Staff was so knowledgeable on gluten allergy. Their chips are fried in a shared fryer so don’t eat if you are celiac. They went above and beyond to make sure we got the right food and that special care was taken for our food. The head chef came to our table to talk to us and explained the care they take our gluten allergies and answered any questions we had. All of the fajitas are 100% gluten free (the steak was our fav) and they come with corn tortillas. The fajitas were out of this world delicious! They made any special accommodations they could so our kids could get food they wanted - ex. Quesadilla on corn tortillas. We will definitely be back!
Staff knowledgeable, items with gluten marked on menu, I have Celiac and eat here all the time without issues.
Spoke to the chef personally, and she told me that the chips are GF and most things are GF. So, far so good ... The only reason for the 4 stars is I just got home and not sure of the reaction. Time will only tell.
We ordered my son grilled chicken, rice and corn tortillas. It was yummy. They don't have a dedicated fryer, so no chips:(
I specifically told my waiter that I needed my dish (tortilla soup) to be gluten free for a celiac, and he assured me that he would take care of it. Typically they leave out the tortilla strips that have been fried in the same fryer as other food. After I started eating my soup, I realized that it had the contaminated tortilla strips at the bottom. When I started asked questions. It turned out that the waiter had never told the kitchen. The manager came over and profusely apologized, but unfortunately, it was too late at that point. I was sick for several days afterward.
Best Tex-Mex restaurant in Houston. I love Lupe Tortilla because a) the bean dip & salsa are both gluten free and b) the beef fajitas are gluten free. Just make sure to order corn tortillas. I go to Lupe Tortilla a lot and have never had a problem eating here.
Menu is mostly GF, and anything that HAS gluten is noted. Beef fajitas typically have gluten due to soy sauce in the marinade, but Lupe Tortillas are gluten free-yay! it's a bit pricey but worth is to enjoy beef fajitas and delicious homemade corn tortillas. They will also sub tortillas with large pieces of romaine lettuce to create a "taco" if you request them.
I've never had an issue here. I get green chicken enchiladas and fajitas with corn tortillas. The corn tortillas are the best I've ever had.
I have eaten Mexican food in many countries in the world. Even in Mexico City, I’ve been able to have a very nice and tasty Mexican menu customized to my several food allergies, it’s not too complicated, just a clean pan and the good will, Mexican food is celiac friendly food! I never imagine that here in US, where there’s enough information about how to handle special diet clients I was going to experience such a rude discrimination and even worst from the restaurant manager! We came to your restaurant at Katy just because Trip Advisor states that this is a gluten-free options place, but this wasn’t true - confirmed by the person in charge of the restaurant who didn’t make any effort to even try to accommodate my needs. What was I asking?! Grilled veggies with no lemon, chicken o shrimp with no wheat marinated sauce ... I would’ve been please with a guacamole made from scratch (no lemon) so I could share our Sunday’s Lunch with my familia ... BUT to that simple request He answered that the guacamole was already prepared ... he didn’t even want to take a $1 avocado and serve it ... I held my tears, not my anger because we has so rude :( He firmly said that that is not a celiac safe place
I was a little bit worried about cross contamination because it’s so busy and the kitchen must be slammed. However, I’ve been twice in the past couple of months and didn’t have an issue either time. I played it safe and I didn’t eat any chips or dip. I ordered the steak fajitas, but didn’t get tortillas. They say the corn tortillas are GF, but I’m concerned about the possibility of cross contamination with those. The server wasn’t the most knowledgeable off the top of his head, but checked with the kitchen on a few questions and got back to me with answers (which is what I prefer instead of acting like they know when they really don’t). All around, I had great food and service both times I went. I will gladly go back.
We called ahead and talk to the manager to make sure they could accommodate my daughter who has multiple food allergies. He mentioned that there was seasoning with soy in the rice but that was all. Turns out they fry all the chips and soy as well as use it in their marinades and with most of their meat. So with both gluten and soy as well as other allergies, it was very hard for us to eat here. The baked chips really weren't very good as others have stated. Overall, the food was fine but the process of trying to determine what was safe took so long that we probably would not eat here again.
Great food and it’s great to know almost whole menu is gluten free. They say the chips and salsa/beans are gluten free, but I had some issues that evening. I don’t usually have issues after eating there, but I did have some issues this time, so I will be more careful next time, as may have some cross-contamination for that part of the meal. ******Update 8-18-18 I asked if they could baked corn chips like I had received at another Mexican restaurant and they said they could. I did have to wait about 5-10 min, but so worth the wait. I had no issues at all with cross-contamination at all today, because of this small request. Staff still very helpful and attentive to making sure a safe meal.
Excellent service, but the menu isn’t very straight forward. The way it’s marked, you think nearly entire menu is gluten free. However, that’s not the case. I assumed the chips were safe and they were not, you have to request baked tortilla chips. Just ask the necessary questions and don’t get lax.
Great restaurant!! One of my favorite places. I eat the queso with taco meat, corn tortillas, beef fajitas and flan. Don’t eat the chips unless they are baked. Love the beans, salsa and rice. They are always very accommodating.
The food was excellent and authentic. The menu is extensive and creative. Nice atmosphere. After telling the waiter I have Celiac, the manager came out to explain their protocols and let me know that the owner’s daughter has Celiac. The place was packed at lunch time which indicates its popularity. I would definitely eat here again.
Best Fajitas I have ever had. The C.E.O’s wife is celiac. They went to great efforts to make sure I didn’t get sick. They cleaned the grill to make my corn tortillas which also have gluten free flour in them. Amazing service! Attentive server and management. The chips and bean dip that comes with them are not gluten free. However the refried beans are safe. They make a huge effort to make most of the menu gluten free anyway but when they know you have an allergy they are even more careful! I’m so glad I went here. Get the steak fajitas! Or the chicken or shrimp but at least try the steak fajitas. Best decision I could have made! Enjoy!
My favorite place for Mexican food! Gf items are marked on the normal menu. I usually take the beef fajitas with corn tortillas (which are amazing!) and replace the beans (not gf) for black beans (gf). The regular chips are not gf because they use the same fryer. But you can ask for the gf chips that they prepare in the oven. It takes a bit longer to get them (usually they arrive at the same time with your order or just a bit earlier) but they are really tasty! Again, the beans for the chips is not gf but the salsa is ok.
I absolutely LOVE Lupe Tortilla!!! I could eat their bean dip as the main entree. I always order beef & chicken fajitas on corn tortillas. Most menu items should be gluten free - just ask for corn tortillas. Only down side is that this location is small so you have to wait to be seated and service is not always great at this location.
I have eaten here many times and the food is always delicious; however, each time I have gone, I have been told something different. One time I was told they could make some GF chips by baking them; the next time, I was told they could not do so since the GF chips would get mixed with those that were not GF. Also, in the many times I have eaten here and expressed to the manager that I and my children were GF for medical reasons (not just a preference), we have always ordered rice and beans as our sides. However, yesterday I was told by a very knowledgeable server that the rice and beans were not, nor had they ever been , GF. I and my children are not Celiac, and we rarely experience symptoms that manifest themselves obviously and externally, so we didn't know. I will not be returning to this restaurant until the entire staff is properly trained and informed. For a great GF Mexican alternative, we will be at Aldaco's.
Um, there is definitely no gluten free menu, I asked to speak to a manager and don't know who I got - but she told me sour cream wasn't safe. Serious miscommunication here. Maybe some staff is better educated than the ones I talked to? Definitely cross contamination on chips and corn tortillas - she could tell me that. Hoping I don't get sick.
The menu is clearly labeled as far as what has gluten that cannot be removed. Be aware that the corn tortillas are made on the same press as he flour and the chips are fried in a shared fryer. The fajitas with no tortillas were excellent!
I have always relied on this restaurant to accommodate my gluten free/dairy free needs but the last two times I have ordered from their menu and specifically requested no cheese/queso, my food has come with it anyway. The first time the manager was very apologetic and said my re-made meal would be free....it was not. Last night when the same thing happened, I gave up. Will not be eating here again.
