Great gluten free menu and the staff is knowledgeable. I did not get sick. But the food was mediocre and it was expensive for the quality

Great, great food. We enjoyed the seafood chowder, and baked stuffed shrimp. The kids menu goes up to age 16- and comes in an adorable boat. Particularly fun for gf kids who often don’t stuff like that. Chicken nuggets were really flavorful.

Separate GF menu. The stuffed shrimp was to die for! I couldn’t believe all of it was gluten free. Staff was very knowledgeable and asked me if it was an allergy so they could alert the chef. We stopped by here two different times while in Portsmouth.

We ate dinner here twice in two days based on reviews in this app. I’m celiac and usually find cross-contamination is my worst enemy at restaurants. I had the seafood chowder as an appetizer on both days (because it was so good the first time), and the broiled haddock on day 1 and fried shrimp and haddock on day 2. I should mention I’ve also been dx’d with SIBO (small intestine bacterial overgrowth) and seem to react to onion and garlic. I had no adverse issues on either diagnoses on either day, but did feel a bit bloated after the fried dinner for a couple hours, and bathroom results later and the next day were somewhat affected. Not sure exactly why, since there are many possibilities, but I don’t think it was a gluten problem. I usually eat plainly and these foods were quite rich. I also had a GF brownie dessert on day 1 that I never have. And who doesn’t cook without onion or garlic? So each of those possible reasons plus the fact that I never eat more than one meal out in a row anymore, it’s possible that just one meal wouldn’t have produced the same results. I’d have no problem eating here again. Just let them know you’re celiac before ordering. GF menu is extensive, but they say they can make nearly everything GF. All fried foods whether ordered off the GF or regular menu are made with GF breading, so no cross-contamination from the fryer at all. As near as I can tell, this is Portsmouth’s most reliable GF restaurant for lunch and dinner for celiac folks.

I ate here for lunch today and was very pleased! They have a large gluten free menu with many choices. I ordered the haddock sandwich, which was served on a delicious gluten free roll. The fish was cooked perfectly and was also very good. The restaurant also had a very nice harbor side view. The staff members were very friendly as well. I would definitely recommend River House for gluten free seafood dishes, as well as other GF dishes!

Went a week and a half ago. Lots of GF options and knowledgeable waitress and manager. However, there was a miscommunication between the waitress, kitchen, and food runner, and I was served a lobster roll on a regular bun. I double checked after receiving it because the bun was suspicious but was reassured that it was allergy friendly. I stupidly took it at face value, took a huge bite, and was immediately stopped by the food runner telling me that it was in fact a regular bun I had been served. Everyone was incredibly accommodating after, and the manager comped my meal, but all in all it really sucked and I ended up getting sick the next day (still feeling ill now, a week plus later). It’s cool that the fryer is dedicated though!

Very nice and very large GF menu. The lobster roll came on a very good GF roll. It was really great to be able to get GF fried clams, and they were fantastic! Wonderful that chowder here is GF also!

All flour coating is GF (chickpea/rice) so no issues with cross contamination in the fryer. We had fried calamari, fried haddock & shrimp, French fries, and a lobster roll...all GF! The roll that the lobster came on was not dry and crumbly. Waitress was really nice and great atmosphere. Great, safe place!

Got to have fish and chips for the first time in years! They have a dedicated fryer and use a blended Chickpea and Rice flour for breading. The GF menu was extensive so you’ll have many options here ! When I’m back in the area, I’ll definitely be back!

They have a separate gluten free menu which led us to come here. The seafood chowder is absolutely delicious and so was the brownie sundae. The quinoa salad with grilled salmon is also good. All gluten free! Staff is knowledgeable and conscientious.

Went on a Sunday during brunch, so the whole menu wasn’t available. The fish and chips were so good...lightly coated and crispy. The lobster roll on the gluten free bun was not so awesome. The gf bun is $2 extra, served cold and tasted like styrofoam...didn’t end up eating it. If I went again, I’d skip the bun and opt for lettuce. The seafood chowder was good. Pretty good options. I’d definitely go back when wanting fried seafood.

I was concerned because they don’t have their full GF menu for brunch but they ended up having great options! Absolutely loved it, we will definitely be back to try it for dinner!

One of the few places I can eat and share food with the entire table. Almost the entire menu is gluten free. The staff is extremely knowledgeable and even though things aren't labeled on the menu, every question I had was answered immediately. The chicken tenders and fried clams are amazing

I have been here twice and both times it was fabulous. The gluten free menu is extensive and Dedicated fryers make fried seafood an option. I had fried haddock tonight and it was the best I ever had, even before I was a Celiac. Service was great from our server, Moriah as well as the rest of the staff. Highly recommend this place!!!!

I was assured the kitchen was knowledgeable about cross contamination and food safety for celiac disease. Ordered a noodle dish that was labeled GF but had soy sauce listed as an ingredient. Maybe I shouldn’t have just assumed that it was GF soy sauce, but either way, within 15 minutes of finishing the meal I was extremely sick.

Very good lunch-servers knowledgeable. They had dedicated fryers, so I was able to get fried seafood and French fries. The chowder was also gluten free and excellent!

Full gluten free menu, I ordered fried seafood and it was great at the time. I woke up in the early morning vomiting. Not sure if I ingested a large amount of gluten (even though I ordered form the GF menu) or if something I ate was bad. Either way, I won’t be going back unfortunately.

This is yet another restaurant that “gets it” when it comes to allergies. We felt so comfortable here and our kids (both celiacs) loved it and had no reactions.

I’ve always loved the River House, been going here for years and never had a problem, but this past weekend I definitely got sick. Not sure by what. It was very busy I’m hoping it was just a fluke!

Amazing!!! They carry Deep Edys Vodka which is a GF flavored liquor and make basically everything gluten free! I got the fried shrimp & haddock basket - definitely the freshest tasting fish and chips I’ve ever had! Definitely will be back soon to try more of the menu 🙌🏻💖

Staff was extremely knowledge & so happy to see us happy! Gf beers, cider, rolls for sandwiches & burgers (lobster roll!!), and best yet - ALL fried seafood is GF - they don’t use any gluten in their batters! So no cross- contamination on ANY fried items! They use a chick pea & rice flour batter that is light & crispy, amazing!! Oh and their chowder - also Gf & chock full of seafood, yum.

Gluten free and dairy free curry mussels and lobster roll! Need I say more? We also lucked out with the weather and got a table outside on the deck overlooking the water on a gorgeous day. Best part...my celiac daughter didn't get sick! We'll be back.

Absolutely phenomenal restaurant. The overall vibe is great, and the menu is extensive for both GF and non GF options. Came here with family and there was no issue with everyone finding something to eat. The chowder was amazing- so rare to find it GF! We'll be back for sure.

This place is amazing, from the gluten-free chowder to the onion rings. A full gluten-free menu, dedicated fryers with chickpea flour, and there are even dessert and alcoholic drink options. Everything was delicious and the staff were super nice. Plus a view of the water. Feels like an oasis in a world where lots of restaurants still don't understand how sick gluten makes a lot of us. Go there, you won't be disappointed.

Great restaurant with a great GF menu. Went based on the reviews from this app and it didn't disappoint. I got the Rooster sand which, which is a fried chicken sandwich- something I haven't had in a loooong time! It was delicious! All of their fried food is battered GF. Will def be back!

The food is AMAZING. So nice being able to have fried food as a celiac! The reason for the 4 stars is when I went in there a few weeks ago they gave me a regular bun instead of a GF one. Luckily the waitress noticed it wasn't right when she was about to put it down on the table.

Absolutely excellent. As a person with Celiac I am used to not having many dining options. We drove 2 1/2 hours from Cape Cod Ma. just to have the fried clams and and seafood chowder. Both were excellent. I think we will go back for dinner. Staff was very knowledgeable, being able to answer a question as to the thickening agent used for the chowder. I would highly recommend this restaurant.

You can get almost everything gluten free. They only use gluten free batter, so the risk of cross contamination is super low. Super good French fries and sea food/sandwiches. I love it here.

Great choice for celiacs. Everything fried is GF, really!! They only have one fryer and everything that goes in is safe. My husband loved his fried fish more than any non GF meals he's had.
