Knowledgeable and had many many options
The chicken fajita is delicious and I have been here many times with never any issue.
I had a similar situation where the first time I went after being diagnosed, the waitress seemed to understand the severity of celiac disease and cross contamination. I was totally fine. The next time I went I had ordered fajitas with corn tortillas. I always say that I have celiac disease and ask if it’s safe. I had questioned if they were actually corn and not flour and I was just told “yep”. As I was half way through my meal and eating the side with sour cream, guacamole, and lettuce, there were French fries at the bottom of the plate. First of all, that’s just gross because how am I supposed to know if it’s old or accidentally fell on the plate. I had asked if they had a dedicated fryer which they don’t. So the manager came over and basically said the kitchen is not safe, it’s not always cleaned or separated for this allergy. I was out with my fiancée and they only comped my meal which we had to promptly leave as I knew I was going to get sick.
Our family had our travel plans bumped and we found Border Cafe for a meal. I have to eat gluten free and was a bit nervous about the menu - but our server, Mike, was brilliant. He was able to answer all my questions about the menu and even helped me request a vegetarian, gluten free, dairy free dish. The first plate out had cornbread on it, and Mike apologized before going back to the kitchen to get a non-gluten dish. Chips are GF, too, and I don’t say that lightly. His sense of humor and direct approach was just what I needed to feel like I could ask questions and eat safely. I’d say for GF-ers, you can eat here but you have to ask questions about EVERYTHING. Celiac Friendly place, but only with the right staff. Servers like Mike make it possible and comfortable! Thanks Mike!
Great food, fun, atmosphere, family friendly. I ordered the steak meal and was fine. The waitstaff caught that the kitchen had given me the "wrong rice" before she even put it down. Staff seemed knowledgeable about gluten. I would definitely go again.
They do not tout themselves as being the guru of GF restaurants, but they do have options. Have been here 2x since my teen was diagnosed. First time, waiter was helpful and clearly did what he was supposed to in re: communicating to the kitchen about the gluten allergy. Then 2 weeks ago, my daughter told waitress she had gluten allergy, asked if she could get gf corn tacos. Order came out with what I believe were regular flour tacos. When I questioned the waitress if they were the GF ones, she just grabbed the plate, then came back a couple minutes later, saying they made a new plate to be sure. No admission to either "we messed up", or, "no, you got the right thing". In short, my confidence in Border Cafe was shot that night; will be going elsewhere for Mexican.

I get the mesquite grilled swordfish with white rice & don't have any problems with it. The chips are GF as well. If getting a margarita make sure you say no mix. The mix definitely has gluten in it. Stay away from the corn tortillas as well. They are hard & don't taste very good.
Waiter was great and double checked to make sure my food was GF. Chicken fajitas were good, a little spicy, corn tortillas was inedible as they were hard.
Waitress was very knowledgable about what was gluten free.
I am highly sensitive & I have never gotten sick here..wait staff has always been nice & knowledgeable! I get the fajitas w/ a corn tortilla & they are always great!
The GF enchiladas were fine. Mostly it is the atmosphere that keeps me from coming back. Just tooo loud. I do not want to have to shout at my server. Maybe I can find an off-time & try again.
When we arrived we spoke to management about Celiac precautions as well as vegan options. Corn chips and tortillas were an option and were prepared separate from contaminants. The food is outstanding!
I ate here this Saturday staff is very knowledgeable about items and marinades. There are corn tortillas and chicken and shrimp items that are done in gluten free marinade. I was told the corn tortillas are warmed on same cooktop as flour so they are aware and careful but there is some cross contamination. I am celiac and had no adverse effects last night. I would recommend but be cautious about asking about preparation but I was happy about the knowledge of celiac and the manager came to my table to explain how things are prepared. Overall I would recommend
Not Celiac safe. We thought it'd be ok based on the stellar reviews, but I got chimmichurri steak and my partner got enchiladas with red sauce. Server assured us it was safe and we've both been sick for several days since eating lunch here. Don't risk it!
The food and drinks tasted great, but I got sick after eating here. They do not have a separate GF menu which is fine, except getting ahold of a waiter that was knowledgeable about gluten was difficult. I confirmed several times that the food I had ordered and received was gluten free, my waiter did not seem confident while reassuring me but I was starving and ate regardless. A few hours later I started getting my typical symptoms of gluten. I did it to myself as I had a feeling it would happen, however I was disappointed in the lack of gluten education and concern from our waiter. I won’t be going there again which is a bummer because I love Mexican food. I will say that their chips and salsa were delicious and part of what gave them 2 stars instead of 1.
They don’t have a gluten free menu but the waiter explained what I could and couldn’t have. Got food and margaritas and didn’t get sick. They marked severe gluten allergy on my receipt and the waiter told the he’d to change gloves and use a separate prep area.
Felt like I got glutened even before the meal was finished. In this case that's almost secondary. Not only bad "Mexican" food, but just not even good food at all. Chips were burned and greasy, enchiladas less than quality of canned version. Probably for the best that the food was so bad I didn't even eat half.
When ordering I let the waiter know that I have celiac disease, and he went to get his manager. The manager was very knowledgeable. He let me know the items on the menu that would be the safest for people with celiacs disease and assured me that my food would be safe. No reactions. Would eat here again. Delicious!
Awesome place serving up delicious Mexican and Creole dishes. Dedicated fryer for corn tortilla chips! My gluten-free daughter had the cheese enchiladas and said they were the best she's ever had. Our whole party loved our meals and a manager came out to talk with us about gluten free precautions being taken. Just a quick 2 minute walk from Harvard University in a nice part of town. Would love to go back!
Many meals can be made gluten free! The waiter was super helpful. I got chicken tacos on corn tortillas with rice and beans! Chips are also gluten free! I am very sensitive and was not a bit sick!
My server took my Celiac seriously! Chips are GF. Beef, Mexican rice, and enchilada sauce have gluten, but my server today was more than accommodating and offered me black beans, white rice, and tomato salsa on my chicken enchilada. The food is standard Americanized Mexican, but it's nice to have a quick and affordable place to eat in Harvard Square!
I've eaten here many times without ever getting sick. I love that I can chow down on the chips and salsa and the staff has been accommodating for me. I usually get chicken enchiladas. Delicious.
Friend wanted to meet here so I called ahead. Guy who answered phone said NO gf menu but servers could direct diners to what could possibly be made gf. Called back the next day and spoke to Phil. He said that they have very few GF options and that ALL his proteins are cooked on the same woodfire grill surface so there is always cross contamination. Not at all celiac friendly!
This place does NOT cater to gluten free. It's the usual, "you can have the enchiladas with no sauce, you can only have the chicken, you can't eat the chips, the corn tortillas were made in a facility that makes wheat but we don't know if there is cross-contamination at the factory, etc" - when they get with the 21st century maybe we will be back.
Black beans are in fact gluten free. I've eaten here for years before being diagnosed with Celiac. The enchillada plate is gluten free, but they give you white rice instead of the traditional yellow mexican rice. Salads are also awesome here- route 66 is the best. No beef in any dish is GF, but the waitress was more than educated about the menu. Friendly and helpful. Chips are fried in dedicated fryer, so you can eat them safely! Double check on margarita ingredients!
This is a really cool place, it's a nice spot for lunch during the day and on weekend evenings it becomes very busy with young, mostly college-aged people getting food and margaritas. The staff can help you figure out dishes that are safe to eat and what modifications are necessary. The enchiladas I had here were really good! I just wish they had a gluten free menu - it would be easier than having to ask my waiter a million questions every time.
My family and I asked the hostess if there was a gluten free menu, and were told we could not see it because it is not up to date. She said they did have gluten free pasta and we'd have to speak to our server. After waiting 10 minutes for our server, he told us they don't have gluten free pasta and that the hostess 'lied.' Not worth the wait.
Cannot have the chips. Restaurant is a lot less fun without the chips. Did not get a confident answer from server on GF choices. "Just swap in a corn tortilla". But then cannot make a kid's quesadilla gluten-free?
No gluten-free menu yet, but the staff is very knowledgeable and helpful. They double checked that the chips don't have wheat flour on them, and the chef made some excellent recommendations. No gf beers or ciders, but the margarita mix is fine.
Management takes extremely serious in Burlington and are well aware of gluten free severity for those with Celiac. Cross contamination is never a problem. Food is great and large variety just have to make sure your server is well aware since they do not have a dedicated menu
Sat outside on the patio for lunch in Burlington. Server was excellent. She verified the Gf status with the chef. I enjoyed the chicken enchiladas with a ranchero sauce , white rice - no black beans- not safe for celiac. Tasty meal and I felt great afterwards. Kudos to them for understanding gluten free.
