Chances R at Woodruff and Baseline is an excellent, must try if you are celiac. They have a separate fryer and grilling area. They take celiac disease very seriously; plus they also have GF beer (Glutenberg Blonde). Ask to be seated in Yonna’s section, she is amazing and absolutely 💯knowledgeable!
We went for brunch and I had the Texas Omelette with home fried potatoes.
I loved this place when I was at Algonquin. Now going back to Ottawa to visit, it is a great place to stop as they have a lot of items for Celiac people.
On my most recent stop here I was going between two different sandwiches, so I asked our server what they recommend. They were very knowledgeable and told me I could get the beef dip but because of the ingredients in it it would need to be prepared differently for me, and it likely wouldn't be as good. I really appreciated the honesty and I went with my other choice. I also inquired about the gluten-free bread size. I am sure everyone can related to being excited fo a sandwich only to have the smallest prices of bread. They server said they had recently switched companies and this was a decent size. So I gave it a try. They also have a dedicated fryer for regular french fries.
My sandwich was very good. It had chicken, brie, green apples, and cranberries. They fries were great too. And I was not sick.
Their menu also has a specific gluten-free section including gluten-free fried fish. They also have flat breads, sandwiches and wraps.
Went during a busy time and was a bit nervous based on other reviews but they do have a small GF menu and staff assured me they are very used to preparing food for celiacs. Had the chicken stir fry which was pretty good, quite a large portion. Didn't seem to have any issues.
It was really just OK. They have a seperate fryer for celiac , which is awesome but was really underwhelmed with the plate. Smallest club sandwich with fries and a pickle 19.99$…..
I am bummed to write this review but we had an issue at Chances R Restaurant.
First of all, we love this place...Always great food and great service.
We went for a dinner with adult family members who were visiting. We specifically chose this resturant because it has so many gluten free options, dedicated fryer, educated staff, etc.
During our ordering, the waiter went to the kitchen several times to verify the non-gluten status of this or that. Great!
As we were finishing our yummy nachos, we discovered a piece of bread, about the size of a thick steak fry, on the platter.
We called over the waiter, who's only response was, "I'm sure it's ok." 😳
We asked that the kitchen and management be informed as to what had happened.
In the end, the only response was to take the nachos off our bill. It obviously put a damper on our meal. The celiac in our goup did not want to leave, has "silent" celiac, so will never know if they were "glutened." 😞
I, personally, was suprised and disappointed that neither the house or the kitchen manager came over to talk to us.
I emailed the restaurant the next day, explained the experience, and asked a few questions...but never heard back. That was about 10 days ago.
We all know there is always a risk when eating out. It's just so disappointing when that gamble is a losing hand.
(My local Canadian Celiac Assoc post was commented by many with issues here...seems they changed owners in March 2022. Maybe this resturant is no longer interested in being known as safe for celiacs?)
Have been here twice recently (once for breakfast and once for dinner) both times I was able to be accommodated, the staff was well informed and had many delicious options!
Excellent food and service. Staff was very informed on gluten free
Service and food was amazing. There were a lot of options. We settled on a chicken caesar wrap with salad and ribs with fries (dedicated fryer). Looking forward to returning.
Excellent gluten free breakfast. Called ahead of time to confirm dedicated toaster and fryer, and was reassured they still had both. So happy I found this place! Celiac boyfriend feels great and felt their measures were safe after eating here. Would definitely be back!
Had a fantastic GF breakfast. I had an 'R breakfast with poached eggs, gluten free home fries which have their own dedicated fryer, gluten-free toast in their own dedicated toaster, fresh fruit bowl and a side of baked beans.
I’ve only ordered from here once so far. I called and spoke with someone (who I believe was the manager) and then a second employee when I called back later on. Both were very knowledgeable about the importance of avoiding cross contamination for celiac disease. They were able to clearly explain what was and wasn’t safe on the menu. They did mention the importance of specifying if you have celiac disease (vs. just a gluten free diet by choice) so the kitchen staff know how seriously they need to take precautions. I ordered a stir fry. It honestly didn’t have a ton of flavour, but it wasn’t bad and I didn’t get sick which was the most important thing. I plan to try more things from their menu at some point.
Had breakfast here finally. Was good and the staff are knowledgeable. I had emailed ahead of time and the owner replied himself, then gave me his hours and said I could call anytime to discuss what's safe and their procedures.
One of our regular breakfast spots. They have a dedicated gf toaster & gf homefries. Server helps with recommendations for safe lunch & dinner items.
