Amy the Family Chef

About Me

I'm a mom, foodie, cooking instructor and now a cookbook author! Our family eats gluten-free by choice but we all feel much better for different reasons. I love finding good gluten-free restaurants because I don't always want to be in the kitchen!

  • Primal Food & Spirits

    5 starsAugust 14, 2015

    202 N Carolina 54 #107, Durham, NC 27713

Amazing food in a fun setting. You'd never know its GF! Mostly paleo/primal with a couple of exceptions. Such a good meal. They are now making their own bread, too.

  • The Pit

    5 starsAugust 12, 2015

    328 W Davie St, Raleigh, NC 27601

Perfect BBQ food. Meat is tender and flavorful. Really like the brisket and baby back ribs. Most sides are gf; just ask.

  • Pacific Catch

    4 starsMay 26, 2015

    243 S B St, San Mateo, CA 94401

Gluten-free menu available. Great green curry with salmon. The gf menu could have more items considering how big the menu is.

  • Firefly Restaurant

    5 starsMay 25, 2015

    4288 24th St, San Francisco, CA 94114

Amazing meal with fresh ingredients. We started with the seeded gf bread and had a variety of appetizers plus one entree. I would describe the menu as California cuisine. The menu doesn't seem to be super kid friendly (although I didn't ask if there were other options). However, our kids found plenty of things they liked. The only gluten items are the regular bread and a few desserts. Owners are parents of celiac kids.

  • Senza Gluten

    5 starsApril 20, 2015

206 Sullivan Street, New York, NY 10012

I was in heaven at this 100% gf restaurant! We had bruschetta, chicken parm, cous cous (corn based) and chocolate molten cake. A must see if you are gluten-free!

    5 starsNovember 22, 2014

    134 S B St, San Mateo, CA 94401

DD was able to get a gluten-free vegan cookie with soy ice cream. She was in heaven. They are very careful when putting the ice cream on the cookies. I watched and asked questions. It's always a good idea to remind them if you are intolerant.

  • Seville Tapas Inc.

    5 starsNovember 22, 2014

450 Capistrano Rd, Half Moon Bay, CA 94019

The owner is very aware of gluten-free. As with any restaurant, you have to be careful and double check. Once they gave me croutons and I said "Sorry, it's supposed to be gluten-free." The waiter apologized and said "I'm so sorry. We will make a new one right away." It was nice that I didn't have to tell them that. The food is delicious as well as the wine. The owner is from Spain so the food is authentic. The gf rolls are really good. I think you get a lot of food for the $$.

  • Sam's Chowder House

    5 starsNovember 22, 2014

4210 Cabrillo Highway North, Half Moon Bay, CA 94019

They do a very good job but make sure to read the menu carefully and don't make assumptions. We have had only good experiences there. Many things can be made gluten-free. The chef is very aware of how to accommodate gf.

  • White Elephant Thai Cuisine

    5 starsNovember 22, 2014

50 Cabrillo Hwy N, Half Moon Bay, CA 94019

5 stars for quality, service, and attention to detail. On more than one occasion, they have said "We are so sorry; we added regular soy sauce instead so we had to remake it." I have not asked for the wok to be recleaned but have not had a reaction. Curries are delicious. The chicken satay is a fave of our kids. I believe they have gf soy or some type of marinade.

  • Willow Street Wood-Fired Pizza

    4 starsNovember 22, 2014

1554 Saratoga Ave, San Jose, CA 95129

I'm giving them a 4 because there are limitations on what you can order gluten-free (as of today, there were only about 4 different gf pizzas). It says on the menu "no substitutions". We ended up having a cheeseless cheese pizza (our dd is df) and had sausage on the side. I would have preferred for them to put the toppings on. The staff was super friendly and helpful. The pizza (from French Meadow bakery) came on a metal tray with a knife for cutting so the experience felt very safe. The sauce for the pizza is very flavorful; not the usual tomato sauce with dried herbs. It tasted like real tomatoes. We also ordered the grilled salmon over spinach salad. Salmon good but the salad was nothing spectacular. Surroundings are very casual so it's great for a family. There are lots of TV's, too.

  • Asian Box

    5 starsOctober 08, 2014

855 El Camino Real, Town & Country Village, Palo Alto, CA 94301

This small restaurant chain is doing a bang-up business serving simply made yet delicious and very fresh Asian rice and noodle dishes. The whole restaurant is gluten-free so no need to ask about cross contamination or the soy sauce!

  • Coconuts Fish Cafe

    4 starsAugust 28, 2014

    1279 S Kihei Rd, Kihei, HI 96753

Very tasty lunch at a reasonable price. Fish taco a bit fancy for my son and coleslaw was a little spicy (but I liked it). Grilled ahi lunch plate also good. Wish they had dedicated fryer for fries and/or would consider making a gf batter. 4 stars for that.

  • Star Noodle

    5 starsAugust 28, 2014

286 Kupuohi St, Maui, HI 96761

The prior review was spot on; be prepared to wait at dinner time. Not sure what it's like during the day. Waitstaff was awesome. Our server was also gf. The Vietnamese crepes were the highlight. They usually have gf tamari, too. Cool vibe and good drinks. Best meal this week.

  • Slappy Cakes

    5 starsAugust 28, 2014

3350 Lower Honoapiilani Road, Lahaina, HI 96761

They provide a gluten-free/vegan batter. You make your own pancakes on a griddle in the middle of the table. My kids were in heaven. Gf batter made w soy milk but rice milk can be requested. Talked to the manager and felt very comfortable with their ingredients and practices.

  • Neomonde Mediterranean Cafe and Market

    4 starsAugust 07, 2014

3817 Beryl Rd, Raleigh, NC 27607

Note: This restaurant is now called Sassool. The owner wanted to honor his mother. So everything is the same...except the name. May not be best business decision but as long as they keep the gf pita and falafel on the menu, I'll be happy! I'm giving them a 4 star rating b/c the food took a very long time (it was not that busy) and then when we got home the meat was a dry. Everything else very flavorful.

  • Melinda's Gluten-Free

    5 starsJuly 27, 2014

    1420 41st Avenue, Capitola, CA 95010

If you are in Capitola, you have to stop by this bakery! They have breakfast and lunch items. Everything is made fresh and is delicious. I can't say enough good things.

  • 7 Sisters Gluten Free

    5 starsJuly 16, 2014

8493 Auburn Blvd, Citrus Heights, CA 95621

This is one of our favorite stops on our way to Tahoe. The food is authentic and delicious. The owner has celiac so she is extremely knowledgable and cautious. She keeps the gf separate. Celiac friendly!!!!

  • Freshies Restaurant & Bar

    5 starsJuly 06, 2014

3330 Lake Tahoe Blvd, South Lake Tahoe, CA 96150

Most everything is gf with a few exceptions; they use a rice flour tempura and all tamari soy sauce. We had fish n chips, fried calamari, and the chicken sesame salad. Excellent quality. Just make sure to say no to the malt vinegar. Most desserts are not gf.

  • Bar of America

    4 starsJuly 05, 2014

10042 Donner Pass Rd, Truckee, CA 96161

It seems like this might be the type of place where the server makes the difference. Our server was very knowledgeable about the menu and guided me with what I should or should not order. I ordered plain burgers for my kids and a chicken salad for me. When the fries arrived for our friends the waiter was quick to point out they were not gf. I did not ask about cc. Food was all very tasty. Fun atmosphere. A bit loud but not bad.

  • Mon Ami Gabi

    5 starsMarch 29, 2014

Paris Resort & Casino, 3655 Las Vegas Blvd. South, Las Vegas, NV 89109

Great gf options. Chef has family member with cd so they are very conscience. I liked the onion soup. Yes bread is Udis. Relaxed atmosphere, attentive waitstaff, good coffee...yes we will be back!

  • Kumi

    4 starsMarch 29, 2014

Mandalay Bay, 3950 S Las Vegas Blvd, Paradise, NV 89119

Delicious sushi (5 stars for that) but not a lot of gf options for the rolls. They have gf tamari. Waitress and sushi chef was knowledgeable. Sushi very very fresh and a cool atmosphere.

  • Il Fornaio

    5 starsMarch 28, 2014

3790 Las Vegas Blvd S, Las Vegas, NV 89109

I'm giving it a 5 because they knew right questions to ask. The menu clearly states gluten free pasta. It takes 20 extra minutes. In assuming that's to boil a new pot of water. We had grilled chicken and a salad with scallops.

  • Picazzo's Organic Italian Kitchen

    5 starsFebruary 22, 2014

    4669 E Cactus Rd, Phoenix, AZ 85032

Unbelievable food and service. 95% of the menu is gluten-free. A must stop for any gluten free diner.

  • Umami Burger

    3 starsDecember 09, 2013

2184 Union St, San Francisco, CA 94123

The food was fairly good but really have to take away a star for their lack of being gluten-free friendly. Brought my kids and husband for dinner; we all eat gluten-free. Had seen the 5 star review so assumed it would be ok. I found there was gluten in the following items: Umami sauce for the burgers (can be omitted) Ketchup (no gf alternative) Fries (not fried in a dedicated fryer) If you come to a place that's known for hamburgers and fries and can't eat any of it because it has gluten, would you still go? I know some restaurants are proud of their craft but in today's world, how hard is it to use gluten-free tamari instead? I was truly disappointed and will likely not go back unless I hear they change to be more gluten-free friendly.

  • Mendocino Farms

    3 starsAugust 19, 2013

4724 Admiralty Way, Marina del Rey, CA 90292

I actually loved the food but although they have a dedicated toaster for the gluten-free bread, they did not know about having a separate station for the sandwiches; my concern is with cc with the sauces and knives. However, after talking to the manager, they seemed open to improving. I'll follow up!

  • Cafe Buna

    4 starsAugust 19, 2013

3105 Washington Blvd, Marina Del Rey, CA 90292

My kids enjoyed the gluten-free pancakes. They are prepared on a dedicated grill which was impressive. The gluten-free toast is not made in a dedicated toaster. We liked everything else (coffee was awesome!) but would agree it's a bit noisy.

  • Sauce On Hampton

    5 starsAugust 19, 2013

259 Hampton Drive, Venice, CA 90291

Love a restaurant where I can take my kids, get great food, and eat safely. Sauce on Hampton was upscale casual with great service and very fresh food. We dined on bacon wrapped shrimp, polenta with mushrooms and a seared sea bass. Waiter was even nice enough to toast some gf bread that we brought. I'll go back if I get down there again!

  • Swingers

    3 starsAugust 19, 2013

802 Broadway, Santa Monica, CA 90401

If you have celiac disease, you might want to skip this. I found out the gluten-free bread is not toasted in a dedicated toasted and that the pancakes are not grilled on a dedicated flat top. The food gets 4 stars but have to give it 3 for not being knowledgeable about gluten-free safety. ps we ate at the Beverly Blvd location.
