I stop at Billy’s every time I pass through Ashland. The food is shockingly delicious. Since being diagnosed with Celiac I take every chance I get with wings and fries when safe. They have a dedicated fryer and almost everything on the menu is gluten free (wide selection beyond just wings and fries). All of it is delicious. Great service, too! I rarely write reviews of any sort, but this place is well worth your visit!
After reading the reviews, I had to stop in for fish & chips.
Fantastic flavor — i would say they taste like “normal” ones but what do i know about normal anymore? Everything GF is clearly marked and the bartender was plenty familiar with it, if not GF themselves, in my quick discussion. And oh, big portions for the money too.
I’ve been coming to Billy’s for a little over a year. And recently they’ve expanded their menu. And in doing so I feel like things are becoming a little less celiac safe.
It use to be that the only gluten item on their menu was biscuits. Now it’s buns, biscuits and several of their happy hour items such as the tiger roll for example aren’t gluten free. And the staff also seem confused about what is and isn’t gluten free in regards specifically to their happy hour menu.
I’m hoping this is just a transitional adjustment as they recently switched to a more sports bar theme, with a menu update. Their fried chicken is still the same, with the addition of more kinds- still gluten free and in a dedicated fryer. And their entrees are gluten free minus the new sliders and burgers they sometimes offer.
However, they do seem to be moving in a direction of offering more and more gluten containing fare. And you definitely have to request a note on your order now about things being gluten free (that wasn’t always the case, they just use to).
Billy’s is still a great place to get gluten free chicken, one of my favourite Southern Oregon restaurants for gluten free food. But if you have celiac just keep in mind it is becoming less safe than it used to be. As is Thai Pepper, a restaurant in the same building, owned by the same people.
It was nice to be able to get gf fried chicken and gf fish and chips.
That being said, not so sure about some of the flavor combinations for their chicken and sauces, and the truffle fries were a bit intense for my liking. But I would come here again! (And maybe ask for no truffle on fries and go for the basic popcorn chicken)
Most of the menu is gluten free besides their buns, and biscuits but the chicken and fried items are in a gluten free frier that’s celiac safe and if you tell them they take extra precautions even wrote a note for my order. You can order multiple types of chicken and sides!
This is my favorite restaurant! It’s hard to satisfy a fried chicken craving with celiac’s disease but Billy’s fried chicken is the answer. You would never be able to tell it’s gluten free by the taste and texture.
I’ve had their food twice and so far haven’t had any issues with gluten contamination. They are not a dedicated gluten free facility but they only have one single item with gluten (the sandwich buns) and the staff are careful about keeping this separate from everything else and preventing cross contamination. Their truffle fries are really good (like so goddamn good), the sauce is phenomenal, and the fried chicken is just as crispy and way tastier than kfc -with the added bonus that I don’t feel sick after eating at Billy’s.
My personal go to is their popcorn chicken, but I also really recommend the Japanese fried chicken. It’s kind of like fried teriyaki chicken and it is mouth watering.
They have entrees for as low as $12 which is simultaneously the cheapest and highest quality gluten free meal in the rogue valley.
I am overjoyed to have an option for food that is tasty and celiac safe that I don’t have to cook myself, and that I can take friends to without feeling like they’re sacrificing tastiness of gluten centric kitchens to include me in an evening out. Billy’s is the best and you’re missing out if you don’t try it.
Some of the best fried chicken I’ve ever had, even before celiac! The buttermilk pieces had crunchy skin and the meat was delicious! The fries were also good, and I could eat them! The staff is knowledgeable and ridiculously friendly (they brought me a cup of ice cream when they found out my birthday is coming up in a few days).
The chicken was so good that I ordered a half a bird to bring back home to Minneapolis tomorrow! Can’t recommend this place strongly enough!
Best GF fried chicken ever!! Not heavy or greasy. Nice friendly staff.
