Al a carte fresh fish menu. Fish and sides are cooked in olive oil.
The app sashimi tuna was on the “wheat free” menu and is NOT safe. It’s marinated in soy sauce. Honestly I didn’t really like my meal- cod with sautéed carrots and spaghetti squash. The food was really oily but kind of tasteless. They forgot my salsa for the fish and then only gave me a small scoop when I asked for it. But as far as safety, what I ate was gluten free so they did a good with that. Won’t be going back though, food was mediocre
Food is decent. Waitstaff was very understanding and kind. I had the cioppino as recommended by another review, with squash on the side instead of bread. A little salty but safe! Enjoy :-)
Had tuna sashimi. Waiter explained what was gluten free, but did not double check and seemed uncertain. Meal came with soy sauce-esque sauce, but drizzle did not touch tuna. He was certain that fish of the day and shrimp and grits was gluten free. Did not indicate celiac friendly practices.
My server, Rafael, was super helpful from the get go. He recommended what he thought would be best for me and took extra steps to make sure the cooks would be careful with my meal. I got the shrimp skewers with double veggies. Super yummy and an amazing view to go along with it!
Sat at the bar and was very disappointed. Bartender gave wrong information about what was gluten free and did not seem to care. Will never go back. They only seem to care about their regulars.
They were very attentive to my dietary needs. The only issue was the bus boy brought bread to our table 3 times before remembering that we couldn't eat bread (hence the 4 verses 5 stars). They don't have a separate prep area, but only fish with a little olive oil, salt, & pepper go on their grill. The server & kitchen staff seemed highly knowledgeable about cross-contamination, so it was relatively safe. I got the cioppino, which was fabulous! They gave me grilled summer squash instead of the toasted bread at no extra charge, which I thought was very nice. My boyfriend got the grilled halibut with coleslaw & potatoes. All of it was delicious. All in all we had a great experience & I didn't get sick, so I'd definitely go back when I visit Avalon again.
Our waitress understood the seriousness of celiac disease and showed me what part of the menu to order from, essentially just the daily fish and a couple of salads. One of the previous waitresses there had celiac disease so some of the staff got to learn from her what was ok and what wasn't. However, later in the meal she offered me oyster crackers so she either forgot or doesn't know what's in oyster crackers. I got the crab salad and it was delicious and I didn't get sick.
My wife and I enjoyed the delicious Ciopino and swordfish. Our waitress was very knowledgable when it came to identifying what was gluten free on the menu and if it was questionable, checked with the chef. Although they don't have a gluten free menu, we were informed that many of their dishes could be made gluten free upon request.
Went to dinner here recently for the first time. Was happy to see they offer a "wheatless" menu. However, the server was one of the least informed of any I have encountered. I asked which side dishes were gluten free and he replied that the vegetables were. I inquired about if the potato based sides were as well (mashed potatoes, potato chips) and he said "well I guess not because they're starches..." With a questioning voice. When I informed him not all starches contain gluten he seemed very surprised. He then went to ask the chef and came back to report that the chef didn't know if these dishes were gluten free! Very alarming and less than reassuring experience, especially at an establishment that has made the effort to offer a wheat-free menu. Will not be returning.
This restaurant was awesome. Even though they didn't have a specific gluten free menu. Our waitress was very knowledgable. She had a list from the chef of what is gluten free on the menu. There was tons of options to choose from even a delicious desert. I will definitely recommend giving it a try.
Lots of oysters, fresh fish, Cioppino, sushi, steamed shellfish, chicken entrees, gluten free sides and creme brulee. happy hour includes wings that can be only baked, tacos made with corn tortillas, artichokes, etc. Very accommodating. Salad was fresh and cold!
