I was so happy to find out that Jersey Mike’s is serving Udi’s bread now! The bread comes prepackaged, I was asked if my GF selection was based on an allergy or preference, the employees changed their gloves, and my sandwich was made on a sheet of parchment to reduce risk of cross contamination. I haven’t had a true sub sandwich in 7 years and this was magic!
I was encouraged to see that the shop now offered a gluten free bun. I was also hopeful that the bun would be better quality than the Udi’s hotdog and hamburger buns. Unfortunately, this is just a large version of these other dismal buns. The staff was thoughtful and changed gloves and took precautions against contamination so they rate a 5. The bun however crumbled like a dry sand castle (with similar taste). After one bite there was just a big pile of meat and tomatoes and I had to finish with a knife and fork - leaving the “sand pile” in the trash.
Tried a few other local locations and had very bad experiences. Heard from another person with CD that this location was very good so I decided to give it a try. What a great experience!!! Adam was so wonderful and took every precaution possible to make sure my sandwich was as safe as possible. It was delicious. But most of all....it was so nice to have someone treat me so positively. As many of you already know, so many times we are looked at like we have two heads or something when we ask about gluten free. So to have someone cheerfully take care of me.....it actually brought tears to my eyes. This will definitely be my go to place for a sandwich!!
Amazing service with a very friendly attitude. The staff do not act like it is an inconvenience at all to clean the slicing machines or area around at all. They get sub stuff from the back. The subs are good normal sub size too. I have been there twice and have not been sick. I have celiac and get sick very easy. Comfortable eating here. So nice to have a great sub.
Agree, I stopped at 1 location in the western suburbs of Chicago, GREAT JOB on cleaning, prep etc. Very knowledgeable but its too much bread and its dry. I too would like a different option. Still, in an emergency at least its an option!
I’ve only been once since they offered GF, and was disappointed that they use Udi’s rolls. The roll was dry and gross. The staff did seem knowledgeable, but I’d love a different bread option- there are more to choose from. The 3 stars are for the friendly service, clean store, and having an option!
Yes they have gluten free bread and do a good job wiping tools down to prevent cross contamination. What annoys me is that after 2 different meals, on 2 different occasions - I was just as hungry as I felt before eating the subs! Same feeling after Philly cheese and tuna! I wonder if it's because their bread with gluten fills you up so they don't give you as much in between slices? It looked like enough, especially of the Philly steak... Nevertheless I won't spend more money on food that doesn't give me the protein and calories I need to feel full. I will also check their website to see if they tell us where the meat and veggies come from....
I eat at flemington store and they have clean knife and mat. Today I ate at this place and they did not use new knife or any mat at all. I also did not see where the bread came from and guess what sick as hell now!!! I should of known better do not go here
They are extremely careful about cleaning the spaces, using a different cutting board and surface to prepare the sandwich. It is even good the next day and the bread wasn’t soggy!!!! If you ask they’ll get you fresh toppings from underneath the counter. They fresh cut the meats, clean the slicer, and change their gloves!
Went there during a middle school dance while all the kids had pizza. I and one middle school student were the only GF eaters. I asked her if I could get her a sandwich and we took a chance. When I informed the men behind the counter that I had an order with two gluten allergies, they went into total GF mode! The prep area was cleaned, all three mentioned GF sandwiches, and paper went down on the prep area. A clean knife appeared and traveled with the sandwiches. Nathan, the cashier, was quite knowledgeable about gluten allergies, as were the two gentlemen making the sandwiches. Not once did I get an eye roll or attitude at the extra steps/precautions they had to take- on a busy night too. It was great to have a sub after almost 4 years. Neither I, or the student had a reaction, so I will definitely be back! Udi's rolls, only one size, and $1.50 more- but TOTALLY worth it to me! My hats off to the guys there 💜!
Amazing! Haven’t had a sub like this since diagnosed Celiac. The staff was extremely gluten conscious, and even explained to someone else why they had to take their time to make my sub. Fresh gloves, fresh paper, fresh utensils and great food. Highly recommended!
they completely clean everything. They do a great job of eliminating cross-contamination. I talk to someone in line that has celiacs, she has eaten here several times and has had no reaction. the bread tastes good as well. Obviously the cross-contamination will not be completely eliminated but I was impressed by what they did.
I've been to multiple Jersey Mike's without issue. I am extremely sensitive to gluten, so I appreciate being able to eat good subs again. Today I had an experience with a trainee who started to use the regular mayo (gluten free toppings are in a special area). The other employees immediately stopped her and walked her through the process of making a gluten free sub, stressing the importance of no cross contamination. If they didn't have my business already, this sealed the deal. Thank you to the Pelican Square staff!
Great cross contamination practices and no one got sick. The bread is in its own pack, they use a different prep area, change gloves and clean the slicer. The only things I would avoid are mayo, as they only have one spreader (they may have packs) and the grill is the same if you get cheeesteaks. Not a problem for me, but for my celiac wife, not so much
The staff was very accommodating. Just make sure that you tell them you’re celiac (if you are), that it’s for medical reasons, and that you can’t have any cross contamination at all. Then they’ll take toppings from the back. I was pretty worried that I was going to be contaminated, not gonna lie. Lots of bread pieces flying around.
WOW!!! Great place! First off, the staff completed the guests food in front of me the cleaned and wiped everything down with a food grade cleaning solution. Then everyone changed gloves, grabbed new utensils. Next the staff grabbed a piece of parchment paper for sandwich prep, then proceeded to slice the meat and cheese, apply it to the Udi brand GF factory sealed sub roll (that they opened in front of me) and used different condiments containers! For a sub shop serving traditional breads on a day to day basis, they could not have done a better job! Bravo. I did feel bad about the people behind me who had to wait a few minutes, but it gave me a chance to talk to them about gluten allergies.
The staff was very helpful and my sandwich was delicious. They took cross contamination precautions - washed the slicer, switched gloves, and grabbed fresh condiments. Just remember to specifically ask for fresh ingredients as there is cross contamination when topping sandwiches. Overall a great experience. If I was local, I would revisit.
I asked about making the sandwich in a different location and he said they do and I saw him change his gloves, so that part was good, but when he came out of the back he only had the bread, cheese, and meat. Then he put my sandwich (with paper) down on a cutting board that was covered in oil and vinegar and had tons of bread crumbs and started to make my sandwich with the same toppings they were using with regular bread. So I pointed that out and he said he didn’t think of that, and I asked for him to re-make it and he did in the back. He even changed his gloves again after touching the contaminated toppings. He was very nice about it! But anyone who is sensitive to cross contamination needs to watch this place very closely. After all of that it was just okay. The Udi’s bread is flavorless and dry, but being able to eat a sandwich was nice. I didn’t get sick though, so that was a plus!
Awesome.... long time since I had a sub!
Staff wiped down the counters and changed gloves all without asking for it. The staff was very friendly and helpful. They use Udi’s for the sub bread, and there was $1.50 charge for GF. First time eating at Jersey Mike’s, and I would come back.
I walked into Jersey Mike’s and very politely told them that I had celiac disease and would love to try one of their GF subs. Immediately before I could say anything else; the lady reached straight for a roll of GF bread without changing her gloves, cleaning the counter space workstation or the deli meat slicer. I very politely told her that I would be unable to eat the cross contaminated sandwich she was starting to prepare and asked if she could please do the all the above. She acted as if I was a total inconvenience to her. I should also add that my husband and I were the only ones in line to be served. The second time around, she still didn’t understand that the station needed to be clean and the toppings needed to be fresh from the back. I thanked her for her time and we left without sandwiches. Was really looking forward to giving it a try, but unfortunately we won’t be returning to this location.
I'm so excited to have another gluten free sandwich option in the area! So far, I've gotten their gluten free veggie sub twice. Even though they don't toast it, the bread is softer than I was expecting and holds together well. The oil, vinegar, and herbs add really good flavor!
