Our daughter is newly diagnosed celiac so we are learning the ropes as we go... we stopped in for a bun-less cheeseburger because we've read the reviews and were hopeful it would work out - plus she loves five guys burgers. The young woman who took our order marked the order allergy and noted they'd change their gloves. While I stood in the back waiting by the grill I watched to see how they went through the steps. They did change their gloves often and changed them before prepping her aluminum dish with foil beneath it so that was great. The grill cook also changed her gloves often, however she touched the burger buns before handling the cheese that went on my daughter's burger. I had to ask them redo her burger b/c of the celiac. They were great about making a new burger and the second time they changed gloves, didn't touch any of the buns and even used cheese from a fresh stack in the refrigerator rather than the stack that had been used before.
When I requested a lettuce wrap instead of a bun for my child with celiac, the employee included a note with that burger’s order that the person it was for has a food allergy. (We dined in, and my son was so happy with his cheeseburger that he asked for a second. This time, my husband placed the order and with a different employee - the procedure was the same, which really gives me confidence that the employees are well trained in food allergies.)
Everyone is very aware of gluten cross contamination. They happily make a lettuce wrapped cheeseburger using a separate area to wrap.
I have never gotten sick from Five Guys over 10+ years, about 6 times year including this month. Only fresh potatoes in fryer so GF . They take allergy seriously and provide separate bag for GF items. No GF buns but all toppings GF and can have burger in bowl or lettuce wrap. Their hot dogs are GF. I avoid the shakes as they do oreo cookie though other ingredients GF, as risk of cross contamination.
So, I was excited to try this place after reading the reviews here & accessing the menu in this app. It was not a great experience. While ordering, I only asked a few questions & the guy looked rudely at me and acted irritated that I even asked. He knew nothing and answered vaguely. I was unsure and so stepped out of the line to not hold it up. After letting everyone else go, I came back to the counter to order last. I’d never been to this chain before so I asked pretty basic questions about the menu items, which he treated me with the same disregard, but told me the fries were the only thing fried and they only had salt or the Cajun seasoning. Seeing down the cooking station at the crumbs EVERYWHERE, I errored on the side of caution and just order a fry with salt. My daughter got a regular burger and the guy knew by this point that I needed gluten free. Well the order was made and they threw it all in the same bag, literally shoveled together. They scooped fries into the bag right on top the burger. So there lay my fries over wrapping that’s been all over that crumby table. Not wanting to chance it, I just picked a few off the top of the pile that weren’t touching. The fries had some salt/sugar blend (despite what the guy told me) and I have no idea what I ate. So ya, the employees didn’t care, were rude, and now I have a stomach ache already starting. Oh and did I mention I paid $6 for those fries?! OUCH! I won’t be back. Please be careful.
