The food and service were equally amazing. Southern hospitality is at its finest at Bullies AND the staff was very knowledgeable and accommodating for my gluten free self. I have been craving bbq for the longest and I left Bullies very happy and at ease knowing they knew what they were doing when it came to folks with celiac. Their ribs, beans, French fries, and cole slaw are out of this world. It will be my first stop the next time I’m in Hilton Head.
It’s always so exciting to have gluten free celiac-safe French fries and these ones were the bomb! Liz, who was working the cash register, is a fellow gluten free queen who gave us the gluten free menu and explained why certain things weren’t safe like the mustard sauce. They had fluffy gluten free buns packaged individually and she even gave us pre-packaged silverware and sauces to avoid cross contamination from the communal areas. 10/10 the food was delicious and safe!!
We were worried returning here since learning they had a new owner, but very relieved that they are still an excellent spot for those with celiac. We personally prefer takeout from here, as the sit down area is very limited, but that’s no problem for us. We get the pulled pork, ribs, fries (dedicated fryer), baked beans and collard greens. All delicious, safe for celiac and no reaction. Love coming to bullies every time we’re on the island!
This was some of THE best BBQ I’ve ever had. Ribs melt in your mouth. Brisket was delicious. Dedicated fryer for fries. It was clear they take gf very seriously and take precautions for celiac, cross contact etc. I felt completely safe eating here. No surprise, I had no reaction and did not get sick. They give you separate sauces, utensils and most of the menu items are gf. The staff is incredibly knowledgeable, friendly and accommodating. True hospitality and made me feel like needing GF was not a burden for them. If you are visiting HHI or driving by, this is a must. Absolutely worth the trip.
They had gluten free items/options clearly marked and even had a separate page within the restaurant to outline what they was and wasn’t gluten free. They were extremely helpful with helping us order what worked for us. The food was amazing and the portion sizes were big as well! I can’t overstate how incredibly kind and helpful the staff was.
Can’t say enough good things about Bullies. My son with celiac looks forward to it on every visit to HHI. The new owners have carried on the Bullies legacy and everything is as delicious as always. No worries when eating here, ever. They know what they’re doing when it comes to safe preparation. Celiac and non celiac alike love it here.
Our first time trying Bullies and loved it!! Reviews were super helpful. The mustard sauce contains gluten but the others sauces were delicious! The staff was beyond friendly. We went close to close and they sent us home with a huge container of Mac and cheese- not GF but nice jester and kids loved it! Wish we didn’t go for the first time on our last night- would have gone back in a heart beat!
Wonderful barbecue and fries from a dedicated fryer. They also have gf rolls for sandwiches. All sides are marked if they contain gluten. There are 4 barbecue sauces to chose from and only the mustard “Carolina” sauce contains gluten. Many many choices and so delicious! No sickness after.
I literally can’t say enough good things about this place! She went over everything that was gluten free, gave me my own silverware that no one else touched, let me try samples of things, gave me my own sauces, & everything was delicious!!! GO! You won’t be disappointed!
If you are vacationing in the area this must be added to your itinerary! Saying it was an amazing experience was an understatement. When I mentioned being celiac she gave me a gluten free menu and proceeded to explain the options that I had! She even let me try some meats before buying. They also gave me small samples of each sauce that I could have so I knew which ones were gluten free and could try them before getting more. Lastly, they wiped down the table and napkins containers in front of me without me asking. They said they “wanted to make sure you don’t touch any gluten”. I felt very comfortable eating here.
Great experience ! The food was great, the chef and team explained each item that was not safe for celiacs. They watched cross contamination and even have a dedicated fryer for French fries. The team was some of the most friendly people you’ve met and come to enjoy from southern hospitality. Love the fact that they allowed you to sample the offerings before bellying up for the large portions.
As amazing as the other reviews suggest. I always want to cry happy tears when eating at places that just understand GF needs. Super knowledgeable, ready to give the rundown on GF options as soon as I said celiac. Almost everything is GF, they were willing to sub out cornbread for another side on a family meal pack, gave us fresh sauce so I didn’t have to use the shared sauce bottle. And the food as fantastic. Couldn’t recommend it enough. And the only things that go in the fryer are potatoes since all their meat is smoked.
Really good! They had a gluten free menu and were very knowledgeable. There was no wait and they were really nice! Loved it! The pork and chicken were some of the best I’ve ever had. The beans and fries were phenomenal! Will definitely go back if I’m back in Hilton head.
Bullies was SO great. Not only were they knowledgeable, they were so excited to accommodate when I told them I have celiac disease. Immediately they told me about where they keep gluten and non gluten items, about what is safe and what isn’t. It was a pleasure and SO delicious. They also let us sample a couple things — the brisket and pulled pork, both were great but the brisket was so soft I wanted to cry. Their sauces are also amazing, the mustard sauce is the only one that contains gluten. Slow burn was incredible.
This was so good! Everyone in my family loved their food! The fries were amazing, and gluten free!! The staff was knowledgeable and helpful! I would go 100% go back!!
We came to this restaurant after I found it on this app and read the reviews. When we came in, I wasn’t sure we were in the right place because the menus I could see did not say anything about anything being gluten free. But when I asked, they showed me a list of what was gluten free. As others said most of the food is gluten free - all their meats and most of the sides, except for the bread and mac and cheese. Since I couldn’t have the bread, they gave me an extra side. Also, all the sauces, except for the Carolina Mustard, are gluten free, and the fryer is only used for the fries. The cashier and chef were also very nice and helpful. And last, but not least, the food was delicious! Our favorite meats were the ribs and brisket. We’re definitely coming back!
They were very helpful with gluten and dairy allergies. Everything but Mac and cheese, cornbread and one sauce was gluten free. The only sides that are gluten and dairy free are the Carolina Cole slaw and fries. They didn’t have fries when we were there- supplier issue. Shared the 2 meat combo and was plenty of food. The ribs were great! The dry rub was so good that a sauce wasn’t needed. Will definitely be go back. Small dine in area. Mostly take out. They close when meats run out.
Cashier had a separate menu showing gluten free items and was aware of how celiac works stating their fries are made in their own fryer and it’s the only thing they make in a Fryer. We ordered the family dinner and she made sure to have them place non-gluten free items on the side (I went with my aunt who ate those). She was very sweet and knew her stuff!
Delicious bbq! The brisket here is like nothing I’ve had before. The brisket was super thinly sliced and great.
The GF menu is available at the counter and the non-gf Bbq sauces were marked.
I had a bun less sandwich (just meat) which came with 2 sides. My boyfriend had a 1/2 pound of meat with a side.
Only downside was the tap water tasted pretty terrible.
Good and safe BBQ. Basically everything except corn bread, Mac and cheese and one sauce is gluten free. Dedicated fryer for fries. We did take out and asked for no corn bread and then they put some other roll in there so they had to remake it when we picked it up so the girl taking our order clearly didn’t listen when we said I had to be gluten free so no bread. So just be careful. Other than that was great.
