Avenue Review The decor inside of the restaurant is beautiful. It has a Manhattan style theme to it. We met one of the co-owners (Maria) who indicated that she eats gluten-free (GF). Almost every item on the menu is GF or can be made as such except or a few items which are denoted with an asterisk. Our server Kara was extremely friendly and attentive. She had a great knowledge of the menu and the GF aspects of it. I had the Avenue salad - poached pears, candied pecans, mixed green & crumbled blue cheese with a red wine vinaigrette dressing. For dinner, I ordered the Tuna Oscar and my wife had the gluten-free Basil Cream pasta with chicken based on a prior reviewer's recommendation. Both of our dishes can be summed up with one word...amazing!! The tuna was fresh and savory. It was topped with crab meat that was seasoned beautifully and the shoestring potatoes were so good that my wife couldn't resist continuing to reach onto my plate and steal them. Her GF pasta was fantastic. The cream sauce was light and flavorful and the pasta itself was tasty. We finished the meal by ordering their GF creme brûlée. It was a little heavier than traditional creme brûlée, but tasted exactly the same. I would highly recommend the restaurant and every dish I referenced in this review to everyone...not just those with a gluten allergy.

We went there this AM for a bagel for my son who has CD. They had plain flavored bagels and bread that were GF. My son ordered a pizza bagel (based on a prior reviewer's comment) and loved it. The girl preparing it announced that it would take a few mins longer because "I have to change my gloves and wash the utensils." I was happy that she both acknowledged her understanding of cross contamination and managed our time expectations. The cost of the bagel was just shy of $5. My son loved it and was excited to go back again. My only negative is the location. It is basically just outside of the OBX so depending on where you're staying it may be a long drive.

The menu is clearly marked with "GF" icons to denote all of the gluten-free options. The manager and wait staff were both aware and attentive to our needs pertaining to our party member who has Celiac. They also offered that they do not use a dedicated fryer for French fries so those were not an option for our diner with CD. My rating of 2 stars is based on the quality of food. There are many seafood options as well as a good sampling of items for those who aren't seafood lovers. I was in a party of 10 and the general assessment of the food from all of the adult diners was that this is a restaurant that can be skipped. The only positive among the diners in our party was the steak. It was tasty, juicy an seasoned well. The same cannot be said for the vegetarian dish, the chicken, the ribs, or the broiled flounder.

  • Life Saving Station Restaurant

Went here the day after dining at the Blue Point. The Life Saving Station was far superior to the Blue Point restaurant in every way. The waiter (Bryan) was awesome. He was very knowledgeable and checked with the chef on all questions we had if he wasn't able to answer straight away. Almost every item on the children's menu can be made gluten free and the same goes for the main menu. Gluten free rolls came right out of the oven and were delish! Our son who suffers from Celiac Disease ordered gluten free chicken fingers with a side of GF Mac & Cheese. He ate until he was stuffed...but still was able to have one of their several GF dessert offerings. The entire wait staff was friendly and helpful. The food was amazing. My only complaint is that we didn't come here earlier on our vacation! We will come back here next year for sure. I recommend any families with a CD diner do the same.

My rating is entirely based on how gluten-friendly this restaurant is. We called to make a reservation and announced that we had a child with CD when doing so. When checking in upon arrival, the hostess confirmed without solicitation that we had a CD diner in our party and seated us. Upon arrival of the waitress, we were informed that the only item on the menu that our 8 year old son who has CD can have is grilled chicken plus various vegetables. We were also told that there is no children's menu so our 3 year old was offered pasta with chicken. No children's menu equals not kid friendly in my book. We also had a vegetarian in our party who was offered "a vegetable plate." When we asked the waitress to specify what vegetables came on the plate she vaguely announced "whatever is available, but if you tell me what you don't like I'll make sure it's not included." As for the food: the menu is 6 pages (including front and back cover). There are 3 pages for alcohol, and 1 each for food, desserts, and the restaurant's name. I was in a party of 10 so we had a good variety of the menu's offerings. The food was very good, but overpriced. The mac & cheese which they seem to make a big deal about at the restaurant was universally rated as "good, but dry" by the diners in our party. That being said, everyone in our party enjoyed our meals (I had the pork chop) including my son who had grilled chicken w/steamed rice. However, we went here because we saw it on Find Me GF. IMO, this restaurant is no more accommodating to Celiacs than a McDonalds or Burger King.

  • Salt Creek Grille

Love this place! Have been going there even before they identified each and every item on their menus that are GF. There is no shortage of choices of GF meals. They could have a better selection of GF desserts though (currently only have 3 different flavors of sherbet), which is the only reason I gave them 4 stars. Great atmosphere and great food. Staff is super friendly and sensitive to any allergy.

The food is good here if you do not suffer from CD. Unfortunately if you do, be aware that they cross contaminate the pizzas. They use the same ladle to make gluten free pizzas that they do to make their regular pies. This discovery came as a disappointment to us as our son who suffers from CD liked their brownie dessert.
