I've been coming to HuHut since I was diagnosed 8 years ago. And have always had amazing service, from getting food out of the kitchen to scraping the grill, the addition of dividers and separate spatulas.
Today 6/27/23 I was told that they couldn't pull my. Order out of the bins in the back or scrap the grill, use dividers etc. Per corporate... This has always been my go to restaurant and I always get safe. I was told that the heat on the grill is supposed to kill everything. I can tell you it does not. I got cross contaminated.
HuHut I'm very disappointed
HuHot does not have a gluten free menu but does have an allergen list and a list of gluten free sauces. Ask them to clean a spot on the grill and use different utensils, if necessary.
They have some bowls they will give you to notify the cooks that you have an allergy. They thoroughly scrubbed the grill and blocked off with spatulas to be sure. I didn’t get sick! Be cautious as the waitress said all the sauces were gf and then brought me the allergy menu. Most sauces had wheat in them but not gluten.
The staff was very knowledgeable and helpful. The waitress brought me special colored bowls in order to alert the chefs that I had an allergy. At the grill, they vigorously scrubbed a portion of it and placed spatulas around my food. Their nutritional information for their sauces are on their website. It was very good.
The process was a little confusing at first but worked out great in the end. It would have been a 5 start but I had to wait awhile for service and the rest of my party eat without me. There was confusion about whether I ordered at the table but then I was told that I go to the line and someone would meet me and walk me through the fresh topping containers to avoid all cross contamination. They put me in line quickly at grill station and cleaned the grill super well. I was super impressed! Those guys work hard and did a great job cleaning it. I enjoyed my meal and had no issues or sickness. I would eat there again!
Staff were very helpful when I told them I had Celiac disease. I was immediately given a menu with the food allergens of each ingredient, a yellow bowl which designated I had a food allergy, and personal assistance from the staff as I assembled my bowl. When I got to the grill, they thoroughly scrubbed the grill and checked with me to ensure I was comfortable with the cleanliness. The food was perfectly cooked and very tasty. I had no ill effects from contamination. I would recommend this restaurant to others with similar conditions.
very knowledgeable, always willing to clean the grill for me when I come in with no fuss!!!! love this place!!
being 14 years old and gluten free I enjoyed the noodles and drinks!
This is one of the best examples of cross-contamination. They have sauces that people can slop and combine with different ladles, and the labels were very confusing. The grill was cleaned off, which we appreciated, but each one of us were given someone else’s meal at the end of the line, if you are truly celiac, do not eat here.
This review only pertains to their Buffet style meal option. I did not order anything else from their menu (other than rice and a glass of water).
PROS:
- Good variety of meats, Veggies, and sauces.
- Gluten-free sauces are labeled.
- You can request allergy bowls (These are a different color and stand out from the standard black bowls). Cooks will see these bowls as you bring them to the counter and will prepare a space to cook your meal. This includes heavy scrubbing and cleaning of the space and a new set of cooking paddles to mix your food and to act as shielding from other gluten containing foods cooking next to yours.
- You are in charge of gathering and constructing your own food (much like a salad bar) and can assure the foods you are selecting are gluten free.
- The service is great and accommodating.
CONS:
- All foods and sauces are presented Buffet style, and Gluten-free foods will be placed directly next to gluten containing foods. You are 100% putting yourself at the mercy of other customers and their ability to keep their utensils/food from contaminating others.
- Your food will be cooked less than a foot away from other gluten containing meals.
- The extra paddles that are used to mix only your food are the same paddles used to shield other's foods from mixing with yours. This is problematic. Their method of cleaning the cooking surface will most likely send particulates directly into your paddles. Also, if another customer has a very sauce heavy meal, it is possible this could run and come into contact with your paddles.
***The TLDR***
There are measures in place to provide gluten-free/allergy sensitive options for customers... but the execution falls short of hitting the mark. I have personally been here twice and have gotten sick each time. I would not recommend the buffet style option for someone with celiac disease.
I was given a special colored bowl to signify an allergy so they were aware ahead of time to clean off the grill space for me. My section of the grill was also segregated so no other food touched it and clean utensils were used for my food only. I also felt safe knowing if I felt anything in the ingredient line felt suspect for cross contact I could ask for fresh untouched from the back (which I did for the sauce).
Asked at the table if there were allergies then brought me a yellow bowl and the allergy menu so I could double check everything.
There’s a risk of cross contamination on the buffet part, but they cleaned a section of the grill and put up a barricade, washed hands, used clean tools on my meal.
I’m allergic to milk and wheat, so dessert is usually off my menu, but they have s’mores and the manager brought me a little bowl of marshmallows :)
