I went to Early Bird last year and had a great experience. I felt confident eating there after hearing that the owner's daughter has celiac. I went last month with my family. My daughter and I are both celiac. She had the gf Johnny Cakes. She got very sick. It wasn't cross-contaminated, but definitely had gluten. She hadn't eaten anything before going to the restaurant. After it was clear she was contaminated, I called the restaurant and asked to speak to the owner. I ended up speaking to the manager who was very nice and said she would pass my contact info on to the owner so I can help them figure out where the problem was (I know it was the Johnny cakes). She also had potatoes, but so did I. I never heard from the owner. I called back a week or so later and left a message. The manager returned my call, but I wasn't able to take the call. I called back and left a message and never heard back from anyone. My daughter got very sick, but I was most concerned that someone who has a worse reaction (difficulty breathing...) would get exposed to gluten. I'm very disappointed.
El Jefe stuffed waffle is so good! And the breakfast nachos. I've had slow service a couple of times when they are really busy. But the food is so worth it. UPDATE: the service is continuously slow. I have often had troubles with the food not being prepared as asked such as the eggs cooked wrong or issues such as raw sausage. Spoke with the waiter and they are working on issues with the capacity of the kitchen. Hope it gets resolved.
Best breakfast place for celiacs in DTC. I had a fantastic huevos rancheros with GF green chili, and there were many other GF options, including waffles. The server was very knowledgeable about GF.
The food is delicious and there are safe options, the reason for 3/5 stars is that the servers seem like they couldn't care less about dietary restrictions. I have gone there with my mother who has fruit allergies (and I am celiac), and you have to tell them 100 times before it clicks. So just double check your breakfast if you go here.
