This restaurant is mind blowing and a true gem in Portland. Sometimes I come every month because it’s so good. It’s 100% GF and dairy free. The ambience is wonderful for date night or a special occasion. Food is top notch and rotates each season. It’s really not that hard to get a reservation if you jump on it the day reservations are released each month.

I’ve tried to get a reservation for a year and it was well worth the wait. Incredible dining experience especially for a gluten free gal. Eating at kann is an experience to be savored. The Haitian inspired food from Chef Gregory Gourdet pays tribute to his home country and incorporates seasonal PNW local flare. The staff were very knowledgeable in the ingredients and shared that they use gluten free wheat flour in some of their menu items, stating the items that were not safe for those allergic to wheat. They also stated that they serve beer that is not gluten free. Other than those couple of items, everything else is gluten free. Kann offers an epic gluten free dining experience. I hope I can get a reservation again soon.

Initially excited to dine at Kann, recommended by friends as a gluten-free facility, I looked forward to a rare restaurant experience given my wheat allergy. However, our excitement turned to disappointment upon arrival. Despite Kann's claim of being gluten-free, they use de-glutened wheat in many dishes, which they failed to mention on their website or allergen FAQs. While we understand the distinction between gluten-free and wheat-free, it's concerning to encounter a restaurant that incorporates wheat products without upfront disclosure, especially for diners with severe dietary restrictions like celiac or grain allergies.
They also serve wheat based spirits and beers.
Kann offers iconic Haitian dishes and spices and the live-fire preparations are a nod to barbecue’s origins in Haiti. The food is also seasonal and highlights year-round Pacific Northwest bounty, from local vegetables to fruits, meat, and sustainable seafood. The entire menu is gluten-free and dairy-free, and a full vegan menu is available. The opening menu includes dishes like Akra (these crispy taro root fritters are an iconic Haitian starter), Griyo Twice Cooked Pork (the national dish of Haiti, served with fried green plantains and pikliz), Smoked Beef Rib with Ti Malice (Haitian coffee and spice-rubbed, slow cooked), Peanut Creamed Greens (collards slow cooked with spiced tomato and peanut; honoring the enslaved West Africans who were brought to Haiti by the French), and Grilled Pineapple Upside Down Cake (a Haitian dessert classic).
Kann’s beverage program is rooted in creating an inclusive experience for all guests, whether they consume alcohol or not. The restaurant offers classic and innovative riffs on cocktails featuring fruits, spices, and flavors of the Caribbean alongside a robust No Proof menu. Kann’s wine list spotlights natural and Oregon-made bottles and a list of local craft beers.
Kann lives up to the substantial hyperbole about it. I have been twice. Excellent GF and DF food and they ask if you have any additional food allergies when you are seated. They also have a vegan menu. The downside of Kann is that it is extremely popular, reservation only with no take out. Reservations open a month at a time and the entire month is booked up in minutes. So, good luck getting a reservation. But if you can get in, it is well worth it.

I finally tried Kann after seeing lots of hype in the press in the last few months, and I'm really happy to say it lived up to my (high) expectations! The staff was really friendly and helpful in terms of suggesting how much to order and giving details on the dishes and drinks. The food was all so interesting and flavorful, with plenty of spice and tropical flavors, and it's clear that this restaurant is a labor of love. I really enjoyed having lots of non alcoholic drink options, but the regular cocktails looked great too. There were lots of standout dishes (the octopus and red cabbage mains were very different and both fantastic!), but perhaps the most amazing thing to me was the plantain brioche rolls - a must-order if you miss good bread as much as I do, and truly amazing that they are gluten free. Such a great meal, and I'm looking forward to trying the basement bar sometime soon too! (Apparently it has a completely different menu, so even more gluten free options to try.)
Reservations seem a bit cut throat at the moment, so if you want a guaranteed table I'd recommend planning ahead (reservations are released a month+ out, with details on the process on their instagram). I recommend the chef's counter if you have a small party! A great view of the kitchen and the wood hearth.

Everything was incredible and inspired. I particularly loved the butterfish with green apple shave ice. A wild combo, but massively flavorful.

By far, this is the best restaurant I’ve ever been to. I have celiac and a soy intolerance and could eat anything on the menu. The chef designed the menu to cater to “distinctive diets.” https://blog.resy.com/2022/08/kann-gregory-gourdet/

Amazing food! Cooked and spiced to perfection! Everything is gluten free. The non-alcoholic strawberry shrub was amazing. My favorite dish was the peanut greens.

This is one of the best meals I can remember having, from the appetizers to the drinks through the main courses and dessert. All dedicated gf. Remarkable to be able to order family style and share with non-gf folks. Beautiful and understated interior, open preparation, and a delightful, engaging staff - truly a special experience!
