Staff very knowledgeable about Celiac. I asked for a gluten free menu and they asked if I had Celiac. No GF menu, but they knew what was acceptable. Double checked ingredient book to make sure.
Walked into this place on a whim and so glad we did! Originally our choice for bbq was Sticky Fingers. This fine app referenced their gluten free menu and what not. But something just felt too commercial about the place. So after a drink and a quick google search we headed to Nicks Original BBQ on King St. Nothing on their website said anything about gluten free so we were rolling the dice. Upon grabbing a menu and heading to the counter to order (walk up order system and then they bring the food out to your table) my wife got the pulled chicken and smoked turkey plate and asked for them to hold the cheese biscuit that it came with. The girl at the counter then asked if my wife had an allergy to gluten? Why yes, yes she does! And BAM! Out from behind the counter comes this little slice of gluten free menu heaven. With the sauce ingredients listed on it also! The bbq was fantastic! Brisket was tender, ribs were not fall off the bone, more of a bite off the bone but i prefer them that way. My wife's chicken and turkey was irrationally moist and tender and juicy and i didn't understand how? Damn good. The sauces were made in house and tasted that way. No thick corn syrupy goop.
Only thing gluten free was plain bbq and salad, but be sure to ask without croutons, the biscuits they put on the side, and shredded cheese. Didn't feel like they knew exactly what gluten was or was in.
No gluten free menu. Staff and manager was very knowledgable of GF needs. Asked the manager what I could eat and he pointed out options. Got a burger without the bun. Said any of the meats and sauces were GF. Very helpful staff.
One of my safe places in the 'boro. Most of the items are gluten free and made from scratch. Friendly about questions and helpful in selections. Plus, I have never had a bad meal here. No gf buns but you wont miss them. Plenty safe things to eat. They do not have a gluten free menu but I have found they are more than willing to help me pick out what is safe.
Told them I couldn't have gluten and they asked whether I had celiac (I do). They were able to advise me regarding their selections, including BBQ sauces. Much of their menu was GF, and I got a delicious grilled catfish and watermelon. Very helpful, and their menu online also points out their many GF offerings. Definitely recommend.
Had a lovely dinner with my boyfriend at this location. I simply told the hostess that I have food allergies and she sent the Kitchen Manager right to our table. He suggested the Smoked Turkey ( with NO WHITE SAUCE!), I got that with a Baked Potato and Fresh Fruit (which was watermelon). It was all delicious, and the portion sizes were great. *Caution on the Turkey* They do use a rub on the Turkey Breast and I noticed a while later I did get the normal itchy "Celiac Rash" that occurs sometimes on my arms. Visited the location again and got the Smoked Ham with no problems at all 😊
So good! They gave me the allergen menu so I could make the best decision and the waiter seemed to be quite knowledgeable. I had a two meat plate with the pulled pork and sliced turkey breaks, French fries and fresh fruit. I am the only one in my family that is gluten free so the waiter asked if it was ok to bring the biscuits to the table. That is always a win in my book since so many people don't think to ask.
You can almost get anything gluten free here but check out the on-line menu in advance.https://www.jimnnicks.com/assets/Food-Allergens-List-12-1-2016.pdfThe server doesn't always know but the kitchen does because I have eaten many times and never been glutened. My favorite is the bbq turkey plate with french fries and sweet potato casserole (which on the on-line menu says it has gluten but at this restaurant it does not - it is a Sun. special side)
Just make sure you confirm EVERY order and stand your ground with food servers. We did fine when dining in, but the first and last time we ever tried ordering out, EVERY item was packaged with a piece of bread, rendering it completely inedible and, in fact, dangerous for my wife with her Celiac. This was despite my going on and on about how careful they needed to be with our order. They got careless and lost us as a customer. My wife simply doesn't trust them and refuses to go ever again. Their carelessness betrayed her trust and the won't ever get it back.
Pros: extremely friendly staff. Very clear allergen list. Cons: despite ordering very carefully based on the allergen list. And despite our server noting my wife's celiac on the order. And despite them reassuring us they have separate prep space etc, she had a terrible reaction 30 min after we left the restaurant. It's a shame because the food and service is great, but not worth the risk for us again.
Maybe this place is OK for people that are GF WITHOUT Celiacs, but NOT OK for Celiacs. Menu and wait staff advised French Fries were Gf and cooked in separate fryer. Sadly, there were pieces of fried chicken in my fries which I didn't notice until I was more than halfway through. NOT OK FOR CELIACS!!!!!!
Friday was my 3rd time going to Jim N Nicks. imagine my surprise when the gf menu was 1/3 the size it used to be, they no longer have a dedicated fryer either. on top of that, my son and I are sick from eating here, I can only pay he doesn't get a seizure and heals before school starts next week. Very disappointed to lose one of the few places my family thought we could trust.
Our favorite BBQ place! A little on the pricy side, but it is soooo good. The ONLY place even remotely close to me that has gluten free BBQ (and I live an hour away). We don't get to eat here much, but when we're in Concord, we usually come here. Staff is always friendly and the food is great. Went here Friday before a concert. Decided on the half chicken with potato salad and bbq beans. Let me just say that the chicken is absolutely amazing. The best place I had ever had chicken was Texas Roadhouse. But I'd say they definitely have some competition. The chicken was so moist that it was falling off the bone. It's melt in your mouth good. My husband really loves their burgers. He says they're the best he's ever had. Do beware that everything listed as GF on their menu actually isn't. If you have Celiac, stay away from the fries and chips. They are listed as GF, but they're cooked in a shared fryer. The potato salad is really good, and their bbq beans have chunks of pulled pork in them. Yum! Love coming here!
Great food. The meats were well cooked and flavorful. They gave us the list of things that contain gluten and they were all obvious items like buns, flour tortillas, etc. One disappointment is the potato chips and tortilla chips are done in a shared frier. Will definitely go back. Especially because kid meal was great price - $3 with drink so we got our 6 year old a double portion and they charge d $5. now they just need to create gf cheese biscuits and desserts.
The manager Chris Reeder was AMAZING and very knowledgeable! Our 3 year old has Celiac and is a very picky eater. Chris cooked all of our son's food himself and they do have a dedicated frier for GF food. My son was able to eat fried catfish!!! Chris gave us a bag of the catfish fry to take home with us. Our waitress Trish was fabulous as well! She was very attentive and really cared about my son. We will definitely be back here often :)
Great food! This place rocks GF! When traveling it is always hard to find GF places that you can truly have a family meal that everyone likes, but this place is just that. They have a gluten free print out when you ask. The sauce is GF, most of the meats, and plenty of the "trimmings"! Would stop here again if we ever find our selves in Memphis again.
Very in depth allergen list. They made BBQ without the original sauce that has gluten. they do not have a dedicated space, but offered to separate where they make my plate to help me. I didn't get sick.. if a dedicated spot would give 5 stars and add celiac friendly.
We went to Jim N Nicks this evening and Jason the manager was awesome. I asked the waitress about gluten free options, she went to get the manager and when he came out the first asked if I had Celiac or an allergy. As soon as I said Celiac he listed everything that was available to me. And yes their fries are in a dedicated fryer. After he discussed my options he went to the cooks and let them know my needs. He was very knowledgable and I felt like this was not a pain like some places make you feel. He told us that they have different cutting boards they can use, change their gloves etc. I was really impressed with their compassion, knowledge and willingness to make every effort to make my dinner enjoyable.
The fryer is used only for fries, and so the fries are GF, which was the most amazing discovery when I was pregnant, and craved fries. Their BBQ sauce is GF, and so you can quickly get a plate of BBQ pulled pork, smoked turkey, or BBQ brisket and be completely safe. The baked beans, the coleslaw, and quite a few of their side dishes are perfectly safe by their ingredient list. And when you tell the host(ess) you are GF, you will get a little informal print out telling you what is safe to eat. I've never been glutened there. The food is very yummy.
