Had breakfast here the other day. They have a separate waffle iron and toaster for gluten free - had eggs, bacon and a waffle. Was delicious! The server seemed knowledgeable about gluten free food preparation and asked lots of questions about cross contamination and may contain…
The waffle was delicious and from my understanding, only gluten-free batter is used in this particular waffle maker. The servers didn’t always strike me as fully understanding of gluten free for celiacs specifically, but with that said, I felt safe enough and I don’t think I got glutened?
So take what you will from this review, but I ate the same meal again at another OEB location and was fine… do ask questions tho!
The waitress explained that the meats like bacon and chicken sausage would be fried on the same grill as pancakes, so they weren’t safe to order. She asked the kitchen if the pork in the breakfast tacos would be safe, and it was! The breakfast tacos were quite good but not amazing. Still it was a nice place to eat with knowledge staff.
Lots to choose from on the menu and it’s clearly marked with modifications which makes ordering easy. It is on the more expensive end for brunch. We used the yelp waitlist which was a good move as it was very busy.
I ordered the threesome. After initially saying ‘no problem’ to being coeliac, the waitress followed up asking if I was ok with cross contamination to which I responded no. She then explained that essentially there will be CC but the staff will be careful. Overall, I do appreciate their caution and I did feel comfortable eating there, particularly with all the positive reviews, however don’t love that continuing with my order equated to tolerating CC.
Despite that, the food was good, portions generous and I would eat there again.
We heard this place gets super crowded on the weekend so we visited at 7:30am on a Monday — no waiting! :) The waitress recommended the ‘Threesome’ - GF Belgian waffle, breakfast meat of choice & eggs. The waffle was indeed delicious. The fruit & whipped cream topping were extra $. I also enjoyed the chicken blueberry sausage. The eggs were unfortunately inedible, undercooked and slimy, so I would not order eggs again, but I would go back to this restaurant.
Finally, a burrito tortilla that I didn’t have to give up for a bowl!! I enjoyed the breakfast burrito. They serve the fingering potatoes marinated in pesto. Seriously so good, I couldn’t contain my excitement.
Very kind staff! Definitely recommend, a busy shop because of the wonderful food.
The reviews made us try this place and we were very impressed! Knowledgeable staff and dedicated cook area, toaster, and waffle maker. Excellent food!
I’m 2 for 2 now at OEB — positive experiences at their North shore and now the Yaletown location. Servers seemed very GF aware, there were lots of good options and I had my first waffle in about 5 years from their dedicated GF waffle maker. I don’t normally look for GF beer at a brunch place, and you wouldn’t find it here anyway. But plenty of good options all around.
I’ve eaten here many times, perhaps 10 times and they always list my order as celiac. One time they brought me the fried fries by accident (as opposed to the roasted potatoes) but realized their mistake right away before I had eaten it. I will continue to eat here and feel very safe!
Update: just ate here yesterday with one of my celiac friends and she ordered one of the sandwiches, and they brought her a gluten bun, despite saying multiple times that she’s celiac…which she didn’t notice until she had eaten 1/2! So unfortunate, because I really trusted this place!
It’s also a good reminder that even if a
Place is very trusted and does gluten free, there is always a risk!
A bit disappointed with the food option, there’s only 3 GF options to choose from . Food was good but not worth the wait to get a table for only 3 breakfast options .
Love OEB! I only eat the Benny’s which are so good. The poached eggs can be a bit runny/undercooked so if you are picky just ask for it to be cooked longer. They have a waitlist on Yelp which you will need on the weekend unless you plan to be there before 9am. They offer a gluten free potato option since the duck fat potatoes have gluten in the seasoning and cross contamination risk.
They were able to accommodate my celiac disease by modifying their menu by small amounts (frying the potatoes in canola oil instead of duck fat). They were called in advance to be made aware of my dietary restrictions and the staff were well aware of what could and could not be had or accommodated. I would suggest calling in advance (and speaking to Darren if possible) to let them know and ask any questions because their website doesn't give a lot of information on their gluten free options even though they're well accessible.
Staff seemed very knowledgeable about celiac needs. Server stated “cross-contamination is not ok” and looked for confirmation. Different server who brought the food confirmed it was GF without us asking. Really appreciated all of this.
I appreciate the options they have even though they are limited, and it’s fun that they have a GF waffle that is the only thing they cook on that iron so I feel comfortable eating it. I’ve been probably 15 times and haven’t gotten sick, but I only ever order the waffle, the chia seed pudding, or the huevos in a burrito but with no tortillas. (Pretty sure they are corn tortillas but I hate those just as an aside). I clarify I have an allergy / celiac every single time. Do I feel super confident in their protocols? Maybe not, but enough I do return.
As soon as I mentioned that I was celiac, our server explained that she was gluten intolerant and that everything would be prepared safely. When my order was delivered, she confirmed that it was all GF.
There are a number of GF items marked on the menu but if you speak with the server many more items can be made GF.
I had a (huge) delicious omelette which came with gf toast.
Recommended.
