We used to go in to Papa's quite a bit, but due to his location and our work schedule it hasn't been possible for a while. Well we finally got over there and so glad we did. New Menu was excellent to be able to tell what was okay or could be done gluten free. If it doesn't have Bread, Wrap or Roux it's probably good to go! We had the chicken po boy over rice, red beans and rice, coleslaw and applesauce. Yumm!!!! Thanks Papa and Mama for training your staff. They actually asked when we ordered Gluten Free: "Is this a preference or allergy". We said allergy and they said we ask because the allergy requires special handling, changing gloves, getting items from another area, etc. Wow thank YOU!!!!!

  • St. Yared Ethiopian Cuisine & Coffeehaus

Ok get ready for something relatively UNBELIEVABLE! When we arrived, we asked the owner (who was extremely hospitable and helpful) what was gluten free. Her response! Get ready was: "EVERYTHING on our menu is gluten free, except for the bread". She is willing to try to make the Ethiopian Bread as well but has tried and the recipe doesn't hold like it does back home. We had a meat combination with 2 veggie choices. We ate chicken (HOT), Beef (Medium) and Lamb (Mild). We loved the lamb, but the beef and chicken were flavorful as well. I loved the medium spice.; It was perfect. Just zippy enough with plenty of flavor. We had the collared greens and cabbage as sides. For those of you who don't like collared greens or cabbage, you need to try these anyway. They are perfectly seasoned and so fresh/flavorful. Then, guess what? We also had Gluten Free Tiramisu. WOW! It was great. So good that I asked to have a couple to go and we had the last one (so darn, now I have to go back!) The owner also made us a beautiful salad with lettuce, tomato's, onions, cucumbers and green beans and a dressing that was perfect. The green beans were really fresh and wonderful! She offered that since we could not eat the bread. How thoughtful! The Ethiopian tea was excellent! Black tea spiced/infused with cinnamon, cloves and cardamon. Will be making this at home for sure. Loved it and loved the refills!

  • The Tamale Place

    5 starsAugust 19, 2014

5226 Rockville Rd, Indianapolis, IN 46224

I have lived and traveled all over the country. I missed the tamale's I used to eat in California and went here not expecting much. Not only was I so pleasantly surprised, my 12 year old LOVED his meal. We tried the Chicken Tamale in Green Sauce, The pork tamale in green sauce, the one with chocolate and nuts, their homemade chips and their fish tacos. EVERYTHING was GREAT. We spent $32 for 3 of us and took home over half of our meal because the portions were generous and filling. LOVE this place and will definitely return. We went to the one on the Southside of Indy. Wish there was one North or a bit closer to us, but we won't let that stop us from returning at some point. Everything was home made and there was a lot of variety. Hard to know what to order because they had so many choices. After eating their tamales and fish taco's, it will be impossible for me to make taco's with all the hard and processed shells out there. Now I'm spoiled and want fresh! Their salsa is excellent. I love HOT, and found that their hot salsa isn't just hot, but flavorful.

  • Saranello's

    1 starsAugust 19, 2014

601 North Milwaukee Avenue, Wheeling, IL 60090

They are getting 1 star because you have to put something in there to rate them. We went in to the restaurant for a later lighter dinner/snack. We were seated and the bus staff put water on our table. We sat there for 15 minutes, while the server walked past us to the table next to us and waited on them twice. The restaurant was very empty and she didn't even bother to acknowledge us. After sitting there for 15 minutes reviewing a very scarce gluten-free menu and not being able to ask any questions, we left. We walked across the parking lot to Cooper's Hawk where we had great service and a great gluten-free meal (will be writing about that outing shortly).

This restaurant did NOT disappoint. We were staying at the Westin and had a not so pleasant experience at Saranello's. We walked across the parking lot to Cooper's Hawk. They were closing the kitchen in a half an hour, but didn't act like we were a bother. They spent time going through the menu and while we were waiting for our food (since we ordered to go), we spent time at the Wine Tasting. The gal who assisted us was quite knowledgeable and we were also listening to the other servers conversation who was very knowledgeable. We enjoyed tastes of the Cabernet-White Zinn combo, Moscato and the Pomegranate wines. I like sweeter wines so enjoyed the Moscato and Pomegranate wines. I did not care for the Cabernet-White Zinn combination, but my husband enjoyed that. We ordered the COOPER'S HAWK CHICKEN GIARDINIERA$16.99 Parmesan Breaded Chicken, Shaved Parmesan, Mary’s Potatoes CHICKEN MADEIRA$17.99 Mushrooms, Provolone, Mary’s Potatoes, Asparagus The parmesan crusted chicken was excellent and my 12 year old loved it. We ordered the GIARDINIERA sauce on the side and am glad we did. It had a bit of a kick to it and my son didn't really care for the taste. I liked it, but then I love veggies and spices so it was perfect for me! The Chicken Madeira was excellent and the chicken almost melted in our mouths it was so tender. There were lots of mushrooms and it had a perfect taste. We ordered a white chocolate truffle and a turtle truffle which were awesome! We also ordered the Creme Brulee for dessert and there was plenty for all 3 of us to enjoy. We were so glad that Cooper's Hawk was there close by to save the day when we wanted a later dinner and weren't treated so well at Saranello's. We will definitely return!

  • Wildberry Pancakes & Cafe

We loved the Gluten Free Honey Cakes. No syrup needed for sure! We had less than stellar service, but the food was good. IF our service was a bit better, would have given it 5 stars. We sat with our empty dishes on the table for over 15 minutes. The skillet breakfasts were large with enough for 2 people (but my husband managed to eat it all!). The sausage links were large and the omelettes were also quite large. Hash browns were good (but needed hot sauce on the table instead of ketchup). I know a lot of people eat ketchup on their hash browns but I prefer hot sauce on mine and on my eggs. The service was very slow when we went, but they were busy. The server walked by our table several times with her back to us and didn't pay much attention to the fact we could have used a refill. She was friendly, but didn't seem to be very good at table / customer management. Was walking back and forth an awful lot when she could have checked on her tables and then ran back to where ever. Took a long time to get our check and to then get our receipt back. If you want to go some place where you can talk over your meal this place may be a bit difficult as it was very loud. The food was good, but the restaurant was extremely loud for a Friday morning at 10:00 am.

  • Da Luciano Pizza, Pasta and Catering

    5 starsAugust 19, 2014

8343 W Grand Ave, River Grove, IL 60171

The review I just read on TripAdvisor was not very favorable, so it made me want to write this review. Our meal was awesome and we have had authentic Italian in other areas of the world. The salad was packed full of cucumbers, tomato's and shredded carrots. We had one the house dressing and one with the creamy garlic. The creamy garlic dressing is definitely my favorite. We always make sure we go to DaLuciano when we can. Since it's about a 4 hour drive, when we visit Chicago, we make time for a great gluten free meal or two at Da Luciano. The last time we were there the owners were so friendly and paid special attention to our child. A couple the boys (with Celiac) also had come out to talk to him. This time the server was incredibly attentive and friendly. We were there a couple times, so it may sound like we over ordered (which we did), and we had great left overs to cart back home with us. I just finished eating one of the meals for lunch today! For appetizers we ordered: Grigliata di Pesce - This is a large plate with octopus, squid and grilled shrimp over a bed of spinach and roasted red/green peppers. The peppers and spinach were seasoned to perfection and the grilled shrimp was awesome. Wish there would have been more shrimp on the appetizer. The squid and octopus were okay. Fried Mozzarella Wedges - I have tried on several occasions to make fried cheese wedges (gluten free), but have failed miserably. These were crunchy, tasty and served with a marinara sauce. We ordered: Pasta Boscaiola - Sausage and mushrooms in a light tomato cream sauce - This dish was one of our new favorites. It was so good. The light tomato cream sauce was amazing! Pasta Porcini - Porcini mushrooms in a light cream sauce - Another very good meal for sure and lots of left overs! Chicken Vesuvio - with versuvio potato's. The oil/veggies and seasoning on this meal was wonderful. Meat Ravioli - Again the ravioli was stuffed very full and I could not eat all my meal for sure! Pepperoni and cheese pizza - Our son likes their pizza a lot. Wish we could get a deep dish pizza that was gluten free. For dessert over the couple of days we had: Cannoli's - that were awesome Lemon Ice that is perfect for cleaning the palate and soothing the stomach Tiramisu - If you aren't a chocolate fan you may not prefer this, but I like the cake portion and the cream portion. Cupcakes Ok any time you can go to a restaurant and actually order appetizers, entree's and desserts that are gluten free, it's a good day and that's why we try to go to Da Luciano any time we are any where near Chicago. Thanks for another great visit!!!! We'll see you again in a few months (well after winter any way).

  • Kappy's Restaurant & Pancake House

    3 starsAugust 19, 2014

We stopped here after being told it would be over an hour to wait for breakfast at another local place. We found them on the Find Me Gluten Free App. They had several gluten-free choices for breakfast, lunch and dinner but we went with the breakfast menu. We ordered gluten-free pancakes that were okay. We may have liked them better had we not had Wildberry's Honey Cakes a few days ago. They were buttermilk pancakes and were a bit bland. Of course, after you add maple syrup that was warm and yummy they aren't so bland any more. They also had Amy's Organic Chicken & Maple sausage which was really good! The scrambled eggs and hash browns were just okay. I would have liked to have had some hot sauce or possibly ketchup for the hash browns and hot sauce for the eggs, but none was offered and I didn't see any on the tables anywhere. Our server disappeared for a while so I couldn't ask her if they had them. I would have rated higher if she would have checked back with us within a minute or two of getting our food, but she didn't. It was also very loud in here, so if you are looking for some place quiet this place isn't it! Decent food and decent portion sizes, but could work on the flavor issue a bit.

Call ahead for GF saganaki (flaming cheese). Excellent! The Pork Souvlaki is melt in your mouth tender and juicy and wonderful. The chicken souvlaki, florini's and rice pudding are also excellent. This is one of our fave places.

They don't have a dedicated menu, but can make a few things: Ham, potato's, eggs, omelette, bacon and sausage. We all ordered gluten free since I don't have to but do because my husband and son are both GF. Just easier that way. Our breakfast came and I had half my Gluten-free omelette eaten, when our server brought out a new one to me and said the cook said she put bread on that omelette before it was served to you. I was glad that it was mine and not my son's breakfast, but then I wondered how careful are they in the back? I didn't need the other omelette and wished they would have been a bit more careful and had checked with me before they cooked another one. I did appreciate that they did that, but the omelette was half eaten before they told me it had bread on it. Hoping they are a bit more careful for people who have severe reactions from either celiac or non celiac gluten sensitivity issues.

We had the cheese fries as an appetizer. They were really good and everyone enjoyed them. We ordered a create your own burger (cheese/bacon), grilled pork tenderloin sandwich and a small buffalo chicken salad. We also ordered the home made chips. Had we known they were more like fries then chips, we would have not ordered them as our side. We enjoyed our lunch. Great little place for families and for a quick bite /drink in the bar (if you are without your kids). No reactions from anyone in our party and we have one that will react quickly from cross contamination. Nice to have a place with a full menu that is pretty close to home. Our 12-year-old son wants to go back.

Great service Zoey thanks! We enjoyed the GF pizza and had a couple with custom toppings. The fresh mozz was great with bacon, pepperoni, mushrooms, red peppers, etc. The server was fabulously attentive and could not have been better. It was also nice to see they actually had a couple desserts we could order. We even had a couple gluten free beer's with our dinner. GREAT to see there were three beer selections and a cider and it wasn't Michelob... THANK YOU!!!!!! We have NEVER had a beer with our GF pizza while dining out. Would love to see you come up with a deep dish crust recipe like your fabulous deep dish non GF pizza. Please? :) Our son reacts quickly to anything that even looks like it might have gluten in it and NO reaction whatsoever. We were thrilled. MANY other places around the area claim to have gluten free pizza but it's just a crust with some veggies and they have NO clue about whether the meat has gluten in it or not. We were so glad we made the little extra drive to Pi's Pizzaria and if we get to DC or other areas around St. Louis where they are we will DEFINITELY be back. They also have a milk shake bar where they serve shakes, root beer floats and purple cow's. Used to LOVE purple cow's when I was a kid. Thanks again for the friendly, knowledgeable staff!
