Aloha, AO Hawaiian Hideout is located in South Loop Chicago, serving homestyle comfort foods from East Asia, Southeast Asia & Polynesia. ALL GF items are clearly marked on our menu, as well as 3rd party platforms. The menu is broken down into separate sections:
1) Teasers
2) "Souper" Noodle Bowls
3) Poké Bowls
4) Sushi
5) Island Favs
6) Popular Asian Cuisines
7) Fried Rice
8) Noodles
9) Vegan/GF menu
Just a friendly note, everyone MUST INDICATE GF soy sauce when ordering ALL sushi orders. I indicate GF on specific sushi items, as the actual ingredients inside the sushi roll are ALL GF. We do NOT automatically pack/serve GF soy sauce. YOU MUST REQUEST GF SOY SAUCE for ALL SUSHI ORDERS.
We have several repeat customers who have celiac disease and have never had any issues with our GF menu items. I combined most of our GF items with our Vegan menu, to ensure that the stir-fry wok section does not mistaken our Signature House Sauce with GF orders.
Specific List that is GF
thin rice noodles | wide rice noodles | non-deep fried/battered foods
Specific Sauces/Broth that are GF
Panang | Indonesian | Nutty Noodles | Asian Sesame Dressing | Tonkotsu | Vegan Ramen Broth
Here is an example, where my sauce/broth is GF, BUT the noodles are not. Indonesian Mie Goreng, replace spaghetti-like noodles with either thin rice noodles or wide rice noodles which is GF. When in doubt, always ask to speak w Betty.
My family and I visited while on a trip to Chicago and had a great experience. I have Celiac and they were knowledgeable and had several options marked on the menu. I am always a little afraid I will get glutened when I eat out, but they even had tamari available and were sure to let know items that other members of my party ordered were unsafe. I was hopeful there would be more traditional Hawaiian dishes I could enjoy, but the Vietnamese dish I had was very good. The menu was extensive and encompassed many various foods you encounter in Hawaii. My kids especially loved their sushi and hubby said the pork belly tacos were delicious. It was a fun throwback to some he had on our honeymoon on Oahu. The portion sizes were large, presentation was lovely, and prices were reasonable. The food and ambiance, coupled with friendliness of the staff make this an awesome little gem. As a bonus it was a short walk from popular hotels families stay at for museum trips and the metro was nearby. We will definitely visit next time we are up!
Great food, very aware of gluten allergies and went above and beyond to make me feel comfortable
I was a bit skeptical, but was really happy we ended up having coming here. I loved everything about my experience. The menu clearly states what is GF and I double checked with our server as I have severe reactions to gluten...had lots to take home for leftovers!!! I started w a couple of sushi rolls, but make sure to ask your server for GF soy sauce. Then for dinner, I ordered Panang curry, Nasi Goreng fried rice and Pad Thai.
The owner even stopped by to make sure everything was ok and she assured me that they have many repeat customers with celiac disease and they have never had any issues with their orders. This is definitely my new favorite restaurant and I have told all my GF friends they have got to try this place out.
I was the only one on my group who ordered from the GF menu. I had the curry and nasi goreng, both were absolutely delish!!! Would definitely come back.
Look, I am SUPER sad to be reviewing this poorly because it was super cute and service was great and the food was delicious and the live music was lovely. I ordered an item marked as GF and also flagged it with the server and specified that I am celiac. But I got glutened BAD and spent my afternoon throwing up at an art museum, which is nobody's idea of a good time.
Thank you for sharing, however, it would be very helpful to find out your exact order, as we use this tool to help fine tune our operations. I have many repeat customers who have celiac disease and have NEVER had any issues with their orders. ALL GF items are clearly marked on our menu.
Walked in for the first time. The decor is pretty cool and the food was even better. Ordered sushi and malaysian deluxe noodle soup. Really good, never had anything like this.
My sister told me about this place, I can have some gluten, but prefer not to. Love the decor and will definitely be back w my family. Just had the pad thai, really good.
Ordered from here for the first time. Was really happy, the Panang chicken, shrimp pad Thai and beef Nasi Goreng were all amazing. Will definitely be back.
Well, let's just say I don't eat out alot, cuz I have severe allergies and reactions to food. I was really reluctant, but because the staff was very knowledgeable and assured me that I would not have any problems w my order, I gave it a go. Omg, fell in love w my first bite of the panang, then the Nasi Goreng, a couple of sushi rolls. I live out in the burbs, but when we come into the city, this will be my go to restaurant!!!
Found this place through friends. My wife is celiac and does not trust many Asian places. Ordered the panang, some sushi rolls (gotta tell them you need GF soy sauce) and the red sauce fried rice...the bomb!!!
First time ordering, the Panang Chicken is spool good. I also had a few bites of my bf's pad Thai. He wouldn't give me anymore.
Happy that many sushi rolls can be prepared gluten free
Just moved into the neighborhood, very pleased w my meal. Panang Chicken and Pad Thai were amazing.
Loved every bite. My daughter has celiac and it clearly indicates what is gluten friendly and what is not.
I have celiac and order from Asian Outpost Hawaiian Hideout every week. I have never had any issues, as ALL items that indicate GF I stick with. There was this one time, that I wanted Mongolian Chicken and asked if they can prepare it GF, they were able to accommodate as it was not busy at the time.
They have an entire section dedicated to mostly GF items.
a wide variety of options
This is worth noting for any hermits who want to dine in the comfort of their own home. I've ordered from Asian Outpost several times (and everything's generally pretty tasty for their having a pan-Asian menu), but this was a bit of a bummer.
Friday night, I was looking to get some takeout for my sister and BIL (who has celiac) who were visiting from Cincinnati before we hit the town for the evening. I was feeling pretty sanguine about our chances, given the good reviews, and we put in an order for pad thai using their online ordering system, taking additional care to note on the item and on the order that the dish was intended for someone with celiac and asking them to be careful.
Unluckily for him (or half-luckily for him and the rest of us), his half-hour waiting period had elapsed as soon as we'd pulled out of our parking garage and he bailed to take care of business, never to return. The rest of our party would go on to complete an escape room, and he was fortunate enough to escape the bathroom and pass out on the bed for the rest of the night. My sister and husband stopped razzing me about trying to kill him after an incident-free brunch the next morning, but I'm still feeling guilty.
Hate to give this a complete thumbs-down for celiac-friendly, but so it goes. You're probably in good hands when having dinner on-site, but I would proceed with caution where it comes to delivery and pick-up orders. Or at least try to phone them in, since I couldn't say that the order notes get read.
Wonderful food, friendly staff. The manager was so concerned about making sure we enjoyed our meal and had enjoyed the selection of gluten friendly food. The food was delicious - some of the best I've ever had. The manager was also so kind in giving us a complimentary mango dessert that she made specifically for people with celiac. Will definitely come back if I'm in the area again
Delicious! Gluten friendly items clearly marked on menu. (Not sure if it’s 100% celiac friendly, but was great for me who is gluten Intolerant). I had the Cantonese Vegan Kow (But i added chicken- has a yummy sauce with mixed veggies). I went back two days later to have fried rice & the Thai Panang curry. Yum! Reasonably priced as well. AND they deliver!
They have a separate GF menu & knowledgeable staff. The miso soup, lettuce wrap & pad see ewe as well as my husband's glutinous dish were very good & filling.
The food at Asian Outpost was delicious! One of the best meals we had when we visited Chicago. Unique options with lots to choose from. The menu has clearly marked GF items, and the waitress was also very knowledgeable about the menu as well. She brought us a bottle of GF soy sauce, which was a treat for us since no restaurants where we live have GF soy sauce.
I 100% recommend this restaurant!
Visiting Chicago and went out to dinner with friends. Asian Outpost recently opened and the owner Lois was amazing! She walked me through the menu which has identified GF items. She even altered menu options to make sure they were GF and dairy free. I will definitely return to Asian Outpost on my next visit to Chicago!
