I am so bummed that I have to give this place a bad rating. The food is amazing but unfortunately I have tried eating here a few times and I have had a bad reaction every time. I have celiac and I can't keep trying. Some of the items that are listed GF are actually not for sure GF. I was getting the egg rolls every time I went as they are labeled GF and I kept wondering why I wasn't feeling well after eating them. Last time we went, the manager told me they aren't sure if the oyster sauce in the egg rolls are gluten free and that it wasn't safe for me to eat if I am celiac. WHY would you label it that way if you aren't sure??? So I ended up eating the wide rice noodles and STILL got sick! I wonder if there is a questionable ingredient in those as well??? So disappointing.
Amazing flavors, friendly staff but sadly it has not been a safe eating experience. I have tried eating there a number of times and have experienced mild to severe glutening symptoms during/after about 50% of our visits. I finally had to give up. No matter how tasty the food is, it just wasn't worth it. There are several other restaurants in Portland that we eat at regularly and safely.
The manager (or owner?) was very knowledgeable about gluten-free food and what I could eat on their menu - which was a lot! Most of what we had was amazing, and this is exactly what I wanted, awesome gluten-free Asian food. Everything was super fresh and super tasty. I don't know how the food is prepared in the back, but it seemed like they understand what to do and how to make everything safe. They even have gluten-free desserts! I would definitely come back to Sellwood, OR just to go here. If you can find a place on the patio, you should do it, it's beautiful outside! http://celiacandthebeast.com/2012/07/gluten-free-travel-portlandia-part-4-jade-tea-house/
I thought it was okay. We over ordered so we got a good sampling of the appetizers, noodles, salad and curry catfish. If this was not a gluten free restaurant it would be a mediocre Asian fusion restaurant. The chicken wings had too much sauce. The papaya salad was good. My daughter loved the calamari as this is something she can no longer eat at a regular restaurant. This is definitely no Pok Pok but good for people who wants a GF Asian fix.
