I was so excited to see an Italian restaurant near the University of Iowa hospital that was gluten free. They have an extensive gluten free menu and cater those with Celiac, gluten intolerate and thosewho are just avoiding.. I had the grilled chicken alfredo and it was delicious! Will definitely be back while we are in Iowa City.

Please let your server know if you have celiac disease, are severely intolerant or Instead just prefer to avoid gluten. Those that just prefer to avoid eating gluten can be confident that these options are all designed and made as gluten-free but those who absolutely have to avoid even very small specks of gluten should consider that our kitchen have separate preparation areas for gluten-free work, (for example, we do not have a gluten-free dedicated fryer, or panint is too small to grills, and some e of the kitchen staff may sometimes have aprons on with a little flour on them) so inadvertent cross-contamination of extremely small amounts is always possible, more so on pizzas, fried items, paninis, etc.

The safest items for those with cellac are the pasta dishes since they're made in their own water and inadvertent airborne cross-contamination is very unlikely. But, as always, you should carefully consider your own individual dietary needs, as we cannot guarantee complete freedom from inadvertent cross-contamination.

5 stars for celiac safety, 2 for taste and quality. I got the gf Alfredo with chicken - the sauce was bland and bitter (even Olive Garden has way better sauce) and the gf penne was mushy, overcooked and falling apart. The grilled chicken was the worst of it all, it tasted rubbery and microwaved. I appreciate the celiac knowledge & safety protocols but wouldn’t return.

This place is fantastic! I felt super safe and taken care of. All of the food we had was good, but the real standout were the gf rolls! They were massive and super light and fluffy! I even bought some rolls to go, they were that good. Definitely worth stopping by.

was a bit disappointed since the other reviews spoke very highly of Monica’s. my dad and I are both celiac and both ordered the bolognese, and it was very ok. gluten free rolls were good, but also not as good as some other i’ve had. could’ve just been what we ordered but we both agreed it wasn’t that great.

I have celiac and live in the Iowa city area. Monica’s is far and away the place I feel most comfortable eating. Why does this place have so many stars? The gluten free food was alright, the buns were great, but the lobster did NOT taste right and the overall establishment was not very clean. The prices are way too high for what they’re serving.

Absolutely AMAZING! The menu is a full page, both sides. They offer everything from sandwiches to pasta to pizzas and even desserts. They even start you off with a GF roll (they do cost $1). The menu states that the pasta is the safest option because it has a designated water station. I had a pizza and didn’t have any problems. I’d come back here just to try all the options they offer. Been a long time since I’ve had so many options!

Great local place that we have relied on for the 10 years we have lived in the area. Large Dedicated GF menu with lots of variety and they always have a little wooden stick in your food when they bring it out so you know it was prepared GF. Menu clearly states if something is made in the same fryer. Owner is well versed in GF needs and him or the servers can all answer any questions you have. Otherwise their salads and pasta dishes are my favorites. They will even just use spinach if lettuce doesn't agree with your stomach like mine. We are dairy free as well so I just ask for the dairy items to not be included. Definitely worth the drive!

Friends… this is a must-go. We’re 98% plant based and occasionally indulge in fish and cheese. We ate the pear and walnut salad, which was divine. We also had the lobster pasta dish with cream based sauce. I could’ve cried the sauce was so delicious!!!

There is a gluten free menu, they brought delicious gluten free bread to the table with garlic infused olive oil and their house butter (cinnamon and brown sugar, I believe.) The folks who work there are so kind and we lucked out and were the only patrons at the time. Truly next level. I felt like I was eating at a restaurant pre gf and a myriad of other sensitivities days. They will take care of your hunger and your spirit. 10/10

Went here on a quick weekend trip to Iowa City. The owner happened to be there and welcomed us. You can tell he takes pride in the service and food. On the menu it includes his cell phone and email to reach out to him.

The gluten free menu has a warning about which meals are made in more shared locations and with recommendations for celiac friendly meals. There wasn’t a picture of the gluten free menu on here so I’ve added one. I should have added a picture of the roll I had. So good. I had baked ziti with penne pasta and it was delicious! And best part it was celiac safe for me!

Definitely my favorite restaurant! They have so many options, probably more than every other restaurant I have been to! The gluten free dishes come out with a marker to let you know they are gluten free! I am pretty sensitive and have never had a reaction. On the menu it states the pasta dishes are the safest because they get their own pot, own water, etc. So that’s usually what I stick to but I have also had a few of the appetizers like their gf rolls, the crab dip, and the bruschetta! The do have a separate gluten free menu so make sure to ask for it!

Fantastic! Gluten free menu had a ton of options and explained all the risks for someone with celiac vs just avoiding gluten. I was super impressed with their accommodations for celiac/gluten free. Given all the great reviews, we weren't as impressed. Granted, I have Celiac and so we dined gluten free, and that may have made the difference. Don't get me wrong - the food was still good, their gluten free offerings and precautions are commendable. It just fell short of our expectations of them having been voted #1 for 5 years running or something. BUT - as I said, it was still good and they accommodated gluten free exceptionally, so I still highly recommend them.

one of the best gluten free menus I've seen. They are not able to control all CC but it sounds like they make an effort to be careful. Also, let your server know you need GF and they will be extra careful of your order and what is brought to the table. I had the main hamburger (no bun) with stir fried veggies. It was all SO GOOD !!! and I didn't have a reaction. Will definitely go back there.

The service was absolutely superb, the waitress was very knowledgeable about being gluten free as well as the preparation the kitchen took. The food was excellent and the gluten free menu was large and informative. It said right on the menu if things were made on shared surfaces and what was safest for someone with celiac disease. The food was all very good. Highly recommend the dinner rolls, they are the best I’ve ever tried.

Nice GF menu with a variety of choices. GF roll is always delicious. Pasta dishes are sometimes undercooked but overall a good meal for the price. Pasta dishes are safest as there is the lowest risk of cross-contamination as stated on their menu but I've never had an issue with their pizza either.

Just finished lunch at Monica's and it was amazing!Our waitress Samantha was awesome!! Haven't had that kind of food since I found out I was gluten intolerant. Will definitely be back!
