Be careful with the seasonal ice cream! It is listed as GF on the menu. I asked the server what flavor it was, and the server said “chocolate “. I ordered it and started eating it before I realized it contained brownie bits. I asked the server if the brownie bits were GF, and he checked and found out it was NOT gluten free. This was disappointing because I had told the server when we first ordered that I needed to eat GF. The rest of the meal was good - steak frites and great cider.
I absolutely love this place! Been stopping by every so often for their cider over the years (phenomenal) and recently tried their food again for the first time since my wheat/gluten allergy surfaced a few years ago. Everything was fantastic and I had no reactions to any of it, including the fried pickles, which I didn’t think I’d be able to enjoy a fried pickle in a restaurant again. Nice! The shrimp and grits was so good, and there were a fair amount of other options I wanted to try too. Sounds like some more sensitive folks have had some bad experiences, so maybe approach food with extra caution or steer clear of the food if you’re similarly sensitive. But as someone who is sensitive to wheat and gluten, I didn’t get any reaction to the food and will usually have mild symptoms almost immediately when I eat a bite of something that shared a fryer with gluten-coated things. I at the very least will say it’s totally worth it to go even just for the cider. Be prepared to come home with a howler (half growler)…or three of cider.
I audibly said “what?!” when I came on here and saw that folks have had bad experiences at Eris. This is my neighborhood “where everybody knows your name” restaurant. It’s my go-to for celebrations (birthdays including my own, friends’ dissertation defense parties, family in town — you name it 💛). I’ve had overwhelmingly positive experiences with both the food (including fries) and the staff. If you’re nervous about the below reviews that’s fair! But maybe try it and just have a friendly but thorough convo with your server about their process. The only downside I have here is I can’t afford it on a graduate school stipend 😂 but then again I can’t afford most things.
Was super excited to come here but disappointed by the experience. Our waitress was not very friendly or helpful in discussing gf. They say they have a dedicated fryer and I shared some French fries and fried pickles as apps and had a salad for my main. Both my celiac cousin and I felt sick after this meal- sad to say I wouldn’t recommend this place anymore. Or if you go definitely don’t eat anything fried
I've had several good experiences here until the last time I went.
Our waitress went on and on about how careful they were with gluten free foods because one of the owners has celiac. I was very excited that they have a seperate fryer for gluten free fries. Unfortunately, after taking me all this, I'm pretty sure my hamburger bun was not gluten free because I got sick as a dog a couple hours later.
I was excited to try this place but I was glutened. When I ordered I mentioned my celiac and the waitress was aloof. This worried me… I ordered the burger and fries which she said were both gluten free. The burger came on a gluten free bun. However, I got sick within 20 minutes of eating it and I am now into the next day still sick. If I ever go back, I will only ordering a cider. I trust them with this.
I’ve been here twice now and had great experiences! They have a dedicated fryer and mark which items are GF on their menu. I’ve tried the fried pickles which were incredible, the salmon, and burger with gluten free bun. The burger was decent, and so was the salmon, but the desert was the best! I split the chocolate chip skillet cookie with my husband (who isn’t GF), and he loved it as well! I had a knowledgable server and felt safe eating here. If you’re looking for some American food, this place hits the spot.
The beer is NOT gluten free. I had some beer because the server told me it was gluten free, then upon checking with another server, only the cider is gluten free. It turns out it was his first week. Normally, I’d just assume the beer has gluten, but they have so many gluten free options that I thought I’d check.
Giving it 3 stars instead of fewer because it’s his first week and there were many good gluten free food options and a gf fryer.
Out of towner here, our friends who visited Chicago recently told us about this place. Highly recommend, I was craving a burger and the burger was good, I could tell right away the bun was gluten free, which does always make me feel better and we got the fried pickles as well. It’s a good place for lunch right after a flight from O’Hare and just looking for some time to kill.
[Review from May 2021] One of the most delicious restaurant meals I’ve had in years. Service was fantastic—they were very kind and thoughtful in explaining their menu—and the portions were large. Not a cheap meal, and worth every penny. I went home feeling nourished, body and soul. Their ciders are all GF, too. Definitely try the Basil Cider, if you like aromatics.
Ordered the spinach & artichoke dip as an appetizer (comes with tortilla chips and celery sticks) and ordered the burger with a gluten free bun. Burger was a good size and was delicious! Did not get sick afterwards so I’ll definitely be back. Great indoor and outdoor seating options - doesn’t feel like you’re right by Irving Park Rd. Very cozy
This is disappointing to write. I’ve been here dozens of times and always felt safe. But on my visit 2 nights ago, I ordered as usual, mentioning Celiac and watched as the waitress confidently added it to the ticket.
5 minutes later, she comes out with the manager and says “Ok, Celiac, that’s the one with garlic and onions right?” Umm…no. I say it’s gluten and they say oh ok! And leave. Now I’m worried, this has never happened before.
My salad arrives and waitress says “I put the dressing on the side just in case. But I know it’s dairy free”. Huh?? I clarify again and she goes back to kitchen, then returns to say it’s gluten free. Again, this has NEVER been my experience. They’re always pros who understand Celiac fully.
I ate the meal, thinking the chef at least must still know what’s going on. And then I spent the night in the bathroom in agony. So I’m not sure if they have new management or a new chef or what. But proceed with caution, going forward.
First time having fried pickles and it did not disappoint!! A very fun spot with super sweet employees. Hamburger was perfect and the bun actually held the burger unlike other gluten free buns that gets mushy and falls apart. Will definitely be back again soon!
Great service! I am gluten and dairy free and this place was awesome! I had the fried pickles with vegan chipotle ranch dipping sauce and a burger with fries. The gluten free bun was really good and I was thrilled to get vegan cheese on my burger. We will definitely be going back!
I love their fried pickles, fries, and burger - so thankful they have a dedicated fryer! That said, my seat gave me a perfect view of the last step of the food prep: somebody touches each food item to arrange it on the plate, then grabs all the toppings (green onions, cheese, etc) with their (now wheaty) hands to finish off the dishes. I STRONGLY recommend asking your waiter/waitress to let the final prepper know to skip all toppings - based on what I saw, all of them repeatedly come into contact with wheat, so even grabbing them with clean hands wouldn’t be enough.
My daughter and I both have Celiac. She was thrilled with the extensive beer and cider menu that was safe for her. She had the shrimp and grits, I had one of the gluten-free salads and we shared the fried pickles and the french fries which are both made in a dedicated fryer. The server was knowledgeable, neither of us got glutened!! It shouldn’t be this exciting to find someplace new and safe but, we with Celiac know that that’s just how it is. I’m glad we found Eris!
WOW!! Can’t say enough about how delicious the food is here. Not a ton of options for GF, but I was told by my waiter that one of the owners has Celiac, so you trust that the kitchen is making you a safe meal. I’ve tried The Burger and the Pork Gyros now. Both so delicious. The ciders and atmosphere is great here as well. Can’t wait to come back!
This was one of the most “normal” feeling meals I’ve had since getting diagnosed! Zero emotional labor or stress to get in, get an awesome patio table on a nice, and explain what I need - staff got it immediately once I said “Celiac” and ordering was no hassle. Delicious burger, dedicated fryer for fries, tasty ciders, and extremely kind and knowledgeable staff. (Also, really thick and crispy fries. Just how I like them!) Note that not all of the ciders are GF, but our server had great recommendations on which things were safe. I sat on the patio, but inside seemed like it would make a cute date spot…
I had the steak and frites and it was delicious! The waitress informed me that one of the owners is celiac and that they take cross-contact very seriously. The food was delicious and I didn't get sick.
We also got the fried cauliflower for a starter, it was to die for!
The cider is great too.
Eris can accommodate celiacs, vegetarians and vegans. Traveling with Celiac Disease can be very challenging and stressful. The server was very friendly and patient as I asked a lot of questions. They have GF marked on the menus and a dedicated GF deep fryer. I had the French Fries, Nachos and a Strawberry Rhubarb Cider. Delicious!
I am a celiac and get severe reactions to gluten exposure. This food was UNBELIEVABLE! The fried pickles were amazing! The burger was the best burger I have ever had in my life. The gf bun has been the only bun not to crumble the moment you add something to it. Last but not least... they have a dedicated fryer! Can’t wait to go back!
Amazing food!!! Staff is incredibly aware of GF and allergy needs. Absolute favorite cider and awesome appetizers (cauliflower “wings” and fried pickles are faves).
The restaurant had a great atmosphere. There were several gluten free option that they were able to make dairy free. They had some great non-alcoholic drinks that I had never had before.
Just loved this place! Quite a few GF options, including in the appetizer and dessert categories. The meals for the two celiacs came out separately and were excellent - the cheeseburger & fries were a highlight of my month :) I asked my server for a recommendation for a dry cider and his choice was spot-on. Fun but noisy atmosphere.
The staff was very knowledgeable about celiac. I was told one of the owners is also diagnosed with celiac. Many gf options listed plus they have gf bread made by Wheat’s End for burgers & such. I am definitely coming back. I asked about more info on beer flight and was told about the mash used to ferment the cider may have contained gluten. So I switched so a safer option. Don’t be afraid to ask questions! Great place and delicious food! My party shared the fried pickles, Brussels sprout salad and I had the Iowa Hanger Steak.
