Hi, I am Wendy, owner of Beach Roundabout Takeaways (formerly Roundabout Takeaways) Whangamata. I just wanted to advise that the Batter I use on my fish is sourced from a reputable Gluten Free Supplier in Auckland and all GF fish and chips are cooked in a separate GF only Fryer. Whilst I sell GF food I do not under any circumstances advertise as 100% GF. We do our utmost to ensure our food is not contaminated but we are also cooking and using products that contain gluten in other areas of our kitchen so cross contamination can occur. If you have any queries about our GF menu or preparation areas, please do not hesitate to contact me. Details can be found on my website www.beachroundabout.co.nz

The staff was knowledgeable about cross contamination, and had a separate area for gluten free, which you could clearly see marked from the counter. I used my Nima sensor, which came back as gf for the chips, and gluten found for the fish. Since the fryers (two gf) are dedicated my guess is the batter for the fish isn’t actually gf. The chips were safe though!

Owner Response

Hi Anne. The batter I use on my gluten free fish is sourced from a reputable GF supplier in Auckland and your "guess" that it is not GF is incorrect. My GF station is separate from the rest of my takeaway shop but at no stage do I advertise my shop and food as 100% GF as there are too many other products cooked in store that do contain Gluten and the Disclaimer on my website states the following: Disclaimer: While we offer gluten-free menu options, we are not a certified gluten-free kitchen. Whilst all care is taken, cross-contamination could occur and we are unable to guarantee that any item can be completely free of allergens. Customers are encouraged to consider this information in light of their individual requirements.

If you are a Celiac then my GF is really not suitable. If you are just cutting out Gluten to the best of your ability, then my takeaways are suitable. To anyone wanting GF Fish and Chips, please ask if batter is GF before placing feedback on social media that is incorrect and can be damaging to small businesses particularly during these very trying times. Kindest regards and thank you. Wendy Murcott, Owner, Beach Roundabout Takeaways, Whangamata.

Fantastic fish and chip shop - light, fresh and not greasy. Dedicated GF station and fully aware of ingredients and cross contamination. Serves fish, chips, potato fritters, burgers, hot dogs, pineapple fritters ... and menu continues to evolve. Highly recommend.

Thank you Janine. My GF station is a work in progress and something I am pondering whether to keep going with or not. Your kind words are much appreciated.

Kind regards
