I dined with my family here in December 2019 and was very disappointed. I called ahead, alerted our server, and was assured in both instances that there is a dedicated fryer. While ordering, I was met with rudeness, confusion from our server on several instances.
After speaking with the manager on duty and a follow up email with the owners, I was told they do not have a dedicated fryer, but rather heat up oil separately in a pan to cook gf fries. A totally fine practice - but not well-communicated by host and wait staff.
I would definitely ALWAYS recommend looping management upon your ARRIVAL here to ensure you have a safe meal. The management is awesome, as are many Celiac/gf reviews here. I hope I can return to give it 5 stars. It’s a great menu and a great atmosphere! My dining experience just did not at all reflect the great reviews here, and I spent every minute advocating for my health.
Answered all our questions and we're willing to modify dishes to be gluten free. Much of the menu is gluten-free, and they offer gluten-free buns and pasta for an extra charge.
Fantastic experience. Emailed ahead of time and they suggested letting them know when I made a reservation that I had Celiac. That way everyone knew I had Celiac before I walked in the door. Staff were very knowledgeable and supportive. Food was great, it was a really fun experience, and I didn't get sick.
Yes
Speak to management when you arrive, so they can work with your server and kitchen staff.
I got the poutine and had no issues. Delicious!!!!!
DO NOT EAT HERE IF YOU ARE CELIAC!!! Staff claims to be knowledgeable about gluten & cross contamination. But every time I’ve used my NIMA sensor, it’s shown up positive for gluten! The staff didn’t even try to correct the problem...instead the waitress brought me a to-go cup of olives when I showed her the Gluten positive tests. What the heck? Still paid for our entire meal. Called the manager after leaving, because we couldn’t even get the waitress back to our table after she dropped the check.
In conclusion, this place smells delish & is always super busy. So their food is probably amazing. Too bad they don’t cater to any level of gluten-free friendliness. The bummer is that they claim VERY fervently that they are able to make certain things GF. They’re nice as people. But DANGEROUSLY uneducated about gluten & too busy to care to train their staff properly. (Even my salad was glutened. Check NIMA’s reviews page for pics of my positive gluten tests at Bird & Jim’s)
