I’ve eaten here a lot since they re-opened and most of my experiences have been good. However, the last two times I ate here I was glutened. I always preface every order with “I have a gluten allergy” and in the past they did an amazing job and I never got sick. I don’t know if it’s a disconnect between the server and the kitchen, or if I just got unlucky, but I will not be eating here again. It makes me so sad because they have so many great gluten free options, but I can’t risk it. Eat here at your own risk.

They say gluten free on the menu but they no longer have gluten free biscuits. They no longer have GF waffles. They do still have a dedicated fryer for chicken and fries.
I was disappointed they still listed these on their menu but can’t pony up to GF. The poor waitress has to deliver the bad news.
Fix your menu.

Waiter was knowledgeable about gluten allergy. The GF toast was horrible and the sausage were basically beef patties. Would recommend other things on the menu. Other than that pretty safe to eat there.

Mama’s was great. Most anything that is fried can be made GF - they have a gf batter! The mushrooms are the exception but if you are there when it’s not too busy they will make them. Be sure to double check when they bring it out - they did try to give us regular mushrooms and gravy but quickly fixed the mistake when I asked. The servers were very knowledgable and double checked with the manager when they weren’t sure. No issues afterward - really enjoyed the gf chicken-fried chicken and gf gravy.

3/2024: Amazing!! The gluten free batter is also dairy free! They were slow enough to make GF fried mushrooms. Then I got the GF chicken fried steak. The GF gravy had dairy in it so I had to skip that but everything had was sooooo good!! We’ll be back!
6/2024: I ordered the chicken fried chicken and mushrooms. The waitress was a little confused because the GF batter usually has dairy in it and the GF frier has trace amounts of dairy. I talked to the manager and they’re able to make the GF batter with only egg, no dairy so the only risk is the cross contamination of dairy in the frier - it’s a dedicated GF frier! Food was delicious and I’m still feeling fine right now.

Very pleased! Server was knowledgeable & happy to guide my non-GF friend & me in our selections!! We both had breakfast I’ll definitely be back!! I promise I haven’t had GF toast that tasted exactly like I remember — I was so happy! NOTE: I couldn’t remember all the GF items they had so I’ll update this after next visit.

The food and service were excellent! We had very tender chicken fried steak, fried shrimp, onion rings and amazing country gravy. We haven’t had fried food like this in so long. It’s a nice treat. We were too full for the cheesecake but will defiantly be back soon to try it.

My celiac daughter and celiac self felt comfortable here and the food (fried chicken, a BLT and fries) was tasty. They make it clear on the menu what is available gluten free but you have to ask what the modifications are. If not for other reviews I wouldn’t have any idea about cross-contamination, the waiter wasn’t really in the know and seemed pretty casual about it. All worked out well.

I read the comments of this place and decided to try it. It did not disappoint. I will definitely be going again. They are knowledgeable and all gf items are clearly marked on the menu. I would say 80% of the menu can be made gf. I can’t wait to go again.

Just tried this place and it did not disappoint. I had their caesar salad, chicken fried chicken and gravy, fries, and mixed vegetables, all modified to be gluten free since I have Celiac. Everything was delicious and well portioned. The staff was friendly and welcoming. As an added bonus our waiter was well versed on gluten intolerance, gluten allergy, and Celiac, I cringe having to say it's an allergy so most restaurants understand. Our waiter explained they have a separate prep area, dedicated fryer, and pan for grilled items. One other thing about this place is that it looks and is kept very clean. Can't wait to try their breakfast next time we are in town.

Their gluten-free pancakes are some of the best I've had. Besides that they don't have many other good options. They have porkchops and stuff, but not many other gluten-free substitutes.

This place is a “must eat” in San Antonio!! I had the best chicken fried steak with mashed potatoes and cream gravy along with fried green tomatoes. Y’all!! I’m southern and normally the best GF versions of these are only available at my own house. 95% of their menu is GF and absolutely delicious. GO!

I ordered a cappuccino, and prefaced the entire meal telling the waiter I had a gluten allergy. I’m celiac but most people understand allergy better.
They brought out the cappuccino and it had a biscotti on the plate. I asked if it was gluten free and the waiter proceeded to say, let me check. He then took it to the bar and then threw it away (the biscotti, not the drink) and brought back the same cup. I said that would most likely make me sick and asked politely if he could have it remade. 20 minutes later, they brought another one out. It was cold and had cookie crumbs on the plate. When I asked for a manager, she proceeded to tell
Me that the cappuccino machine was right next to a lot of cookie crumbs including Oreos and there was not way of preventing that. She said they were definitely not a gluten free kitchen and that the potential for all of their food had a high risk of cross contamination. She was haughty and rude about it without apology.
I was so disappointed after reading all of the great reviews. I had eaten a few bites of my gluten free fried steak and now my stomach is killing me. Definitely saddened by this turn of events. Eat at your own risk.

Awesome GF food! Work nicely with you on all food allergies! Wish they had a gluten-free/dairy free option for dessert! We are regulars there and have suggested that they do a flourless chocolate cake… Hoping they add that and switch up the regular menu a little bit more often!

My husband and I had a wonderful experience here a few weeks ago. I have Celiac and have to be gluten free. Food was absolutely delicious and we couldn't tell it was GF. We had a nice waitress, too. We even called over the manager and expressed our gratitude. I sent my daughter and her boyfriend here last week. She had an entirely different experience. She also has Celiac and expressed to the waitress a few times that the food needed to be gluten free. Someone else brought out the food and she asked again if the food was gluten free, and this new server said the waitress didn't indicate it had to be gluten free. She glared at my daughter when my daughter smiled at her, and didn't apologize for the mistake. My daughter was supposed to get me an order to go, but when she texted me what happened I said never mind. The waitress didn't seem to care or offer reassurances when she told the waitress the reason she wasn't getting food to go. I know some people think this diet is a fad, but for us it's absolutely necessary. It's sad that we have to feel defensive and afraid to eat when the restaurant offers a gluten free menu. So now I'm not sure we feel comfortable going back, which is a shame. It would help if they educated their staff that we're not all fad dieters and marked the GF items with a different plate or a little flag, so we were reassured the food was safe. If we do go back and get stuck with my daughter's waitress, I guess we'll leave rather than risk getting sick.

Goodness! Stay far away from this place. I spoke to the manager and waitress. They were both on board. I was incredibly sick. The fries who were supposedly dedicated gluten free and their salad made me so awfully sick. I have celiac and I am extremely sensitive. Would recommend to stay clear from this place.

Very Celiac-friendly establishment! I'd eaten here before my diagnosis, but it had been years. This time, the waitress assigned to our table was unphased by my GF request (meaning it was normal, and she was trained about cross contamination). Since this was my first visit being GF, I verified by asking: they do have a dedicated fryer and prep area.
I ordered the chicken fried steak with coleslaw, and mashed potatoes with gravy. It was delicious! The menu was clearly marked with items that could _not_ be made GF. I'll never be able to have their fried mushrooms again as they're not GF. :(
Everyone else at my table ordered regular food, and it all came out at the same time. Excellent experience overall!

Tried for the first time last night. The restaurant was busy with a waiting list, but well worth the wait!!! Will definitely be back to try more gluten free greatness!! The majority of menu can be gluten free with the exception of 5-6 menu items marked with a 🌿symbol. Very curious and knowledgeable staff. Visited with a local celiac customer who eats at restaurant 2-3 times a week with no issues.

Mama’s Cafe has been reopened by the original owners, the Lawton family. 3/4 if the menu can be made gluten free, with a little wheat symbol next to any item which cannot be made gluten free. I have had the bean burger and fries ( dedicated fryer) and the chicken fried steak with gluten free cream gravy, which was excellent. I am a very sensitive celiac and had no issues each visit. Service was knowledgeable and enthusiastic in sharing their precautions and the seriousness with which they approach gluten free. Anecdotally, two of the restaurant’s leadership have spouses or family members with celiac. Highly recommend!
