both times I did NOT get sick. And in fact the table next to ours was also ordering gluten free, so that also told me this restaurant is trusted by those that need to eat safe gluten free food. When we visit State College again we will return for some awesome Pad Thai.

  • Callao Cafe and Market

    5 starsMarch 06, 2015

434 West Aaron Drive #201, State College, PA 16803

It is wonderful to find a place that allows me to enjoy a safe breakfast! Dedicated crepe maker and surface area. Whenever we return to "Happy Valley" we will return for breakfast and lunch!!

  • Zoes Kitchen

    1 starsMarch 05, 2015

4000 Washington Ave, Houston, TX 77007

I was told gluten free was not a problem, but their idea of gluten free is not putting pita bread on the dish. But after I ate the meal I realized I shouldn't of had the rice which turn out to be pilaf!! The gluten free dish should have come with a bean side dish after reviewing their on-line menu. My wife also ordered a gluten free so that we could share, but there was a pasta noodle in it. I am sick as I type this review. If you have celiac stay away from this chain!!

  • Cuchara Restaurant

    5 starsFebruary 08, 2015

214 Fairview St, Houston, TX 77006

Authentic Mexico City bistro that has a lot of naturally gluten free items that are prepared fresh daily. My suggestion would be to introduce yourself and mention your dietary restriction to the owner Ana or her manager, this is what we did and she made sure everything was handled correctly. They also offer a Sunday brunch with corn pancakes that we are looking forward to trying.

  • Zocca

    3 starsFebruary 08, 2015

420 West Market Street, San Antonio, Texas

Our visit to the city included two meals eaten at this restaurant. Dinner and then breakfast. Dinner was busy and the meal which was a pasta dish that tasted fine. They had gluten free bread but it was only sliced sandwich bread as opposed rolls. We decided to give breakfast a try and was looking forward to French Toast, but after talking to our waiter and learning they cook it on the same griddle that also cooks the gluten products I decided against it and went with the egg white omelet. Our server was great after learning I could eat anything off a shared surface and made the kitchen redo my dish's vegetables because at first it was on the griddle. I didn't get sick, so that's good news and the reason why I didn't give them 5 stars is because there is a risk for those with celiac. If I come back we will more than likely dine here again but not without talking to everyone before hand!

  • Green Wave Cafe

    5 starsFebruary 08, 2015

    5221 W Broward Blvd, Plantation, FL 33317

I am not Vegan, but Celiac, and I have to say this was an overall awesome experience! Our server was extremely friendly and she took the time to explain everything, and I mean everything! The dishes were loaded with flavor and even better yet all the ingredients were natural and organic. They also do not use Soy or Tofu which is a another big plus in my book. The strawberry and kiwi cheesecake was great and they even make their own almond milk, where most places would probably just pour the store brands with ingredients most cannot pronounce. We will be back whenever we are in town.

  • The Little Aussie Bakery & Cafe

    5 starsDecember 29, 2014

    3610 Avenue B, San Antonio, TX 78209

Wonderful dedicated GF business!! It's wonderful to be able to walk into a restaurant and order anything!! We had the Pot Pie and Personal Pizza, the food overall was good, the pizza reminded me of Pizza Hut.... Crispy and a little greasy. But when you have celiac, eating any pizza outside that of a frozen tasteless one is a welcomed pleasure. When visit San Antonio we will definitely return!!

  • Nature's Garden Market Cafe

Prepared meals for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The majority of the meals are now gluten free, but to be sure you're getting the right meal there's always someone there to help. Friendly staff and they have microwaves and a seating for the meal on the go. It took awhile to try them because of some of the reviews, but now that I did, I'm very happy I did.

    3 starsSeptember 01, 2014

2311 West Alabama Street, Houston, TX 77098

(UPDATE) I've eaten here almost once a week since moving here and I have to sadly say my last three visits have gotten me sick. Hopefully they can get this sorted out! Great experience and wonderfully prepared dishes. The meal came out with Gluten Free cards to reassure they received order correctly. We will be going back for sure, but like mentioned earlier we will not be having the pizza for the risk of cross contamination... But no worries they have plenty of other dishes to choose from.

  • Torchy's Tacos

    1 starsSeptember 01, 2014

    350 W 19th St, Houston, TX 77008

It REALY, REALLY, REALLY (did I say really) saddens me to write this review, this place is very cool, the staff durning my visit was extremely friendly and the food tasted wonderful.... BUT, if you have Celiac with sensitivity to cross contamination then Torchy's isn't for you unfortunately. It's really sad that there are so few places such as this business that cannot provide safe options for people with Celiac without causing serious negative health side effects. If you're gluten free because of a lifestyle choice then this is a wonderful option. Sorry for the negative review, I was truly hopeful.

  • Max's Wine Dive

    5 starsJuly 14, 2014

    214 Fairview St #2, Houston, TX 77006

Those with Celiac, I have two words for you....FRIED CHICKEN!!!!!They had a nice selection of gluten free food and the server even brought out freshly made gluten free donuts! I never eat fried food at restaurants for the simple reason of cross contamination, but this business has a dedicated space along with a dedicated fryer!!The server also told me the reason they're so careful is that the owner cannot eat gluten either. Whether the owner has Celiac or not they are taking the correct steps in order to prevent cross contamination. We will be back!!

  • Snap Kitchen

    3 starsMay 17, 2014

3600 Kirby Dr, Houston, TX 77098

This location had all the same selections of food as the others and they also can make fresh personalized salads. I would have given them 5 stares but the past couple of times I've been at this location there has been pita chips and crumbs around the section they are stored. It is really too bad since these pita chips are the only items that contain gluten. It would be nice if they were stored and served away from the naturally gluten free items.

  • Freebirds

Sorry, but I walked in and then I walked out after watching the serving spoons making contact with the flour shells ahead of me. After reading some of the latest reviews it looks like I made the correct decision. This is really too bad, there's such limited choices, if at all, for people with celiac while we're away from home.

  • Gluten Free Nation

    5 starsMarch 18, 2014

Great selections, breakfast, lunch and dinner with 99.99% of their choices being gluten free. The extremely friendly staff told me they will be going completely Gluten Free very soon. The concept is also unique, either bring home the meal or heat it up and enjoy it right then and there. They will now be added to safe stops when I am out running around away from home.

  • Indika

    5 starsJanuary 06, 2014

516 Westheimer Road, Houston, TX 77006

What a wonderful dining experience! Learned about this business from a local blog about Celiac friendly restaurants in the Houston area so we decided to give it a try. After speaking with Eliana, the manager I instantly felt like I was in good hands! They brought out a thin cracker and right away I started saying I cannot have any gluten and TO MY SURPRISE these crackers were gluten free!!! It's been 7 years since I've been able to have a starch before and durning a meal outside of our home! The soup, salad and main course was simply fantastic!! They flavors and spices of our dishes were perfect and with a wonderful atmosphere our visit was a wonderful experience. We will be back!!

  • Chipotle

    1 starsDecember 22, 2013

    2027 S. Shepherd Rd., Houston, TX 77019

I just cannot understand how a great chain like Chipotle can offer completely different experiences based on region. St. Louis gets it! Houston does not!! This location was my second attempt to eat Chipotle in our new city of Houston, the first location changed their gloves but then began handling a floor tortilla and when I said I wanted a "naked burrito bowl" I was told they don't have them! I said I'll come back another time. Then I gave this location a try because if the previous reviews. I told them I needed to eat gluten free and they looked at me like it was the first time they heard of gluten. When we got to the cheese and lettuce I asked if they had fresh batches below because of the gloves with flour reaching into it. They said it was fresh today and it was all they had, even after I said I cannot have anything that touched flour, so I went without cheese and lettuce. Then the topper, they comped the meal when I got to register, they thought I was asking for a "FREE" meal! Thank you for the free meal but I really enjoy paying for my gluten free meals that are prepared properly! Please Houston and Chipotle please offer people who don't have a choice reliable gluten free meals and options!

  • P.F. Chang's

    5 starsNovember 30, 2013

4094 Westheimer Road, Houston, TX 77027

Old reliable once again! It's nice to be able to walk into a P.F. Chang's whether in MO, FL or TX and know you're getting the same quality food without the fear of the staff or kitchen not understanding the needs of someone who has to be GF. They were extremely busy but they didn't skip a beat!

  • Niko Niko's

    3 starsNovember 30, 2013

2520 Montrose Boulevard, Houston, TX 77006

We tried this restaurant for the first time and they were extremely busy. Not the most idea time for someone with Celiac. The cashier understood my needs and we actually spoke for a minute about having to eat GF. But there was a breakdown after the cashier and my order came out with pita bread sitting in the middle of the dish. They refunded my meal, but halfway through watching my wife eat her dish the cashier came to our table with a fresh meal and said sorry. This was an extremely nice gesture and I didn't get sick, but I don't know just how quickly I will be returning.

  • Crave Sushi

    5 starsNovember 30, 2013

2900 Travis Street, Houston, TX 77006

Very nice dining experience! As mentioned earlier, they provide GF Soy Sauce and as a bonus they will make any roll less the items that contain sauces or ingredients that we cannot have. We will be going back!!

  • Maggiano's

    1 starsNovember 05, 2013

2019 Post Oak Blvd, Houston, TX 77056-4401

Sadly we had to give this location a one because of unfortunately being gluten'd. We have dined at another Maggiano's dozens of times with no incident and like mentioned below the chef would always come to our table. Here we had to ask and it didn't seem this is what they did, right off the bat I became nervous and sure enough I was feeling sick before we left to go home. We are new to Houston and sadly this location is a one and done for us. If you're Celiac I wouldn't recommend this location, sorry.

  • Company Cafe

    5 starsOctober 18, 2013

Wonderful experience, I have not had fried chicken since 2007 and it was wonderful!! We enjoyed it so much we had breakfast there the following morning!! GF bagel!! Wonderful cake!! And most importantly they had "attention Celiac" listed twice on the order receipt!! Outdoor dinning and they're even pet friendly!! In Dallas this is a must.

  • P.F. Chang's

    5 starsOctober 06, 2013

2418 East Sunrise Boulevard, Fort Lauderdale, FL 33304

Friendly staff and like all P.F. Chang's a nice selection of gluten free dishes. This location also has a "seasonal" menu item as well.

  • Fresh First

    5 starsSeptember 27, 2013

1637 Southeast 17th Street, Fort Lauderdale, FL 33316

I have only dined at four 'dedicated gluten free' restaurants and all of them were wonderful, but, Fresh First stands out amongst all if them and most regular restaurants as well. The quality of their gluten free food and extensive selection is OUTSTANDING! It's nice to walk into and establishment having the ability to order anything! Their food is local and organic, their desserts are fabulous and the ownership is extremely pleasant. 5 stars and a must visit while in Southern Florida. We can only hope other restaurants follow suit across the country!

  • Weezie's Gluten Free Kitchen

  • Golden Wok

    5 starsJuly 19, 2013

15941 Manchester Road, Ellisville, MO 63011

Awesome experience and it was the first time I was able to eat Thai since getting diagnosed!!! Diana was VERY knowledgable and most importantly genuinely concerned about my dietary restriction and in fact I don't know who was more excited about me being able to enjoy some of my old favorites again. The food was wonderful and we will be going back again! If you're in the area and want some Curry you must stop in, Diana will take great care of you! She also did mention the next time they print menus they will highlight their gluten free items, which is most of their menu.

  • Blue Duck Cafe and Bakery

  • Smokehouse Market

    5 starsMay 21, 2013

16806 Chesterfield Airport Road, Chesterfield, MO 63005

At a last minute lunch gathering I called ahead to check to see if they offered gluten free. They positively assured me they could and when we showed up the chef knew I was coming. Wonderfully prepared lunch, 5 stars all around! They did tell me that it helps if call ahead so they could inform the chef and prepare. I will be back!

  • Milagro Modern Mexican

    2 starsApril 28, 2013

20 Allen Avenue #130, Webster Groves, MO 63119

There is NOT a 'gluten free menu' and there is NOT a 'dedicated fryer' at this restaurant. Chips are NOT gluten free since they don't have a decided fryer and it is very difficult to enjoy Mexican without chips and salsa when everyone around you is enjoying them. The staff was very friendly and knowledgeable and there are options on the menu but they have to be explained and pointed out. The food was well prepared. I would have given more stars if the listing wasn't misleading and if they were more GF friendly compared to other truly GF friendly dinning locations.

  • Pei Wei

Great gluten free fries!! Great gluten free appetizers!! Great place to watch a football game!! I would have given them 5 stars but I believe I was affected by cross contamination while having their nachos once. We have been back and haven't had further issues, but with this being said I haven't had their nachos.

WOW!!! It was so very nice to have brunch away from home. They were extremely busy when we showed up, we almost left since quite/off hours seem to be better times to eat gluten free. Luckily we stayed and had a wonderful experience! With Celiac I didn't get sick and we will be back!!

  • Yemanja Brasil

    5 starsApril 18, 2013

2900 Missouri Ave, St Louis, MO 63118

Simply fantastic food. Dishes and flavors that were so unique, made eating out very exciting again for someone with Celiac. While almost all the dishes are naturally gluten free (as MOST meals should be) it was a little unsettling when we spoke to the owner and server about Celiac and the risks of cross contamination, their overall knowledge wasn't as strong as we had hoped for. Good news is I didn't get sick, I believe if more people with this disease speaks to the owner and management they will learn much more about it. We will be returning to this little gem of a restaurant!!!

Confused, there is a big disclaimer on their menu that states if you have Celiac you shouldn't eat here since they cannot control cross contamination. I work right down the road but I will not eat here. If you have Celiac this is not the place for us according to their warning.

  • Chipotle

    1 starsDecember 28, 2012

Last time eating here I got sick due to cross contamination. I actually asked them to make me another dish since the first one had my wife's flour shell laying over my dish. It has great potential but if cross contamination is not understood than unfortunately customers like me cannot dine here.
