• Dogz Bar and Grill

5300 East 2nd Street, Long Beach, CA 90803

Standard hot dogs with good variety of toppings. Great that they have GF buns. If you go in on a Tuesday during the mini dog special, they will cut the GF bun in half so you still can order discounted dogs.

5110 East 2nd Street, Long Beach, CA 90803

Knowledgeable staff. Nice selection of GF beer and cider. Great tasting food. It's not listed on the menu, but they have GF buns for the burgers/sandwiches. They also grilled fish for my sandwich to make it wheat-free even though the current seasonal offering is usually breaded and fried. * note that I have a wheat sensitivity, so I can't confirm everything would be ok for someone with celiac.

  • Sushi on Fire

    4 starsApril 22, 2015

5325 East 2nd Street, Long Beach, CA 90803

I found the staff knowledgeable and helpful selecting sushi without wheat. They have tamari upon request, so you don't have to carry your own. The fish is always fresh and they don't weigh it down with all the sauces that make it challenging at other venues. note: I have a wheat sensitivity, not celiac, so potential cross-contamination is not a problem for me.

The ice cream is great. The cookies (I tried GF chocolate chip) were a little lacking in my opinion. I don't have celiac, just a wheat sensitivity, so I did not ask about contamination risk. They did ask me if they needed to change their gloves due to my allergy.

1159 Locust Street, Walnut Creek, CA 94596

I have a wheat allergy, not celiac, so I can't vouch for the kitchen safety. Contamination risk seems high if you are very sensitive because it's a tight space. Their GF bread is delicious--so soft with a great texture. The staff usually ask if you have an allergy if you order GF, but not always, so be sure to point it out. Also, the staff has told me on two occasions that their vegan meats are wheat-free, but they aren't marked GF on the website so I'm not sure I trust the answer.

  • Sasa

    3 starsAugust 20, 2013

1432 North Main Street, Walnut Creek, CA 94596

Note: I have a wheat allergy, not celiac. I love Asian food, so we are always looking for good options in the area. Awesome to learn that Sasa has a GF menu and carries tamari so I don't have to bring my own. The knowledge of servers can be inconsistent, but most items we have tried have been excellent. Sushi is typical for the area (acceptable, but nothing to rave about...much better when you pass on all the mayo-based sauces). The entrees are solid.

I nice alternative to Chipotle as there is more variety in the toppings. You can get burrito bowls or salads. They have corn tortillas available for tacos, but you will want to verify they are GF as they aren't included on the allergen menu on their website.

It may depend on your server, but I have had great luck customizing meals to avoid wheat, eggs and dairy due to multiple allergies. They offer corn pasta as a GF option for all of their pasta dishes. Fish tacos are excellent. Flourless chocolate cake is yummy, but does have almond or hazelnut in it, so no good if you have a nut allergy.

Such delicious GF goodies. Plus they have GF and vegan treats for those with multiple sensitivities. I was very excited to find their cream-filled cupcakes in Whole Foods in Lafayette so I don't have to drive far to get my fix.

  • The Original Pancake House

    4 starsMarch 04, 2013

2059 Contra Costa Boulevard, Pleasant Hill, CA 94523

It's not on the menu, but this place offers GF pancakes and waffles. You can order pretty much any of their fabulous flavors and they will make a GF batter for you. Your food will take longer because they make it when it is ordered vs their buttermilk batter that is already prepared. I had the GF pumpkin pancakes and you could barely tell the difference between GF and regular ( my husband taste tested for me).

  • P.F. Chang's

    4 starsMarch 04, 2013

1205 Broadway Plaza, Walnut Creek, CA 94596

What a nice surprise. Solid GF menu with a good variety. I'm most impressed that they have a dedicated area in the kitchen for preparing GF food to avoid contamination. This is a chain who really understands the need to support dietary restrictions. And the flourless chocolate torte was great!

  • Claim Jumper

    2 starsMarch 04, 2013

    1981 Diamond Blvd., CONCORD, CA

I went into this with low expectations and was still disappointed. Wait Staff was not knowledgeable at all about ingredients or menu, except to say that the GF menu was several years old and did not reflect the current restaurant menu. Food was ok. Better than Black Angus, a step below Outback.

  • Tender Greens

    5 starsMarch 04, 2013

Our family loves Tender Greens for the fresh, organic, locally sourced food. The staff is knowledgeable about allergens will guide you to customize your meal, as needed.

  • BJ's Brewhouse

    4 starsMarch 04, 2013

385 Sun Valley Mall, Concord, CA 94520

I have had great luck with servers who have ensured my meals were allergen free. There is decent variety on the GF menu (you can check it out online) and the GF Pizzookie dessert was awesome.

  • Melo's

    2 starsMarch 04, 2013

1660 Contra Costa Blvd, Pleasant Hill, CA 94523

The other reviewer must have had some bad pizza elsewhere, because this was the worst GF pizza crust I have eaten. Hard, tasteless sawdust pressed together into a brick like substance.

  • Rubio's

    3 starsMarch 04, 2013

2390 Monument Blvd., Pleasant Hill, CA 94523

Great allergen menu available online that tells you what your best options are and how to custom order. Food is decent quality-- similar to Baja Fresh or La Salsa.

  • Chipotle

    4 starsMarch 04, 2013

60 Crescent Dr., Pleasant Hill, CA 94523

Chipotle's menu is so simple, there's no guesswork. The flour tortillas are the only item with gluten, so burritos and quesadillas are out, but tacos (with corn tortillas), bowls, and salads are still great options.

  • Kobe Japan

    4 starsFebruary 23, 2013

1918 Oak Park Boulevard, Pleasant Hill, CA 94523

Great for takeout since they don't stock tamari. Staff is knowledgeable and will customize to cut wheat. For example, they will prepare a great grilled salmon for your bento box in lieu of teriyaki. Sushi is incredibly fresh and so tasty without the sauces.

  • Chef Jon Lee Asian Confusion Cuisine

    4 starsFebruary 23, 2013

1250 Newell Avenue, Walnut Creek, CA 94596

One of the toughest parts of going GF is missing out in great Asian cuisine. Chef Jon Lee stocks tamari with no wheat so a lot of dishes can be made gluten free. They also have rice noodles for some of the noodle dishes. Everything is freshly prepared when ordered and its so good.

GF foods noted on menu and they can accommodate other allergies, too. Wait Staff and chef are very accommodating. A bonus: they have GF tamari so you don't have to bring your own if you want to eat sushi.
