Absolutely fresh and wonderful sushi and seafood. Best Japanese (in my opinion, and my husband is Japanese American) in the Monterey area. We come here often. I bring my own tamari and avoid anything with soy sauce, breading, or wheat noodles, and have had no problems. The sushi, sashimi and maki (rolls) are exquisite. They will also substitute brown rice for white in their bento boxes and rolls. Lunch is a bargain, although it can be busy (and usually busy for dinner, too). Busy is good because it means the fish doesn't sit around long. Service is very friendly though servers can be stretched thin at peak times.

    4 starsJanuary 22, 2014

1301 Fremont Blvd, Seaside, CA 93955

I'm a local and I love this place and eat here often. Am highly gluten intolerant (though not celiac) and have never had a problem. Fresh, flavorful variations on the standards ( such as mango salsa or cole slaw garnish) and seafood is sustainable.

  • P.F. Chang's

    3 starsJanuary 22, 2014

1200 Del Monte Center, Monterey, CA 93940

Nice to be able to come here when I need a Chinese food fix, since nearly every other Chinese restaurant is off limits due to pervasive use of soy sauce, wheat noodles and/or cross contamination. For a chain, PF Changs is actually very good.

  • Whole Foods

    4 starsJanuary 22, 2014

800 Del Monte Center, Monterey, CA 93940

I'm local, and just grateful there's a Whole Foods here, as other grocers and Trader Joe's simply lack the variety. I shop here weekly, more for organic and GF ingredients than their prepared items. They do claim the hot foods are prepared with tamari, not soy sauce, but I've not found that to be consistently true. But everything is well labelled so a little careful reading usually does the trick.

Stick with the salads (which are generous and generally quite good) and you should be OK.

110 Central Ave, Pacific Grove, CA 93950

As a local, Il Vecchio is one of my favorite go-to places. Warm, convivial and comfortable, nicely appointed tho not fancy. They seem knowledgeable about gluten and the menu has many GF options. Everything I've tried here has been wonderful - soups, polenta, meats, veggies, desserts. Prices are very moderate and the wine is affordable. Service is attentive and leisurely (i.e., they don't rush you). This place was a hit with locals from the start and lives up to the accolades. Warning: the daily Workers Lunch menu consists of salad and pasta dishes only, and certain evenings are "chefs choice" with no substitutions, so call ahead to be sure the GF menu is available, if you go.

  • Hula's Island Grill and Tiki Room

    3 starsJanuary 22, 2014

622 Lighthouse Ave, Monterey, CA 93940

Service at Hula's has always been attentive and friendly, but in the past I was not that impressed with the food. I recently tried it again (Dec 2013) and found the menu quality much improved. There are not a lot of GF options, but what they have is tasty and well prepared. I had fish tacos which were surprisingly good.

  • Pizza My Way

    4 starsJanuary 22, 2014

1157 Forest Ave, Pacific Grove, CA 93950

Sometimes I just feel like pizza and Pizza My Way delivers (in all senses of the word). Their GF crust is thin and crispy but definitely satisfying. Toppings are plentiful and fresh and include pesto and white sauces vs just tomato. You can build your own but their combos (esp the different veggie) are great. The salads are tasty and generous (try the Greek). Pizza My Way is a bit pricey but to me the service, freshness and quality are worth it once in a while.
