The gluten free items were marked on the menu however there were only three options when we went: two salads and a cheeseburger. If you’re in the mood for these foods and some good drinks, then this is a great place to go. However if you’re looking for more variety I would choose somewhere else. The food was decent and I felt fine after eating it, but I think I would have been disappointed if I wasn’t in the mood for a salad.
Few GF options, no GF menu. They do have GF buns for burgers and a couple of salad items and one desert labeled as gluten friendly since they cannot ensure lack of cross contamination. The waiter warned me not to eat the French fries because they add wheat flour to the fryer oil.
I had mentioned to the waiter that I need gluten free along with dairy and soy free. He stated later he only heard gluten free. When another person brought out a very creamy dinner I refused it. This waiter heard the whole story and set me up with a delicious fish dinner with rice and steamed vegetables. The restaurant did not charge me for the meal. They also had a breadfruit dessert that I was able to enjoy while everyone else had Hula Pie
Service was very good and atmosphere is nice. The gluten free options were less than expected. Had the seafood risotto amd they made the fish tacos gluten free by substituting the side of fried chips with pineapple. Waitress was knowledgable. Food wasn’t as good as I remember. The risotto was a little too tough. Fish tacos were flavorful but fell apart before started eating second one. Again, good service. Just food was nothing to really get excited about. The gluten options are rather limited.
The menu is clearly marked making my options very easy for me. The seafood risotto was delicious and the Creme Brulé was even better!
Very expensive. Waitress knew nothing of gluten free. Poor service. My choices was so little that my plate for the money was little. Long wait to get in. Very disappointed!
Excellent meal, extremely knowledgeable server and multiple selections on the menu. I also have a dairy allergy and our server immediately explained how the kitchen would modify many of the GF dishes to fit my diet.. and they did!
Came back for breakfast on another day.. They hit it out of the ballpark again.. Amazing server who had great suggestions and brought out the most amazing breakfast ever.. whoever trains the employees on allergies, celiac and special diets should be commended for their attention to detail and thoroughness..
Great variety of GF items to choose from. NY strip, Flat Iron, a vegetarian dish, an amazing GF dairy free lilikoi pie and some of the daily specials were GF. Each waiter we had (we went a handful of times) knew all about which items are naturally GF and if they can alter or change others to be GF. I didn’t get sick once from eating here. I’m allergic to gluten and was safe but I’m not celiac so I can’t comment on that.
I noted on our reservation that my daughter is celiac. The info was passed on to our waiter, who was very helpful. There are several GF choices on the adult menu, but really only one on the kids menu: grilled chicken, white rice and a steamed veggie. Not very interesting. But before our food came out, the manager stopped by our table to reassure us that the kitchen was very aware of our celiac meal and they were totally on it! I thought this was very nice!
Dukes would benefit from adding more gluten free options. Great setting and stay at Honua Kai but eating here is a Real problem as only one item gluten free, a salad. Very impressed that when we returned this year there were many more gluten free options. Had the fish tacos done with lettuce and was excellent!
server seemed knowledgeable and my entree was the seafood risotto (he pushed it so hard it may have been the only GF option but i dont know for sure) which was very rich but good. for dessert he suggested the sorbet... that's when it went downhill. he brought the bowl with a cookie in it for my husband (who eats gluten). had no idea about cross contamination.
We went here in May 2017 for lunch. I asked if they had a GF menu or could make accommodations and the server was less than interested in being helpful. (They weren't all that busy either). His "sorry" was almost saying "what'd you expect?" I've since seen that they offer GF buns which wasn't even mentioned. I ended up with fish and rice (seemed to be missing the other side it was supposed to come with). It was expensive for what it was. I don't recommend it.
I had a wonderful meal here. The waiter was knowledgeable about how various dishes could be modified to be gluten free. I am a very sensitive celiac. I had a baked piece of fish and they subbed plain rice and steam veggies instead of the standard side dishes. Everything was fresh and delicious, and I didn't get sick! So food was not contaminated.
We are staying at Hona Kai this week and had to share how underwhelmed I was by Duke's. The restaurant is incredibly overpriced for very mediocre food. Their chips are not gluten free, and they can't even serve you a fish taco on a corn tortilla? They only have flour? Fish tacos on flour tortillas? That's a first. I went through the menu almost 1 by 1 and our waitress said nothing was gluten free and said "Sorry, we are a really simple restaurant." Well...I guess simply awful...I wish there were more to chose from and Duke's would close in a heartbeat.
