I was able to eat here safely, but the food was really nothing to write home about, and staff was not attentive and seemed to want us gone even though it wasn’t near closing at all. Plenty of better options in Chicago.
GF items marked on the menu. Not that many, but enough to make a choice. Tasty German food, of course, with well informed severs. GF beer and cider.
TL; DR. Got sick, but not glutened sick
Visiting Chicago for business and staying in The Loop, I was worried I wouldn’t have GF options within walking distance. This one looked touristy, but had some good looking salads and also sausage, if I decided to go that route. However once there, the service was extremely lacking (forgot to put sauce on side, never got a refill on house made root beer, couldn’t flag him down for the bill, etc) The salad and grilled shrimp I had made me pretty sick in the night and the next day- not the kind of sick that I get from gluten, but something was definitely off in the kitchen that night. Will not go back.

Menu marked as gluten free sensitive. I told the server and she confirmed my order would be gluten free. Got the three sausage trio with kraut. Was delicious. Got the diet root beer made in house and was great. Was a great meal.
Had the sausage trio and flourless chocolate cake. All GF and had no issues after
Had a delicious chicken salad. Wait staff was excellent and extremely knowledgeable. When in doubt they checked! Gluten free beer and cider for those interested. I enjoyed a root beer. Portions are huge so come hungry.
This was very celiac friendly. Told the waitress our daughter was very sensitive and they were very accommodating. It was so nice to actually eat at a restaurant. She loved her dinner and even got dessert. She didn’t get sick!
Although not a separate gluten-free menu, the gluten-free options are clearly marked on the menu and the waiter was very knowledgeable. We had excellent gluten-free beer, appetizers, entree, and dessert!
I’ve heard the family has several family members with celiac so they take it very seriously. I’ve eaten here several times now with an issue. Love the bacon wrapped shrimp and sausage trio.
I mean, if you are downtown and have celiac- there are slim choices. I just find German food sort of meh on the scale of personal taste. The place has history and you can get in short notice. So I will head here if I’m with out of towners and we need to eat out. I think if one enjoyed German fare it might be a delight. But for me, it’s about enjoying other people and getting to eat out. Been multiple times.
Great experience - waiter very knowledgeable when asking about prep area. They have a whole separate area and frier .
Excellent deconstructed chicken cordon blue was excellent. The shrimp appetizer was excellent as well. I was too full to try dessert but they had cheesecake and chocolate cake
Only a handful of GF options, but so delicious. GF cocktails, cider, and Glutenberg beer available.

Delicious Everything was labelled, actually I did not feel I had to mention being celiac.

Menu is clearly labeled and waitstaff are knowledgeable. Waitress made sure my companions food (also labeled GF) was treated carefully as mine in case we wanted to share (her suggestion!). I had the cedar plank salmon and salted caramel cheesecake- I’m super sensitive and had no issues.
A group of us went to eat at this quaint old time restaurant. The food was very good and they had several items on their menu that were gluten free.
Very knowledgeable about Celiacs and their options-like to the point it was a little too nervous because it was so easy, haha! But nothing to fear, it was delicious and I did not get glutened. The Sauerbraten and sausage plate were both outstanding, as was the root beer. Service and ambiance were great, as well.

Decent German food! Very old restaurant with lots of history. There are a few gluten free options marked right on the menu. All staff are knowledgeable and friendly about Celiac's and GF allergies. The flourless chocolate cake at the end was my favorite part!

Everything we ordered was listed as gluten free, but within an hour, I was sick and spent the evening in bed.
Excellent! The food was exceptional. The staff wrote down that we needed gluten free. They had ton of options! So much so that my husband ordered a second gluten free entree so I could try his. We had bacon wrapped shrimp with polenta for an appetizer and they had two options for gluten free desserts! I got the caramel cheesecake! I would highly recommend. So impressed. I will definitely be back.

We went for lunch. Totally took care of the celiac in group. She had the roasted chicken and loved it. The others had the goat cheese salad and the beet salad; both good.
So three meals and no one was glutened, but the food was 'uninspired'. Yes it's an institution, worth a visit, but the foods nothing to write home about (except to say it was safe!).
I had the sauerbraten and it was delicious. The gravy is a bit sweet and the potatoes are a bit bland, but add a little salt and its pretty tastey.
The bacon wrapped shrimp was amazing. Everything tasted good. On the menu it said something along the lines of their kitchen is certified by beyond celiac in preventing cross contamination. Everything tasted good and I had no reactions.
Tried it after speaking to the restaurant via email, reading reviews and discussing at length with waitress. Had the scallops, the zucchini noodles and the bacon wrapped shrimp. Wonderful food but was sick the next day..
Didn't wind up eating there. There was no gluten free beer and no gluten free options on the happy hour menu. The service was very slow and couldn't really answer any questions so we decided to move on and eat somewhere else after the first round of drinks.

Had the penne with vodka sauce, didn't have much flavor. Mom gave me her mushrooms from the gf chicken which helped. gf salted Carmel cheesecake is delicious! Thank you! Why can't Cheesecake Factory do that??? Mom didn't lik the texture of what she expected to be mashed potatoes, rice? Ice tea was very good. So was my son's ice cream.
Sauerbraten was excellent. GF Carmel cheesecake was so good!! Lots of GF options to choose from. I'm a celiac and did not get sick. Highly recommend the Berghoff.
