NO GO! GF Avocado Toast was brought to table. Avocados were spoiled. Tried one bite and just sent it back. Talked to Manager. Didn’t get much help. Don’t walk. RUN

They do prepare food in a separate area they say but I started to itch and had a bad stomach ache the next day.. The gluten free bread was terrible.. But the restaurant is great just not as gluten free as it could be

This original little gem, this cave, is where Metro Diner started, now a national chain. If you are from out of town and looking for a Metro cause there’s one around the corner from you, this place has the cozy ambience and elbow-to-elbow seating charm and busy worker cramped kitchen noise you need to fully taste the flavor of Metro. They have a GF menu, GF bread for $1, some outdoor seating with space heaters in the winter, and if you say gluten “allergy”, they have a protocol for cleaning cooking space, changing gloves and toasting bread under a heat lamp instead of in a toaster, etc. Still, obviously, with fried chicken, pancakes, waffles, wheat bread, etc in such a small volume, and no 100% dedicated GF cooking zone, utensils, pots/pans, cross contamination seems possible. Quieter back room with a handful of tables with a little more room. After eating there check out the shops and other interesting features of nearby historic San Marco area bordering the St John’s River.

Metro is a great place, a satisfying staple, for breakfast in general with an open kitchen. Hard to eat here and be unhappy and have been many times. Good or bad it has become a corporate chain recently and the menu was pared back to be simpler (formerly an eclectic giant 4-6 page readers digest sized thing, now a double sided approximately 8.5” x 11” page), losing some awesome items like the corned beef hash — yet still has a nice menu. GF bread for $1. Has a two page GF menu, though cross contamination could obviously be an issue as they have fryers, fried chicken, bread, biscuits, etc flying around in the kitchen, and no dedicated GF cooking space. But our waitress told us if you say gluten “allergy” they have a protocol to change gloves, use a heat lamp instead of a toaster to toast bread, will clean the cook area for you, etc. The ketchup isn’t marked GF. The food here is great, filling, emerges quickly enough and worth a trip. Hash-browns are terrific. Can be 15-30 min table wait at peak times. They don’t take reservations.

The food was good, but I got sick immediately after eating. I specified celiac and asked for the separate preparation but I can tell something was cross contaminated unfortunately. It was not busy when we came.
