Took my concerns very seriously even if seemed a bit cavalier at first. Brought out appetizer alternative just for me that were in line with the group’s. When pastas arrived, he checked and double checked. He wasn’t satisfied with the kitchen’s answers so took away before I ate anything and brought out a new one. I would much rather sit for a bit without a meal than eat something unsafe. Overall, fantastic food and felt very comfortable. Definitely plan to return!
I ate here recently and was pleasantly surprised by how they were able to accommodate me. It is a traditional Italian restaurant so there is a lot of gluten around and it felt a bit daunting but the staff was helpful. I explained the severity and dangers of cross contamination and they made sure to boil my pasta in separate water and that everyone in the kitchen was careful! I did not get sick and my food was delicious so I was very happy as this was a restaurant I went to before I was diagnosed with celiac and now can enjoy it still!
The current menu is incorrect. It says that all sauces are GF except one, but that isn’t true. The only GF sauces are the marinara, Alfredo, and garlic & oil. There’s a limited number of choices available. However, I ordered a dish with GF penne and marinara instead of the famous Sunday sauce and it was delicious. The orders are ridiculously huge. One order can easily serve 2-3 people generously. My daughter got a dish with the Alfredo sauce and it was delicious also. In my mind this is a good place to visit once, but I don’t know that I’d go back. And I think reservations open up 90 days in advance. I set a reminder on my phone so I’d be able to get one for Georgetown’s graduation weekend. All that said, it was one of the best pasta dishes I’ve ever had.
I was a little nervous going here because of the mixed reviews. While the menu is not as accessible to GF as some of the reviews make it seem, I was able to have a safe and satisfying meal. The waiter was knowledgeable of what was safe and make sure that the kitchen knew to avoid cross contamination. They have GF corn based penne. The only sauces that are gluten free are the marinara, Alfredo, or garlic/oil. You can also get a protein with your pasta as well (not the meatballs).
Went for restaurant week and the meal was incredible. The caprese appetizer was so fresh, and the vodka sauce pasta I had was amazing. They used GF penne instead of normal pasta. Ended the night with a chocolate mousse cake that was GF as well! Some of the best Italian food I’ve had!
Delicious food but it made me sick. Might be fine for other gluten avoiders, but Celiacs, I wouldn’t trust the kitchen. The ambience is amazing during the holidays- they fill the place so full of Christmas decorations you can hardly move. Worth taking a look- just maybe not a taste!
Though they have gluten free pasta they are very unaccommodating with allergies. I had to eat gluten free pasta with oil and garlic and they tried to charge me $30 for it. Do not recommend for anyone with severe allergies.
Not celiac friendly. All food is prepared same as other food. That to me is not celiac friendly. Yes they have gluten free options but......
My husband and I are both GF. Filomena's has always been one of our favorite places and we were happy to hear they had GF options. Last night was the first time we've been there since becoming GF. Our waiter, Gino, was excellent and very knowledgeable. His daughter is GF so he completely understands. There are plenty of options. My husband had the Rigatoni Con Salsicce with GF pasta. (Roasted sweet Italian sausage, mushrooms, onions in a red sauce. )They make the sausage in house. Absolutely delicious! I had the Misto Di Mare Alla Filomena. GF pasta with shrimp, scallops, clams, mussels, calamari and shallots in a red sauce. Amazing! Portions are huge so plan on taking a lot home. Gino came by as soon as our entrees came to make sure it was GF pasta. There are 4 GF desserts - dark chocolate mousse, triple chocolate cake, 1 of the cheesecakes and the Spumoni cake. The Spumoni cake is one of our favorites! It was yummy as always. Great night and no one got sick!
I was happy they had GF PASTA, but the waiter told me the chocolate mousse was gluten free only to tell me a couple min after I started eating it to be careful of the bottom of the mousse because THAT wasn't GF. I got terribly sick. Watch out for this place. The waiters aren't knowledgeable about food allergies.
Food was good. Limited choices. Unlike the other reviewer who said all sauces but one are gluten free, I was told my choices were either Alfredo sauce or garlic and oil. My meal was ok, a bit bland given the quality of food this place churns out for non-gfree guests. I was a bit disappointed that they didn't have bread or dessert for their gluten free guests.
