As a Celiac living in the Portland area for the last decade, I would like to show some serious love and appreciation for the existence of this place and proclaim it accurately as one of the best Celiac-safe establishments ever in Portland. This food is gluten-free and drips with flavor that I truly only remember from pre-Celiac days; the arepas are outrageously tasty with the corn tender on the inside side and perfectly grilled on the outside, and meats which are tender and flavorful. The sauces are possibly even more delicious - do yourself a favor and try the Salsa de Suerito if you don't mind a hint of spice. These folks were kind and answered my questions over the phone before initial visit and confirmed that everything that comes in and out of Maiz is gluten free. I am a risk-adverse Celiac and therefore typically look only towards dedicated gluten free kitchens such as this when eating out....I can report all experiences at Maiz have been safe as advertised! Sincere hopes that this spot does as well as it deserves and is a cornerstone of Woodfords Corner for years to come!
