This place used to be 100% gluten free. I LOVED coming here, it was amazing and I still think about it. Now it’s a ghost kitchen with many gluten items and is no longer dedicated. I don’t feel safe eating here anymore at all and won’t go. Such a disappointment.
No longer dedicated gluten free. Couldn’t answer questions about cross contamination. Did not eat here
This place is no longer dedicated GF. It’s now run by Hungry House and I’m not sure of the exact set up but it seems like Hungry House offers some Pure Grit options as well as other restaurants’ menus. Because of this, the menu is different and has several obviously gluten-filled items on it like bread, couscous, and lumpia (Filipino spring rolls made with wonton wrappers). I asked the person working the front about if/how they were able to accommodate GF needs and did not feel comfortable at all with her answers. She told me the only gluten item was bread and that it’s kept separately. When I pointed out that there were other gluten-containing ingredients on the menu, specifically I asked about the couscous, she paused and just said “well we don’t have that right now”. I then tried to ask a couple more questions to gauge their safety (like if they would change gloves when preparing a GF meal and pull from fresh bins to avoid cross contact) and she was really dismissive and just kept telling me that the only gluten item was bread - which isn’t true! I unfortunately didn’t feel safe eating here and unfortunately left without ordering. It’s too bad bc Pure Grit was SO GOOD!
I live in an area with good vegan food and maybe my expectations were too high based on the other rave reviews, but I was pretty disappointed by the meal I had here. I got the pulled jackfruit plate, and the jackfruit had a smoky flavor but was otherwise pretty bland. Decent sized portion though, and the baked beans were great. I appreciate the safety, but wouldn’t visit again, especially given the prices are on the expensive side.
Absolutely must-go if you are visiting NYC. The food is incredible and the BBQ sauce is killer. We came back multiple times because everything was just so pleasant and most importantly, safe. Yes it's expensive, but that's everything in Manhattan. All things considered, it's not that bad.
This place gets a very strong recommendation from me. Incredibly nice people, and the food is excellent. I really didn’t think I was ever going to get to eat vegan barbecue again after I got celiac. I had the barbecue plate with the impossible cut, baked beans, and potato salad. Everything was delicious. I can’t wait to come back and try more things.
