• Stuzzi Pizzeria

    1 starsAugust 12, 2015

    1 N Belmont Ave, Richmond, VA 23221

The food is incredibly expensive, the gluten-free pizza really isn't that great, and the kitchen is cross contamination city. Celiacs would be very wise to stay away. Mellow Mushroom is just a few blocks away if you want pizza in Carytown...

  • Nacho Mama's

    2 starsAugust 12, 2015

3449 West Cary Street, Richmond, VA 23221

EDIT 8/12/15: Crash and burn. Previously, Nacho Mama's had a fairly extensive gluten-free menu and fried their chips in a dedicated fryer. Well, now, for unknown reasons they've done away with their gluten-free menu and, as a result, the precautions they used to take. The food is still fairly okay and I haven't gotten sick here yet, and I may still eat here every now and then unless they change more things (though the most recent review is pretty scary), but it may just be pure dumb luck that I haven't gotten sick. If you're really sensitive, steer clear. Very disappointing.

  • Shelly's Food

    5 starsJune 24, 2015

7304 Staples Mill Road, Henrico, VA 23228

Sometimes you stumble across a mom-and-pop place that truly surprises you. This place has some of the best *authentic* Latin food I have ever had. Shelly is very knowledgeable about gluten-free diets, and she makes EVERYTHING fresh in-house, right down to the refried beans (she even grinds the beans!). Practically everything on the menu is naturally gluten-free or can be made that way. The staff is friendly and the food is great.

  • Red Robin

    3 starsFebruary 19, 2015

10067 Brook Rd., Glen Allen, VA 23059

Food is stellar with lots of options. Dedicated fryers mean bottomless fries! EDIT 2/19/15: I have to take two stars off, however. Yes, the food is great and yes, there are a lot (*A LOT*) of options. However, be sure your server absolutely knows what your order is when you order it. Every time I have been to this location since I left my previous review in July 2014, they've gotten my order wrong. While I was never in a situation of being served a gluten-containing item instead of the gluten-free version, you really have to be careful.

  • O'Charley's

    3 starsFebruary 19, 2015

9927 Mayland Dr, Henrico, VA 23233

Haven't gotten sick here. The food is pretty good if you don't fill up on strawberry lemonades like I do. Still, not many options although staff are knowledgeable.

  • Urban Farmhouse

    3 starsFebruary 19, 2015

    1217 E Cary St, Richmond, VA 23219

Great food (with bread and cookies from AnnaB's Gluten Free!) but I can't call this place celiac friendly because all items are made in a common kitchen and CC is a major problem - I once ordered a box lunch and there was flour all over the box when I went to pick it up (they did remake the sandwich, though).

  • Sweetopia

This business appears to be closed as of 2/18/15.

  • Pie Five Pizza Co.

    4 starsFebruary 19, 2015

10921 W Broad St, Glen Allen, VA 23060

Okay, so the pizzas are okay for what they are - they use Smart Flour crusts (same as Mellow Mushroom but smaller), and most of the toppings are gluten-free (meatballs aren't GF). However, I can't recommend this place for anyone on a strict gluten-free diet (i.e. celiacs) because there's so much cross-contamination potential with the other crusts stored in the same area as the GF ones. If you're not a celiac and can deal with some CC risk, then Pie Five is very, very convenient. Personally, I haven't gotten sick here. I can't say it's 100% celiac friendly, though.

  • Sal's Pizza

    5 starsDecember 26, 2014

    5752 3 Notch'd Rd, Crozet, VA 22932

The gluten-free pizza here is excellent and the staff are knowledgeable about cross contamination, and unlike many gluten-free pizzas, it doesn't hit you too hard in the wallet! Definitely a pleasant surprise in a great area of Virginia.

  • Cheese Roll Bake Shop

    5 starsDecember 24, 2014

8911 Patterson Avenue, Richmond, VA 23229

Seriously, you've got to try these. Delicious Brazilian cheese rolls that come in many different flavors and varieties and all are 100% gluten-free! The menu is limited to cheese rolls and flan (which is also gluten-free), but everything is fresh, delicious, and very inexpensive! Be sure to stop by early, though, because the popular varieties tend to run out quickly!

  • Waveriders Coffee & Deli

    5 starsDecember 23, 2014

3022 South Croatan Highway, Nags Head, NC 27959

Edited 12/23/14 to fix a minor error, oops. Excellent sandwich place that I'm surprised hasn't shown up on this website until now. They use Boar's Head meat, which is gluten-free, and have gluten-free bread and bagels! You can even get your sandwiches toasted on a panini press (which is not dedicated, but they DO thoroughly clean and sanitize it to eliminate cross contamination), and they're so fabulous that I wanted to eat practically all my meals here while on vacation! They also carry pastries from Be Free Bakery. A little on the pricey side but worth every penny.

  • Sugar Creek Seafood Restaurant

    4 starsAugust 22, 2014

7340 S Virginia Dare Trail, Nags Head, NC 27959

Staff is knowledgeable and the food is great, although a bit on the pricey side. You get what you pay for, though, and that's pretty sizeable portions of freshly made fish.

  • Barefoot Bernie's Tropical Grill & Bar

    5 starsAugust 14, 2014

3730 North Croatan Highway, Kitty Hawk, NC 27949

The food is worth the wait. Lots of options and excellent ones at that, and the staff knows their stuff when it comes to gluten-free.

  • Tio Pablo

    5 starsJuly 19, 2014

1703 East Franklin Street, Richmond, VA 23223

Everything is gluten-free, and the food is incredible. Try the gorditas, made with fresh corn masa!

  • Mellow Mushroom

    5 starsJuly 19, 2014

    3012 W Cary St, Richmond, VA 23221

Most excellent pizzas made in a dedicated area, and most toppings are gluten-free.

  • Five Guys

    5 starsJuly 19, 2014

10841 West Broad St., Henrico, VA 23233

The staff are trained to avoid cross contamination, and everything except bread and malt vinegar are gluten-free. Go nuts!

  • Glory Days Grill

    5 starsJune 02, 2014

10466 Ridgefield Pkwy, Henrico, VA 23233

Sometimes I want a burger, and I don't necessarily want Five Guys. When I want a big burger, this is where I go. Excellent burgers on gluten-free buns, with fries from a dedicated fryer! You can even get certain items from the regular menu made gluten-free: for instance, you can get a MOUNTAIN of cheese fries (just ask for no onions). I miss being able to have really good cheese fries like what Outback Steakhouse has, and Glory Days makes that possible. They also have excellent GF wings and a few other entrees. The staff is very knowledgeable and I've never had a bad experience here.

  • California Pizza Kitchen

    4 starsJune 02, 2014

    11800 W. Broad Street, #1104, Richmond, VA 23233

The first incarnation of California Pizza Kitchen's gluten-free pizza tasted awful and made me horribly sick. This time around, they've done everything right, and the pizzas are not only made properly, but they are downright tasty. The BBQ chicken pizza is definitely one of my favorites!

  • Pearl's Cupcake Shoppe

    5 starsFebruary 25, 2014

5812 Grove Ave, Richmond, VA 23226

Tons of gluten-free options. Cupcakes, cookies, cake pops, macaroons, brownies, special order cakes, the list goes on. The gluten free cupcakes are very moist and very flavorful, and they rotate flavors daily!

  • Bottom's Up Pizza

    3 starsJanuary 09, 2014

1700 Dock St, Richmond, VA 23223

The gluten free pizza itself isn't really all that great. However, there are other options here: the salads are pretty good, but what shines most for me is the portabella mushroom cap pizzas. I could eat those all day. The only downside is they're rather expensive, but so is everything else.
