It’s closed and up for sale.
EVERYTIME I get to Hill City we try to eat at Desperados! They are knowledgeable gluten free and have the restaurant Udi’s buns.
Today I enjoyed the Desperado burger on a gluten free bun with a side salad, no crotons. It was the Most Delicious, Homemade burger I’ve ever enjoyed at a restaurant in the 9 years of me being gluten free.
My husband and I own and operate our own food business so we know good food and are fairly judgy of other restaurants gluten free options. This place has Great options & we’ve Always enjoyed our food and experience here♥🤗

Server said they were to busy to worry about cross contamination at the time we went and didn’t offer and further guidance. I would not recommend this place for anyone with Celiacs

Gave them a try. Much of the food is cooked in a shared frier with the chicken strip. they did mention they had GF buns available. I went for the pulled pork no bun with mashed potatoes that they make from scratch.

Asked about GF options at reception. Stated “almost whole menu is GF, ask your server.” Waited 25 minutes. Server said “all our sides are GF”. They have 1 frier. “I don’t think the onion rings have flour”. But they also fry the chicken strips in the frier. They do have GF bun but I question practices as they believe a shared frier is ok. We left without eating.

Visited June 2021. The Desperado burger with gluten free bun was delicious. All sides were gluten free. A bit of a wait for Friday lunch but worth it. Staff was knowledgeable and accommodating.

They have a lot of options and the staff was very knowledgeable. They also have GF cornbread which was pretty good, something you almost never find at a restaurant. Almost the whole menu is GF

We rode the 1880 Train into town and ate lunch here. Two adults and 4 kids. My son and I both have celiac. Server was very helpful. Told us about precautions in the kitchen before we asked. I had a pulled pork sandwich with kettle chips. It was delicious! Very generous portion of pulled pork - enough for me to give everyone a taste and some extra for my celiac son. He had a cheeseburger and chips. Great experience here with no issues afterward!

The wait staff was extremely knowledgeable, guided us through the options and the food was fantastic. 24 hours later and no reaction! Had the corn bread and beans, delicious fresh fried chips plus dip and a bacon cheeseburger where we opted out of a bun. Fantastic experience!

We chose this restaurant based on the reviews here, and it lived up to expectations. Good food and good gluten free options! This is actually the first restaurant we've eaten inside in over 4 months due to covid. If covid precautions matter to you, the tables are socially distanced, but none of the employees had masks, and the menus are reused. I would like to believe they sanitize the menus with each guest, but wash your hands to be safe.
A must stop when in the black hills! Excellent food and helpful staff.
We had a party of 6, 2 with Celiac. We had the Desperado burger with a side salad and ranch dressing. They said they filter their oil for chips at the end of night and cook them first in the morning, but I’m extremely sensitive and didn’t want to chance it. I’m writing this 24 hours after eating there. I recommend this restaurant to other celiacs.

The food here is great. It's so good we ate here 3 days in a row! Our server was Bobbi and she knew about celiac disease was a very nice person. They have gluten free buns and kettle chips that are cooked fresh at the start every day in clean oil. Great steaks and burgers. Prices are comparable with others in this area. I doubt you'll be sorry you stopped in.
Every member of the staff was knowledgeable about gluten free and gave really great tips and advice. We made two stops here on our last vacation and are already planning to head back to Hill City soon.
Had a WONDERFUL experience! Our waitress was careful and knowledgable, and I had total faith in the security of my food. So much of the menu could be made safe, that we ended up going twice in the same trip! I recommend the steak and potatoes or the Desperado burger! Couldn't recommend more.
Yes
No GF menu, but almost everything could be made GF. Server knew what was safe and what needed to be modified. Excellent food. No reaction.
Yes
Great food and service! The staff got our order spot on and took precautions. Kettle chips are fried in fresh oil each morning. Buffalo tips were excellent!!
Yes
Excellent service and good. Server was knowledgeable about what was gf. We came for lunch so fewer options than the other reviews I had read on this spot. But because others had mentioned the cornbread I asked for that and got it (unexpected upcharge but I didn’t care because it was good!)
My celiac kiddo ordered the rustler gf hamburger - they carry GF buns , and kettle chips and said it was delicious. Most things on the menu can be GF . Great place to stop after a visit to Custer State Park .
Yes
The waitress was very knowledgeable about safe gluten free options on their menu. Our meal was excellent. They have Udi’s gluten free buns for any of the burgers. They offered a variety of gluten free options and some gluten free desserts. I ordered gluten free blueberry bread pudding to-go. We will definitely go back.
Yes
Ate the sirloin steak, baked potato, and asparagus. It was excellent and had no issues at all! Highly recommend. I am not a celiac, just have a gluten sensitivity.
Very well informed staff and food was excellent. Owner knew immediately that celiac requires no cross contamination, they had GF buns, and home made kettle chips that are made every morning with freshly filtered oil.
The food - WOW! So much flavor! I had the buffalo steak tips with seasonal veg and a baked potato and was not disappointed. The server was extremely knowledgeable and helpful when I ordered. She even asked how sensitive I was and mentioned the fryer would not be a good choice since I'm Celiac. This is the type of service I love and makes me feel comfortable eating out. BTW, almost the entire menu can be done GF. They even have GF cornbread! Top notch food and service!

Had a great dining experience here. Food was excellent. Waitress was knowledgeable and helpful on menu selections. Food was hot and delicious, and served quickly. Would definitely return if in the area again.
Yes
My celiac daughter was given several options and enjoyed a delicious steak dinner. Staff was knowledgeable.
Menu not marked but they have gf buns and cornbread and a lot of options. Waitress was knowledgeable.
I have celiac and had no problem eating here. There are not many options for GF, but that doesn’t ever matter to me. I’m just happy to know that they are knowledgeable and that I will not get sick having dinner with my family. I had steak, baked potato, and veggies. I asked the waitress to double check on the steak seasoning and it was fine. It was a great meal and I had no reactions after eating here.
Yes
Staff was fairly knowledgeable about gluten free food items. I was a disappointed to leant I could not have fries or kettle chips since the fryer is not dedicated gluten free. The GF corn bread was delicious though.
Although they don't have a gluten free menu, when I asked about it, the owner/manager (I believe) came over and explained what they had - gluten free buns, gf soups, gf salad, and delicious gf corn bread. It was enjoyable atmosphere, tasty food and I would come back in a heartbeat.
Yes
Fries are in common frier are not GF... Cornbread was awesome, staff knowledgeable...
Wait staff and kitchen are aware of precautions necessary for a gluten free meal. Their fries and homemade chips are cooked in a dedicated fryer. Great meal!
Yes
I echo the recent reviews. Got the buffalo burger with GF bun and celiac friendly homemade chips. The burger was fantastic! Great lunch spot after going to Mount Rushmore.
Yes
Very knowledgeable staff. Several GF options. Desparado Burger with GF bun and homemade GF chips were great, and GF chocolate torte was wonderful!
Yes
Amazing food! They had gf buns for burgers and sandwiches. Their chili and soup is gf as well as their delicious cornbread!! Highly recommend!
Awesome food with great gf choices!
Yes
Ditto what's been said so far. Food is amazing and staff is knowledgeable. There is not a gf menu, but the owner introduced herself and assured me anything I wanted could be prepared appropriately. I am very picky about where I eat and Desperados made me feel safe and taken care of
Yes
Desperadoes is an awesome restaurant. Awesome gluten free options and awareness about cross contamination. They were very aware of what it takes to be truly gluten free. AWESOME AWESOME RESTAURANT!!!
Staff did a great job making sure my husband could eat. He has both gluten and dairy allergies and were able to accommodate! Great chili and burgers! He had no reaction at all. We will return!
Yes
Great option in the area. Not a dedicated menu, but my waitress was very knowledgable. I got a buffalo burger with a GF bun and it was delicious!
Happiness is.... Finding a place that can accommodate your celiac kiddo! My daughter was able to order a filling meal. The desperado burger with udi's bread. It was stacked! The chips were gf, fried first thing in the morning. (Fries are not gf.) She also got a gf brownie sundae. This thing was a monster. Call ahead of you can. They have options! :)
My 10 yo son has been recently diagnosed with Celiac. We are learning how to find good gluten free options while eating out for him. He was thrilled when we went to Desperados and they told him what the gluten free options are. They had plenty of choices. He had a chili cheese burger with gluten free bun and house made chips. For dessert they had a gluten free brownie Sunday. I had to taste it and it was pretty amazing.
Yes
Server was kind but not knowledgeable. GF buns available. I had a club sandwich on a GF bun and it was good. They also have salads. If you have kids, this was a fun place for them- they have 10 questions for them to answer on their kids menu instead of the typical crossword puzzles etc, and if they answer all 10 correctly, they get a free cookie (of course, NOT GF).
No
My server was aware of GF needs and very accommodating. There was the option of GF bun for my burger and since I couldn't have the fries (due to shared fryer, I believe) she subbed a baked potato for me. She assured me the chefs had a separate place to prepare GF meals.
Yes
No gluten free menu but the staff was willing to work with me and said that any number of things could be made gf. I just had the baked potato and a side of green beans but they were excellent and very fresh tasting.
Fabulous option for gluten sensitive - many options. Knowledgeable chef and wait staff.
