If you have Celiac avoid this location. High probability of cross contamination. They have a GF menu at other Macayo locations but not this one.
My luck. Asked for stacked enchiladas, I got FLOUR TORTILLAS! 3 flour tortillas stacked under sauce, I had no idea until I took the sauce off. I told the waiter this looks like flour tortillas and he was so cocky he replied "no it's corn" without even looking at my plate. 1 hour later I ended up throwing up. I would sue them if I could. It's my life on the line. Look out for the waiter by the name of MITCH, or just stay clear of this restaurant honestly. They have screwed up my orders for years, surprised I'm not dead.
They have made chips in separate oil which was fantastic. The salsas are great. I always get grilled chicken tacos. Their gluten free menu is sufficient if you need your fix! I love the margaritas too. Just let them know you have a "severe gluten allergy" or just say Celiac Disease and see if they know what that is by now, either way inform the staff Bc nobody actually wants us to get sick!
I have eaten here several times and have never gotten sick. I do keep to the same which is the enchilada stack and chips and salsa. When it comes to chips I'm usually stay away because of contamination. But I have never had a problem here. I always tell them about my situation I even get guacamole which is on the gluten-free menu and I'm good.
They didn't have a printed gluten free menus but Eddie came out from the kitchen and went entire the whole menu with me. Explained that they have two different corn tortillas and one has gluten. Knew the ingredients in all the sauces and helped me pick out something I wouldn't have thought I could have. He stayed past his shift to cook it himself and minimize the cross contamination. I was impressed with his knowledge of gluten allergies, celiac, and cross contamination. I now have a much wider selection to eat here and know just how to ask for it to be prepared. I will be back!
My server was not knowledgable at all on gluten free or what was in food. Nor was she knowledgable how things were prepared. She was willing to find out and they did go above and beyond to provide safe chips for me. However, I'm extremely sensitive to MSG as well as gluten and I had a huge reaction after eating here. I did not get glutened but the food was not great. My reactions to MSG are just as terrible in different ways than gluten. So if you are like me please avoid this place.
I went with a very large party and they still have a gluten free menu. I ordered the green Chile pork stew and skipped the tortillas that come on the side. Even though I am very sensitive, I had no reaction. It was $10 for not much food, but it was safe.
They don't have a gluten free menu anymore, and the staff isn't always aware of what a gluten allergy is, but by and large they're friendly and helpful. The food is good, and the prices are affordable - we eat at Macayo's frequently and recommend others do the same if they're looking for a gluten free sit-down restaurant.
Update: they no longer offer a gluten free menu and cannot guarantee protection against cross-contamination. It's unfortunate they've opted to no longer service gluten free customers since they have the best Mexican food in town. (Dec 2013) To start with, you are handed a professional laminated gluten-free menu, not a copy-of-the-month allergen menu that you have to decipher and compare with a regular menu. The chips and salsa are gf, the chips are not contaminated with wheat in processing. There is a decent selection on the menu in each category to choose from. To help avoid accidental mix-ups in the kitchen they do things like "stacked enchiladas" instead of the traditional rolled. Great service at this location too. I've been dining at this location for five years and never once had poor service. Oh, if you like hotter salsa, just ask the server. They have some by request.
Our server seemed to know more about the gluten-free menu than the cook did. Fortunately, our server checked with the manager to confirm ingredients. The gluten-free menu had a decent range of choices. The corn tortilla chips brought to our table when we arrived were gluten-free, but our server warned us that they were cooked in the same fryer as flour-based products. That was disappointing. All in all, it ended up being a great meal, thanks to our knowledgeable server Kate.
We just ate at the Macayo's at 7040 E Broadway and my husband and I are both sick. We eat Mexican food at least once a week and never have a problem, we have been wheat free for about 4 months now and we were excited to try this place out with their GF menu, NEVER AGAIN!
Really good gluten free menu! Seems like you can get jus about anything on a corn tortilla instead of flour. Even the tortilla chips are safe. My only complaint was with an issue with dairy. They brought out a plate with cheese on it, so I reminded them that I could not have dairy. So they brought a plate with no cheese but with sour cream. Again, I sent it back. They then proceeded to bring back the SAME PLATE that they simply scraped the sour cream off of. I informed them that I have a severe allergy and that was not acceptable and asked for a new plate. All said and done it was a delicious and safe meal. I would go back.
