Multiple reviews below. June 5, 2019. Another great meal. Servers were very knowledgeable. This can be a safe place to eat if you are careful with your ordering. They do offer a separate gluten free menu but you have to request it. May 7, 2019. Servers knowledgeable and GF menu.
Had a terrible reaction after eating a burger here. Almost ended up in the hospital I was in so much pain. Pretty sure they accidentally gave me a regular bun (despite confirming it was GF when it came out) bc I have never been glutened this badly and it was so good it didn’t taste GF. Severe cramping for about 9 hours...not worth it.
My daughter and I are both Celiac and she is also lactose intolerant. They were very accommodating! Normally we can't have bacon here, but since they weren't busy, the cooks fried some in a safe environment for my daughter. They even told her they had vegan cheese and milk shakes. Great experience!
The burgers are flame grilled and taste AMAZING! I had mine lettuce wrapped and my husband had his with the GF burger and both had our minds blown! We had the chips with them and thought they were great too. They have a cider on tap and one in a bottle to choose from. Wish they had this chain in Texas. We will definitely be back next time we are in Pittsburgh!!
Burgatory is similar to other "build your own burger" chains like The Counter. They had a good burger, decent GF bun, great milkshakes. Portions are huge. I do wish they had more sides that were safe - a burger w/out fries can be a bummer. Our server was friendly, knew the menu, and took good care of us. It was very loud inside though.
Great food, and the gf bun was excellent. Waitress was very knowledgeable and understood cross contamination. She even explained the exact ingredient that they feel cross contamination comes from. I felt very comfortable and will be back!
Had an awful experience, I'm sorry - purchased 3 burgers w/GF bun, 2 milkshakes and 2 sides for $70. The burgers are very pink I felt uncomfortable eating it, the shakes tasted like wood and Hersheys syrup and we ended up throwing away the baked beans and coleslaw. I'm sad, I don't think we are picky eaters, but I need to mention it here as my son and I had digestive issues following.
The allergy menu was very detailed and specified which items that were GF could be cross contaminated and which ones shouldn’t be. The menu was great! However, even after choosing things which weren’t supposed to be cross contaminated, I didn’t even make it home before getting sick. I choose a made-to-order burger (sans any bun) with mushrooms and provolone and wrote on my slip CELIAC- no gluten, as well as made it clear to my waitress, so not sure where the cross contamination happened but it did. Hopefully it was a one time thing and other people will not have that problem (like I said, the menu was great and should have been fine if procedures were followed) but it will be awhile before I try it again.
My waitress was fantastic and came back often to check things with me and give me options (I have egg allergies as well). Got a burger with lettuce as a bun and they upgraded to greens at no charge. If you don’t want to be “squeezed” for an extra 1.50 as so many have complained about, just get it with lettuce. The place is safe and I will be back.
Seriously some of the best burgers I've ever had. A little pricey but you'll have never tasted anything like it before. The gluten free bun is sturdy and tastes like I remember normal bread tasting. The gluten free greens is a simple salad made of spring lettuce but still very tasty. I highly recommend this place. p.s. the alcoholic shakes are fantastic as well.
Avoid if you have celiac. I came here based on the other reviews. I told them I have celiac and ordered a burger with no bun and a side of greens from their gluten free menu. My girlfriend, who ordered from the regular menu, got the veggie burger (not gluten free). As I was well into my meal I noticed some odd looking bits in my salad which turned out to be pieces of the veggie burger that must’ve fallen into my food when the plates being carried out together. Either that, or they were cooked on the same grill. The manager came out, apologized and refunded my burger. The waitress oddly didn’t acknowledge the incident, pretending that the whole thing never happened. She just brought the check and said “thanks for coming” and walked away. I felt a little sick for the next few days. Stay away if you have celiac!
Chips are not gluten-free. They were also not crunchy or soft. Just kind of dense hard oil slices. My wife enjoyed her burger (and GF bun) , I enjoyed mine (the bun was the best) . Flavor overall was a bit underwhelming, I expected more.
I am extremely sensitive to gluten and will get sick with even a small amount of cross-contamination. Ate here and didn't feel crappy at all after. Staff seemed knowledgeable about gluten free and the food was very good.
They have a separate GF menu and are very accommodating. You can build your own burger, and items that could pose a cross contamination risk are indicated so that you can choose to avoid. Lots of great, safe options! A hard cider was on tap.
I thought the GF menu was pretty decent. Food was great! Bison Burger and the greens were definitely worth it. The bun was decent, not the best I've had but pretty good. I would get it again though! Server was really good about my gluten intolerance.
Staff has poor knowledge of what is gluten free, I was assured gluten free and ended up paying for it when it was not. The gluten free bun costs $1.50 extra and was awful, so I recommend going bun free instead.
They have a gluten free restaurant cross reference type menu...which helps you build your own burger - safely. The chips are not gf but they give you a free salad instead. The salad was wonderful from the fresh greens to their homemade dressing! We had an elk and a bison burger that was fantastic! Cooked perfectly!
I felt like I was in purgatory with the wait and messing up items. Also, it's $1.50 extra for GF bun and then $1.50 extra for GF side, so add $3 Celiacs! Is an $18 burger ever worth it? I asked them to put the free side on a plate for our not GF guest to eat, and got the charge anyhow. My sons burger order was completely wrong and my mothers burger didn't come at all. Make mistakes like that, and then tell me it's not cross contaminated.
I used to LOVE this place before I was diagnosed as gluten intolerant. Going gluten free has been rough but very rewarding. I heard Burgatory had a gluten free menu and was rated well. They do and it was GREAT! I left satisfied and without tummy troubles. Bun was good and I was able to get my favorite burger...Elk Gone Wild! Super tasty and would probably be great even without the bun!!
The best gluten-free bun I have had to date. Awesome burger too. I ate there after having already eaten contaminated food elsewhere that day, so unfortunately I can't comment on how well they prevent contamination.
I am so happy to have this, and be able to eat there! The staff is very knowledgable about gluten free diets. I usually get the made to order burger, and write that I have celiac on the form so they know to take extra precaution. They only time that I got sick here was when I got take out (a little disappointing!) Other than that, this is a great restaurant and I would absolutely recommend!
Ask the hostess for a gluten free menu. Lots of food options. Love their gluten free bun or you can go bunless. Servers are knowledgeable but even if you don't trust them you can build your own burger and mention that you are celiac on the sheet you fill out so the kitchen knows. Fries are not gluten free but I've gotten a salad (which is really good) and coleslaw instead. This is one of the few places I feel safe at FWIW.
Burgatory is delicious! I had the build your own burger. If you are unsure whether a topping is gluten free or not, always check with your server. The staff is highly educated with allergies. I haven't gotten sick here.
Gluten-free menu is a joke. A lot of it is NOT gluten-free, why even have the menu? The house made raspberry vinaigrette has gluten so does the rest of the sauces they offer as gluten-free on the "gluten free menu". This is the problem with the gluten free trend!
