New Seasons has more gluten free foods than any other grocery store I’ve been to in Seattle. They have amazing bread from New Cascadia Traditional GF bakery delivered (separate from the regular bread section). I’m continually surprised by the GF items I find there - graham crackers, matzah, vegetarian breakfast sausage, refrigerated stuffed tortellini they prepared, etc. Many of their price labels will note GF, so helpful!
Great packaged food options but I ate some quinoa salad and mashed cauliflower/parsnips from the hot food bar and didn't feel great afterwards (I'm Celiac). Can't say for sure it was contaminated but I stuck to the raw salad bar after that.
I have been hoping for a while that New Seasons would cross the river. They finally did! This one, as others have noted, is not as cozy as the Portland ones. I would like to see a larger produce area. I pick and chose what produce to purchase here to supplement my organic produce from FM. The hot food bar is great except for the fact that most of it is not appropriate for gluten intolerant people or celiacs. They don't even have gluten free buns behind the bar and they sell them in the store. I don't understand the logic of that. On the other hand, they have a great bulk section and a broader variety of gluten free flours and baking supplies than anywhere else. They are lacking in nutritional department in cheer more than anything. It is on the small side. I can cope with that. A smile would go a long way to help balance that though. Every other employee in the store is smiling and helpful. They seem happy to be there. I have been to NS regularly since they arrived and have yet to meet one person working the nutritional section who isn't sullen. They have an extensive cheese selection and great uncured salami and meats. Their house made ground sausage is delicious and reasonably priced. It may be spendy, but I have to fess up that of all the ground beef I have tried (FM, WF, Chucks, Top Choice Meat Market, etc.) only one compares to the meat they carry and despite Costco carrying it, the cost is higher than NS because it's labeled organic. This is the one place in town where you can get organic fried chicken. The only down side is it's cooked and then boxed and shelved with deli pizza and other deli items in the refrigerated section. Despite that, both it and the bbq'd chicken are good. The fried chicken is not gluten free. They carry Cascade Bakery gluten free cupcakes and goodies, GEM cookies, brownies and the best cheesecake ever, Pamela cupcakes and a whole slew of other gluten free junk food for those of us who thought we would have to give up our empty calories. My personal favorites are the Cascade Bakery cupcakes ($3 apiece) with their light, fluffy cake and light, not-to-sweet frosting and the GEM raspberry cheesecake is coma worthy. They also make a rocky road one that I'm sure is great, but I've never been a big fan of marshmallows unless they are blackened over a grill. If all of this is not enough for you, they carry WOW bakery cookies and they do mean WOW!. They make lemon burst, peanut butter, chocolate chip and more. My favorite is the peanut butter...better than the original if you ask me. There are larger individual cookies on top of the desert case and bags of small ones in the cookie isle. One aspect of this store that I love and am a bit befuddled by is the outdoor bbq on Sunday and I believe Saturday also until three in the afternoon. I love that it is their ground beef for burgers and delicious 1/3lb all beef hot dogs if you'd rather. They include coleslaw, potato salad, or macaroni salad (you choose one) and desert for $6. The best part is they have gluten free buns! This is where I'm confused. They simply walk back to their own freezer to pull out buns for this bbq, yet they don't provide them for the hot food inside? Back to the bbq: the meat is all good. You can't go wrong regardless of if you go for the hot dog or the burger. They do cook it to order so expect a five to ten minute wait. They ask what condiments you would like (lettuce, pickle, relish, tomato, mayo, mustard, dijon mustard and ketchup). The macaroni salad is not gluten free. The other two are. I had the potato salad and my spouse had the macaroni salad. I believe they use the same dressing for both as they both have a creamy white consistancy dotted with slivers of carrots and diced celery. The potato salad did have some diced egg also. However it wasn't enough to taste it. THe carrots threw me, but they really did add a nice element of sweetness. Water is available just inside for free with your meal. On a side note, you pay for the bbq inside.
Amazing grocery store that carries GF/ vegan options and the people are so friendly and helpful.
