If you're IBS-prone, be aware that they use a LOT of cheese, oil, and butter. Tasty food, yes, but brace for the consequences. For me, it's not worth it anymore, but you might tolerate it better, so give it a try. Just be careful selecting your ingredients.

Outstanding. I drive all the way from Manchester for this. Their berry pancakes and sausage-egg muffins are incredible. It's truly amazing how "normal" their meals taste. My non-celiac friends order off the gluten-free menu now -- it's that good!

I definitely disagree with the other reviewer. I'm highly sensitive and have never had an issue. Their menu is outstanding and more than makes up for the high cost. This is a favorite of my celiac support group. They just give the cross-contamination disclaimer like every other restaurant to cover themselves. They're fine. Also, although it's not on the menu, every sandwich can be made on a gluten-free wrap.

  • Whole Foods

    3 starsJune 02, 2012

50 Raymond Rd, West Hartford, CT 06107

Always a nightmarish mob scene. Gluten-free items are scattered all around. Go to Glastonbury or the other West Hartford location if you don't like tangoing with other customers in every aisle.

340 N. Main St., West Hartford, CT 06117

This is the "old" Whole Foods in town. They carry most of the same stuff as the West Hartford Center/Raymond Road location, with one huge benefit -- virtually no crowd!

  • Trader Joe's

    3 starsJune 02, 2012

1489 New Britain Ave., West Hartford, CT 06110

Not as wide a selection as Whole Foods, but good enough for staples. Their store-line gluten-free English muffins are pretty good. No prepared foods here, so you can't carry out and eat.

Outstanding service, menu, and staff education. But do yourself a favor -- make a reservation! I've been given wait times of over two hours, even on weeknights. Be sure to call ahead for dinner.

They have the most amazing soups! You can do a gluten-free soup/salad combo for under $10. Full list of gluten-free soups at http://www.zoup.com/GlutenFree.aspx Use ZIP Code search before going to find soups of the day, since menu rotates.

Chocolates have a bitter taste due to overuse of agave syrup. Cross-contamination issues for people with nut allergies. Overpriced, even by organic standards. Still, it has a dedicated following, so give it a shot.

  • Treat Cupcake Bar

    3 starsMarch 11, 2012

1450 Highland Ave, Needham, MA 02492

I was pretty disappointed. Cupcake bar only offers a vegan chocolate gluten-free cupcake with dairy-free buttercreme. Neither taste very good. Served with a wooden fork, which makes the cupcake seem even drier. The pre-made gluten-free cupcakes are dried out from sitting in display case. On a positive note, the (miserable) employee demonstrated excellent cross-contamination training. Cute concept, but it just doesn't taste good enough for a second trip.

Decent enough. Gluten-free options are mostly salads and steaks. Pricier than necessary. An okay option.

A personal favorite! Order off the "fussy dieters" menu and/or request cornstarch soy sauce. Staff very knowledgeable and helpful. Popular with local celiac community. Small menu (four main choices), but worth a visit.

A hidden gem in Downtown. Work with staff and you'll be all set. Try the Thai iced tea!

  • Pizzeria Da Vinci

So good! Fantastic coupons on website as well. $2 discount with student ID. All toppings except meatballs are gluten-free.

  • Nature's Grocer

Not a dedicated facility, but they specialize in gluten-free. Tons of baked goods, great cafe, maybe even better than Whole Foods for shopping selection. If you ask, they'll make it or order it.

  • El Mariachi Loco

    4 starsNovember 26, 2011

697 Main St, Manchester, CT 06040

Awesome staff! They're really easy to work with and are very good about reading labels and making suggestions. Ask them when you first go in for gluten-free suggestions and they'll give you a list.

  • The Cosmic Omelet

    4 starsNovember 26, 2011

Very good service and diner/homestyle food. Explain needs and they're happy to accommodate. Request clean grill space for omelettes.

Cross-contamination is really hard to avoid here.

  • Rein's N.Y. Style Deli-Restaurant

    5 starsNovember 26, 2011

435 Hartford Turnpike, Vernon Rockville, CT 06066

An absolute treat, not to be missed. Legendary authentic New York deli, with a long gluten-free menu and probably the best cooking/prep practices I've found outside dedicated facilities. Their pastrami on "rye" will make you forget you ever missed gluten-containing foods.

  • Outback Steakhouse

Great selection, like every other Outback, and very knowledgeable staff.

  • Ninety Nine

Service here isn't always the best and the steak is invariably charred. Vernon location is better.

  • Whole Foods

    4 starsNovember 25, 2011

55 Welles Street, Glastonbury, CT 06033

Much better store than the two in West Hartford. However, do NOT order the gluten-free pizza -- staff openly tell you there's lots of cross-contamination.

  • Red Robin

    4 starsNovember 25, 2011

360 Buckland Hills Drive, Manchester, CT 06040

They sometimes don't have the most recent gluten-free menu printed, so get it off your phone if necessary. Most wait-staff bring you a to-go bag of gluten-free fries before you leave, which is great.

  • CafĂ©mantic

    3 starsNovember 25, 2011

948 Main St, Willimantic, CT 06226

On one hand, the food is good and it's pretty much the only option in Willimantic. On the other hand...$10 for a tiny sandwich?! Their $2.50 surcharge for gluten-free bread is way above what anyone else charges. But again, if you're in the area, this is it. At least it's a tasty rip-off.

  • Family Pizza

    Perfectly average frozen crust pizza.

  • Ninety Nine

Never had any issues at this location. Not as good as Vernon but better than Glastonbury. I always go here when in town.

  • Gina Marie's Family Restaurant

    1 starsNovember 25, 2011

Really bad service and all they offer is 10" frozen crust that doesn't taste very good.

  • Engine 6 Pizza Co.

    5 starsNovember 24, 2011

    195 W Thames St, Norwich, CT 06360

Hands down my favorite gluten-free pizza after Jules Thin Crust outside Philadelphia. Well worth a side trip. They also do amazing gluten-free calzones and other options! I'm in love with them.

  • Ninety Nine

    5 starsNovember 24, 2011

295 Hartford Turnpike, Vernon, CT 06066

Very educated staff. Decent menu size. Service is always good. Regional chain, for those of you passing through on I-84 who might not be familiar. Burgers, steak, chicken, seafood, etc. Really good gluten-free buns!

  • Trumbull Kitchen

    5 starsNovember 24, 2011

Best gluten-free menu in the state. Reservations are a must, but you can sometimes get a table short-notice, so always try.
