Their new gluten free pretzel bread is AMAZING! Although the spoons used down the line are the same as used for gluten aged bread, the staff is very careful with changing gloves and using their special gluten free knife and I’ve never gotten sick! Hannah’s Bretzel is my go-to sandwich shop in Chicago, and I’m pretty obsessed.
They recently changed their GF bread, it’s leaps and bounds better! If you’ve tried it before and we’re unimpressed, go try again. One of my staples now
All sandwich ingredients are gluten-free, so anything can be made on gluten free bread. The bread was kept separate and the worker changed his gloves and made a good effort to keep everything clean.
Any sandwich can be made with a gluten free baguette for $1 more. They are already expensive to begin with but for a quick decent sized sandwich, very good! I'm not celiac but they asked me if I needed then to change their gloves. Nice!
Again, avoid this place if possible. GF products are really bad - cold, stale (even in morning when other breads you can see cooking) ,and really don't enjoy eating clumps of cold butter with my sandwich. Policy (not negotiable) is they don't heat their sandwiches. Poor servers- really have no knowledge of their products or their ingredients. Very, very sad. I did really want to like this place....but nothing redeemable.
Nice to be able to get a gfree baguette but nothing to write home about. Cool restaurant concept though...very organic / green. Maybe better if they would warm the bread a bit? Make sure you ask them to change gloves!
Sandwich was pretty good on GF bread. Place was a little pricier than I thought. Almost $30 for lunch for 2.

Staff was knowledgeable about the GF options, and stated that all sandwiches could be made GF. They are ready to change their gloves, use a fresh paper, and have a single staff member process your entire sandwich assembly, so I’m happy with the measures in place. The GF pretzel bread is unique, but I like the flavor. It’s very dense and very dry. Plan to drink a lot of water, but be glad you can eat the bread!
Reading previous reviews, it appears they’ve made some (good) changes to the gluten free baguette. I thought it was so tasty! The closest to a pretzel bun that I have had in a long time. When you order, Staff ask you if you would like them to change their gloves. They use a fresh knife to cut the bread but I believe use the same utensils down the sandwich making line which may have come in contact with regular bread. I would say sensitive celiacs need to take extra precautions ordering (a sign is posted saying they do their best but there is a risk of CC still). Sandwiches are pricey but the ingredients were so fresh and delicious, I look forward to returning.
When I said I needed gluten free bread the sandwich maker asked if I’d like her to change gloves. Yes! And I asked for a clean prep area she wiped down the entire line- impossible to get completely clean so I requested she be sure to keep the bread on the butcher paper and she was very careful to do so. She used a nice reserved for GF. The sandwich was delicious and I did not get sick at all. Chips had GF on the bag. This employee at this location was great.
First response was that only the bread was gluten free, but on my request they got new fig spread from the back and the sandwich was delicious. I agree that the bread is a little dry, but it’s yummy just the same and the sandwich ingredients are delicious. I also appreciate that the menu lists what is gluten free.
The GF bread was pretzel bread just like their regular specialty! It was not dry at all - extremely tasty. I would have been nervous that it wasn't really GF had the line worker not confirmed with me before he started my sandwich. He also changed his gloves and washed his hands. Their menu states that all sandwich toppings are GF as well. This was the best sandwich I've eaten in a VERY long time!!
I gave this restaurant to try as the idea of a gluten-free baguette sandwich sounded very tasty. I was sadly disappointed. The bread was very dry, crumbly, lacking flavor and fell apart while eating the sandwich. I also had the tomato Basil bisque. This also lacked the seasoning of a traditional tomato basil. Biggest problem that I had with the soup was the fact that in spite of me ordering gluten-free they still put their house made croutons in it, thus making the soup in edible for me. I did like the fresh, organic sandwich ingredients that they used. A little tweaking to the bread recipe is needed in order to make this a true tasty sandwich.
The gluten free baguette is terrible. It's hard, mealy, and is awful tasting. As I was eating the sandwich, chunks of bread fell off -- and I was glad! I eventually abandoned the terrible bread and just ate the filling. Really disappointing for a $14 lunch.
Ambience is on point. Staff is friendly. Food is good...I malabsorb fructose and eat low-FODMAP (which means I am a gluten-free water by default)...I ordered a chicken sandwich sans bread, it was very good. Couldn't have their gluten-free bread because they have a few ingredients that I can't eat it -- xanthan gum and honey, chief amongst them -- but I'm sure most g-free eaters would handle their bread just fine. The place is worthwhile, imo. I love their commitment to sustainability, and the food tastes good, even with not having everything in the sandwich most ppl choose to eat. Recommended.
A lot of times I have an issue with getting gf buns, etc bc the toppings to bread ratio is all off bc the gf bun is way thicker than the wheat bun. However, at Hannah's Bretzel the gf baguette was equal to the wheat baguette my husband got. It was great! The food was delicious and I tasted the sandwich, not the bread.
I love this place! Hannah's Bretzel offers the best gluten free sandwich bread I've ever had in my four years since finding out I have Celiac — and I've tried a lot. I kid you not, I cried when I first tried their gf pesto mozzarella sandwich. I'm obsessed. I've learned recently that they freeze their bread, which makes sense because gluten free bread probably doesn't have the same demand as normal bread. However, in my opinion, that hasn't ever affected the taste of the bread. Sometimes, the sandwich is just a bit chilled. My only gripe is that they use the same utensils on spreads, but I've noticed they never touch the utensil to the bread — gf or regular. I am extremely sensitive and have never gotten sick at any of the locations!
This place must be one of the worst gluten free places I have been to. Their gluten free breads are not fresh - cold, taken out of a plastic container and tastes stale - even first thing in the morning. They also refuse to heat them (policy is not to heat their products - no exceptions) to at least make it half palatable. The server was trying to spread cold butter on to the bun. Actually, he was not initially trying to spread it, until I asked. He was basically going to provide me with a cold stale gluten free bun with cubes of cold butter and some salmon. What it turned out to be was not much better as the butter was still in clumps. The non-gf products I saw were not much better. Not sure who gave this place a high rating, but poor guys - their food is disgusting.
I soo wanted to love this place. All of their sandwiches are available on a gluten free "baguette," everyone on the line changed their gloves with no complaint, they use grass fed beef and wild caught salmon, they have kettle-cooked chips, everything is organic, they have a nice selection of organic and non-HFCS drinks and you get to pick a piece of chocolate at the cashier. But alas, Hannah's Bretzel turned out to be a huge disappointment. I ordered the grass fed sirloin with gruyere cheese, carmelized onions, horseradish, lettuce and tomato with salt and pepper chips and a bottle of Lorina's pink lemonade, all of which came to just under $15. The gluten free "baguette" is much more like a sub roll. It's just okay - if it was filled with delicious ingredients it would have been fine for delivering a sandwich experience but its not something I would eat on its own or anything and was pretty bland. As for the fillings - the carmelized onions were WAY too sweet and there were way too many of them. They were the only thing I could taste. About half way through I gave up and pulled apart the sandwich to check out the ingredients. The gruyere was really mild - barely tasted anything when I ate it alone. The beef was very mild in flavor as well. I saw what looked like horseradish on the bread and meat, but didn't taste even a hint of horseradish anywhere. There was no sign of any kind of seasoning on the meat. Finally, I feel like a beef and cheese sandwich like this would benefit from being served warm. Oh, the salt and pepper chips were toooo peppery. The piece of chocolate and bottle of lemonade were the best parts of the meal.
