my one-hour-after report: some bloating, no pain. I would guess there was some cross contamination, less than 30ppm. Enough for extremely mild symptoms. I would not consider this a glutening. Or perhaps just a mild glutening.
I was very impressed with Ike's. When I ordered, I told them I had a gluten allergy and they prepped my food separately on an identifying tray, which was great. They also used new gloves and ingredients from separate bins. All of the vegan meats are gluten, so I subbed vegan Turkey for regular on the Pilgrim, and had the turmeric cardamom peach lemon lemonade which was really nice! A very Bay Area experience for sure. They also gave me a TON of napkins with my order which i very appreciated. They are large napkins for a restaurant.
Parking is street and it's paid.
The vibe of Ike's is good-- mostly tall chairs but three low tables, so my service dog and I took a low one. They played an eclectic collection of music (Queen back to back with Snoop Dogg).
It's a very open space with floor to ceiling windows.
The employees are friendly and accommodating. My total order was $21 which is a bit steep for a sandwich and drink, but hey it's gluten free right?
The bathroom is a working bathroom. The appearance and features are abysmal. The floor was not dirty but it wasn't clean either. No hook on the door, no surface to put anything down on, and the trash was overflowing. It smelled fine. The code is 1194.
I did get mildly glutened here, but it was partially my own fault for forgetting to tell them it was an allergy (they usually ask at other locations, but didn't here). I am assuming they would be more careful with that information, but I would still say that it's not celiac safe. The gf bread was delicious as always (they get it from Mariposa).
All gluten free sandwiches get made on a dedicated station to minimize cross contamination. They're very careful, but it's still not celiac friendly. Great sandwiches though, I love the Pilgrim!
I think they changed their GF bread and it’s WAY better. The other one looked really good but the taste was super bland and the texture was too tough. The last sandwich I had, both taste and texture were way better (very soft) and it definitely looked different. They’ve got a separate prep station for allergy orders, you can even indicate allergy easily through mobile order on their app. They send the sandwich through the same roller oven, but place it on an aluminum foil boat for allergy orders. Great sandwiches!
Incredible! The staff here is amazing and took care of us on multiple days of our vacation. Washed down the prep station, knew the allergy protocol. Had a list of ingredients and you do have to look them up. All of the sandwich’s came with dirty sauce which show GF but we left off to be careful. The buns are incredible. Anything through the toaster is on foil and safe. Thank you! For an amazing experience!
Ike’s is always my favorite when I am in California. They do an exceptional job making sandwiches that are gluten-free. The bread they use is really good. They wrap sandwiches in foil before they send them into the toaster to prevent cross contamination. Going home for Thanksgiving is my favorite.
