Much of gf menu items are cross contaminated in shared oven or grills. I would rather eat at another restaurant that is truly celiac friendly. The staff here was very nice and honest about prep areas.
Just finished lunch at Monica's and it was amazing! Our waitress Samantha was awesome!! Haven't had that kind of food since I found out I was gluten intolerant. Will definitely be back!
Monica's is voted the best Italian restaurant in Iowa City for a reason. Food is absolutely delicious! For those with Celiac Disease, they recommend ordering pasta dishes since it is cooked in its own pot of water. I love the pasta bolognese with red wine sauce. The pizza has a slight risk of cross-contamination so the pasta is the safest. I was also served gluten free bread at no additional charge. Great service and patio for lunch or dinner - I always stop when I’m traveling along I-80.
Tasty gluten free ziti and roll. first pasta I have had since diagnosis. I felt human.
I have had several pasta meals and all have been excellent! The penne pasta with Alfredo sauce was amazing! Gluten free bread is also available for a $1 charge, but well worth it. The gluten free menu is quite extensive.
This is how it is done. Very clear gf menu indicating if things are toasted or grilled on same equipment as gluten. They recommend the pasta (separate water and equipment) for celiacs. I had amazing alfredo and gf roll. I only wish they had more vegetarian gf options.
Monica’s has a gluten free menu and recommends the pasta dishes as being the safest. I ordered the GF Zita and thought I’d died and gone to heaven. (They also brought me a gf baby loaf of bread for dipping in flavored olive oil) It’s a large order of pasta which can easily be split. (I had leftovers) They also had a delicious gf cheesecake which you won’t want to share because it’s so good! Plan on hitting the gym the next day because their food is too good to resist. The wait staff was courteous, friendly & professional.
Most reliable gluten free restaurant in Iowa City. The gluten free bread is dense, but delicious. Their menu explicitly states what is most likely to be contaminated. I stick to the pasta dishes because I'm sensitive to contamination and I haven't had an issue.
I love the variety here you can get delicious pasta or pizza or burgers!
I have eaten here 3 times. first two times I didn't get "celiac sick" and the most recent time I did...not sure what happened there.
Amazing GF pasta! So says my daughter who has celiac. We have eaten there 6 times since this fall when my daughter enrolled at Iowa. All the pasta dishes have been awesome, and she enjoys the GF bread and cinnamon spread too. Only complaint is that they don't have GF grill space so she can't try the burgers that look so good. Wish they could dedicate a grill for GF burgers since we go there so often.
Large GF menu and good food. Entrees for lunch run $15-$23, so a bit on the pricey side, but tasty food. The GF menu has advice to order the pasta to minimize chance of exposure to gluten since other GF foods don't have dedicated preparation areas.
This place was wonderful. We brought our family with three and although it's more of a nice sit down place didn't feel unwelcome with kids at all. They had the largest gluten free menu we have ever seen! My nine year old was giddy with delight! Too bad we live out of town or we'd be here to try it all! My husband does come to Iowa City weekly for work and hopes to support this place every chance he gets. :)
Had a champagne fruit salad here. Was the best salad I have had in my life. Awesome gf rolls. I wasn't sick. Very, very happy with overall experience.
My wife has been dosed here twice. We have two other friends with celiac who have also been dosed at Monica's. Absolutely can't recommend. Plus the food isn't very good anyway.
We love Monica's!! I have celiac so I especially love their GF options!
very celiac friendly. I am also dairy free so the menu options were a bit limited for me. However, the gluten free dinner rolls are to die for! there is an extra charge for them, but absolutely worth it!
Had a large GF menu...dinner rolls, too! Ate here twice while we were in town and didn't have any issues!
Knowledgeable staff pertaining to GF items. Good menu selection
Monica's is very up front about their pasta being most celiac friendly. Their chef came out and talked with us about options, told us about the precautions he would take and walked us through. There are not a lot of strict GF options but they did have a GF roll which was great.
I'm very sensitive and so is my friend and we have always had good luck here. They even have gluten free dinner rolls!
Delicious!!! Great food and great service! We have a new favorite restaurant!
Have a friend who works in the kitchen is not celiac friendly. Beware if you get the hamburger bun it is brushed with the same butter is regular buns and grilled in the same space. This is just one of many examples. Come eat here at your own risk if your celiac also had a chat with the owner who basically said the same thing. They are just trying to cash in on the gluten-free trend they don't care about your health .
my favorite place to eat!
I was very upset following my meal. I have celiac disease and the staff assured me that a pasta dish would be safe. I had a delicious Alfredo dish and I asked afterwords what brand of pasta they used. When they brought it out and showed me, the label said it was produced in a factory containing gluten! NOT CELIAC SAFE.
So glad I called this place very impressed with their gluten free options. Also very impressed with their customer service skills. and let's not forget the dinner rolls with the cinnamon butter was amazing I took some home so good I will be back
The Gluten Free food is excellent here, I have not had a bad one.yet. The GF roll at the beginning of the meal is wonderful. I feel itis well worth the trip!
Monica's has the best GF rolls. They have the largest GF menu I've ever seen, and the food is delicious!
Great food, knowledgable staff, and excellent selection! They have everything from gf appetizers to dessert! I would recommend this place!
I'm really glad they have gluten free
Lots of GF choices and a friendly and helpful staff!
Over the top with perky upbeat wait staff who truly care about people. Why would you go to a chain restaurant when you can have great food and service? Thanks to this app we found Monica's while traveling I80 & needed a break from the rainstorm. Thank you Find Me GF
awesome food and huge menu.
Great gluten free menu, lots of choices.
Monica's has a very wide variety of GF menu items. I had a Caesar salad, dinner roll and the baked ziti with shrimp. The entire restaurant staff from top to bottom seemed very knowledgeable in gluten-free food preparation. The flavor of the food was excellent and the dinner rolls are to die for! I have celiac disease and I had absolutely no problems with the food. After the meal I was stuffed so I ordered the GF cheesecake to go. This was my first visit to Monica's but I will surely be back! I just wish they were in my hometown.
Delicious options and dedicated GF kitchen. Best GF bread I've had. Only restaurant I trust at the moment, dine there weekly, and never have gotten sick from any cross contamination. Same owners as Bob's Your Uncle, but much more upscale menu.
I am so frustrated. I travel for work and can't eat gluten which makes dining out boring. I was excited to find that Monica's posts that they are GF friendly so I ordered dinner to be delivered. I ordered a GF pasta dish and paid for 2 gluten free rolls because I crave dinner rolls and garlic bread. My food just arrived. I never would have though that when I ordered the rolls I would have to specify WITH BUTTER. Apparently you do. I am not happy at all and at this point it doesn't matter what the rest of the meal tastes like because I am thoroughly disappointed. I almost ran after the delivery guy but I'm sure he doesn't carry butter with him :)
Dedicated gluten free menu. Ordered the Pear Walnut salad off the gluten free menu which is supposed to come without the fried brie but they put it on anyway. Waitress was great about taking it back and remaking it. Kitchen staff obviously not trained to understand gluten issues. Would not consider safe for celiac or gluten-intolerance. Still, food was quite good, but be careful.
Excellent! I'm from out of town but my parents live in Iowa City and this has always been a favorite restaurant of ours. My fav is the Black Fettucine with Lobster. Very happy with the GF substitution! Loved the GF roll they offered. Staff really should be trained to a minimum on gluten issues as a courtesy to the customer, but understandable why they aren't. Very impressed with the sizeable GF menu. Thanks! Wish I lived closer!
I've given Monica's a couple tries but will not be going again. Latest attempt was Father's day (family members were trying to appease me with oh they have gluten free). Well I ordered for myself and my daughter. They tout how good they are are being a great place to eat gluten free. Well the waitress was clueless. She brought out my daughter's burger. I asked if it was the gf bun. She said I don't know. Then there was fried cheese on my salad (that I had orderd becasue said waitress didn't assure me that any of the meat option were indeed safe). Anywhoo she took both plates back and returned right away with little "gf" flags stuck in them and my fried cheese remove. Well needless to say I was skeptical but ate my salad anyway cos I was starving. Lesson learned was sick for days :( Will never ever eat there again.
The gluten free foods are pretty good here. The pizza is ok, not great, but their gluten free penne is good. It can be substituted into most pasta dishes. The gluten free rolls are really good, but cost $1 with a meal ($2 by themselves) while non-gf rolls are complimentary. The cinnamon butter is awesome though. The other gf breads are not as good, but still ok. I called once on a Saturday night wanting a gf pizza as a carryout, but they said they weren't doing any carryout orders of any kind that night. I'm sure they were busy, or short-handed, etc. but it's pretty upsetting when you have so few gf options in the area that one of those few places is basically refusing to serve you unless you come in and sit down so that you can tip their waitress.
Decent food, but they make you feel like a second-class citizen when the offer you a roll (for $1) and give your family unlimited plates of bread for free. Not my favorite place. Also, they expect you to know if their ingredients are GF, since they apparently don't. Never gotten sick from here, though.
Very expensive for what you get. Kitchen help do indeed use GF ingredients, but i believe they do not know how to protect your food from their flour-laden environs.
nice clean place. menu was very confusing. gf rolls were good when eaten right away. i got the angel hair (gf) with chicken. It was very greasy, taste was just ok. I'm not sure i'll eat here again.
The best place for gluten free dining in the Iowa City area. Staff is very helpful, the menu has a great selection of delectable food!
GF pasta is great! They are very willing to accommodate many food allergies, even making off-menu items from scratch!
absolute best flute free restraint I have been to. the service is incredible and the food is to for for. I would recommend of to everyone, item free and not :)
Some of the best gluten free food around.
